This is the main gripe for me. At least try it and develop a palette. My coworker is a picky eater. He only eats chick-fil-a. calls it the lord's chicken. we did get him to order some crab fried rice at a thai restaurant and that place had pineapples in it...he liked it. but now the issue is he won't eat crab fried rice without pineapple. my dad has a psychological issue with cheese. so if he knows cheese was used to make something, he won't eat it.
My oldest kid is a picky eater and it hurts my soul. His friends are worse however. My kid won’t eat meat or foods that resemble the actual vegetable. But his friends won’t even eat breads or cheeses. I feel like a failure trying to coax him into trying new foods, especially since I like eating food from all across the globe.
Did he eat diff foods growing up? I am wondering how much of it is genetic vs. nurture. I also wonder if there's a correlation to open mindedness to other things in life. ideas...arguments...dealing with people..
100% genetic. He has an anxious and sensitive affect. I was convinced he was autistic but he is smart and generally sociable. Just a weirdo, like his dad. But I am not a picky eater at all. His mom was and is a picky eater.
Ah, so it came from someone. I cannot be with someone who is a picky eater. It makes every part of my life difficult. I travel a lot and I don't want the stress of finding specific foods for people in other countries.
I was pretty picky as a kid (burgers/tacos were meat/cheese only for example). I grew out of it, as most normal people do. I had a housemate about 20 years ago who was kinda picky, and he just didn't give a crap about what he ate. It frustrated the hell out of me, he'd go through a rotation of: Taco Cabana fajita nachos JCI chili-cheese dogs and fries Jersey Mike's original sub Chipotle burrito Whataburger basic burger Domino's pepperoni Chinese takeout (can't remember what it was but he ordered the same thing every time) The 2 things he cooked at home were spaghetti (boil noodles, nuke the jar of sauce, mix together) and Velveeta shells and cheese. I wouldn't even bother cooking extra for him, unless there were other people around I was feeding.
No ground beef (hates the texture). No pork (not sure if this is her Jewish background or something else because I'm Jewish, too and I love pork). Steak but it has to be medium well or worse. Also has to be very lean...no fat (which drives me nuts because fat is flavor). No seafood except tuna (which is fine because I don't eat any seafood). Only veggies will be an occasional salad...but even that's just basically lettuce and croutons. For me, I am still picky but I've progressively gotten better as I've gotten older. I do not eat seafood or any beans. Otherwise, I'm willing to try most things. It's just that I don't like many things...like Indian food. I've tried it twice at nice places and I just can't stand it. I was so bad that I didn't even have cheese on my burgers for the first time until I was in my 20's. Just meat, bun, and ketchup.
Two things: My son was a vegetarian for his senior year in highschool. Was trying to impress a girl I guess. But as a vegetarian he only ate cheese pizzas, rice and general Tso's vegetarian chicken. I thought that Ludacris. 2nd, as a chef in my younger days we loathed vegetarians during a wedding for 300. someone would always have to jump off expediting to make a vegetarians plate. I am now a GM of Campus Dining Services for a college in upstate NY. Sadly my 2nd most popular station is called "Rustic Roots". Locally sourced vegan and vegetarian options. I can tell you when I address the student board monthly, they have the most demands and have the largest voice in the room.
This is what I hate. I hate people that expect to get "catered" to. A group of 10 of us were hanging out at my place, drinking and watching football. I got 5 pizzas delivered and one of my buddy's girl got all sobby, so I asked whats wrong? She replied, "You didnt order anything without meat?" in a really snarky-pouty way like I was supposed to know she was a ****ing vegetarian. Who the **** orders pizza without meat? So I told her this pizza only had onions in it. What she didnt know was that there was bacon all up in it, they were just small pieces and under the cheese. I felt bad for a little, but said **** it, she deserved it with her attitude and expectations of a stranger thats hosting without any prior knowledge. I smiled every time she took a bite.
I was very picky as a kid. Basically hamburgers with ketchup ONLY, french fries, pb and j, pizza, which was really a waste because my mom was a great and adventurous cook for the time. I can remember clearly as a teenager the two things that really started to expand my palate- the first time I had sweet and sour pork at a chinese restaurant and the night I came home stoned and was going through the refrigerator. Suddenly, my mom's leftover curry looked really good and eating it was a revelation. Now, I do almost all of the cooking for my family and make a wide variety of dishes. The major conflict we have is around spice, as I'm often pushing the heat tolerance of my wife and daughter.
I'm a picky eater. I'm also a super smeller and I think that is the primary reason. Smell and taste are different senses but intertwined. My daughter is also a super smeller and a picky eater. My son is not either and they were both exposed to all types of foods by my wife and me while growing up. I knew my daughter was a SS when she was young and would start gagging when she was going #2 while potty training. My son on the other hand would melt the paint off the walls and think the worse it smelled the funnier it was. I've gotten better as I've gotten older and will try things again and again to see if things have changed but there are still a long list of things I don't eat. I don't eat: eggs (just the smell will run me out of the house) cheese (I'll occasionally eat a pizza but its not my favorite). curry Fish that is too fishy, I prefer a mild fish cabbage Most condiments ie mustand, mayo, ketchup just to name a few.
Its funny you mentioned stoner meals. My two favorite places to eat after some good smoke time were, Jack in the crack tacos. If I had some extra loot my buddies and I would go to Pancho's at Alameda mall and work that place over.
I think my definition of "picky" is a lot different from others. IMO if you have a very narrow selection of food you like, you're not picky, you just have a preference. Preferences are fine. I can anticipate and work around preferences. For example, a kid who will eat anything that resembles a chicken nugget without complaint is not picky. I consider someone "picky" if they change their preferences on a whim, have "moods" about food, or have such feelings about certain kinds of a type of food ('that's not the brand of vanilla ice cream I like!'... when you know damn well they wouldn't have even noticed if they had never seen the packaging). This person is a nightmare to provide for.
Lol, last I heard. He was one of those people with a ridiculous metabolism in their 20's-30's...I'd be scared to look at his bloodwork and waistline now unless he's changed some things.
