Sometimes Uber talented and accomplished people need a kick in the ass, especially if they have previously made it to the pinnacle. I'm thinking the KC series may have been that kick in the ass and we see great Astros baseball for as long into October (and November?) as they can manage. I'm thinking Brantley starts today which puts Chas in CF. Unfortunately that leaves Diaz on the bench as I don't see Dusty starting him at catcher or 1B w/ Javier on the mound, especially after his last start and the game Maldy had yesterday and thecway Abreu is playing (hitting and defense) Altuve Bregman Yordan Tucker Abreu Chas Brantley Pena Maldy Out on a limb prediction - Alex is the hero today.
I hope the entire Astros team watches this over and over. This is the kind of thing that fires this team up!
Apparently I'm missing something. I still see 5. Astros 86-71 Mariners 84-72. If Astros win next 2 ( 4 toward magic#) Astros 88-71 Mariners 84-74 If Mariners then sweep Rangers and Astros get swept by D'Backs then tie goes to Mariners. Astros will still need to win 1 of 3 vs Arizona or Mariners lose 1 vs Tex.
In a complicated situation against multiple opponents (i.e., overall magic number) in which no one opponent's loss matters, the overall magic number is the minimum number of games a team needs to win to guarantee a postseason birth. If the Astros win 4, they are in. There is nothing another team can do to stop the Astros. Edit: I follow the definition of a magic number is the number of games a team must win to guarantee winning a given playoff spot. They can back in with any combination that totals 5 for Astros wins and Mariners losses, but since 4 wins is lower, 4 is the magic number in my book.
Sweep the Mariners and Dbacks -- with tonight and yesterday being JV and Javier's last regular season pitches. Rangers choke. Astros win the West.
If the Astros win 4, that means one of the wins would have to be against Seattle. That means Seattle can only finish 5-1 at best for the rest of the season. Assuming they split the last two games of the series and both teams win out (meaning Houston wins four overall), their records would be: - Houston: 90-72 - Seattle: 89-73
Really? This just clicked. If they win 4 then at least 1 of them would need to be against Seattle and therefore the Mariners would be guaranteed a worse record. Thanks.
