It does correlate. The whole idea of this rebuild was to spend that cap space either this offseason or next and become an over the cap team before those extensions hit the books - they chose to do that this season with Brooks & FVV. Now they drop back below the cap by ~$6m but lose the $9m they were above with no avenue to directly replace it on future years should they simply cut the player and eat the contract as dead money now. It's simply about cap math and nothing more. Do you want $9m of cap flexibility above the cap or not? KPJ is dead to us and the league - it won't matter which franchise cuts him.
“The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” “The Rockets can waive Porter…” Feigen: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/te...ckets-kevin-porter-jr-future-nba-18367333.php The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement with the National Basketball Players Association makes it clear the team cannot suspend Porter. Section 16 under player conduct in the CBA states: “A Team shall not impose discipline on a player solely on the basis of the fact that the player has been arrested.” The exception to that would be if the team learned of potential illegal actions independent of the arrest, which would not apply to Porter’s case. The CBA does permit the Rockets to bar Porter from media day Oct. 2, training camp to follow in Lake Charles, La., and any other team functions, albeit “without a loss of pay.” Silver can place Porter on administrative leave at any time, but he emphasized Wednesday that there is no urgency to take that step because in mid-September there are no team activities. “When we’re not in season, there is a little bit more opportunity to absorb what’s happened before we react,” Silver said. The Rockets can waive Porter and pay him the $15.8 million guaranteed on his contract for the 2023-24 season and the $1 million guaranteed next season in the extension that included relatively few guarantees because of Porter’s history of volatile incidents. Houston can allow the process to play out, assuming there will be a suspension during which he would not be paid, and then cut him, saving millions. A 30-game suspension, for example, would cost Porter and save the Rockets roughly $4.3 million. The Rockets could try to nullify Porter’s deal by citing the morals clause in uniform player contracts, but without a court verdict, that could be challenged. A spokesperson with the players association did not return messages Thursday. … While the Rockets must wait for the league to act to discipline Porter, they can seek to trade him. The Athletic reported Wednesday that they have begun working to find a deal. But any team willing to acquire Porter’s contract would make the deal for the assets that would come with him, rather than to play Porter. Porter’s contract, worth nearly $16 million this season, would be used to make salaries work in a trade. With the Rockets over the salary cap, they would seek to add a player, with another team adding a draft pick, another Rockets player or both. A team could get off a longer large contract by acquiring Porter’s non-guaranteed seasons and releasing him. Such a deal, however, is unlikely, given trades involving contracts of that size are rare during the months between summer dealmaking and the start of the season. It would be more difficult given Porter’s situation. Keeping Porter’s contract on the books while he is on administrative leave could allow time to put together a deal when larger trades are more common. But if Porter is on the Rockets’ roster at the start of the season, his guarantee for next season increases from $1 million to $3 million. However the Rockets jettison Porter, they are limited in what they are permitted to do and left to consider only the most unwanted of options.
And again it doesn’t matter. Especially when kpj was non guaranteed for next year. He doesn’t stop anything this year either. FA is over. There’s scrubs praying for jobs and 2 years from now for extensions that kick in for green/sengun assuming they earned it that it has no impact on whatsoever All you’re actually complaining about is tilman paying dead money. In which case who cares
The overall sentiment has swung from *Cut him now to * Maybe we should try trade his ass and get something small in return for a bigger trade tomorrow.......
Well, for the very least, we will have a resolution prior to the start of the season. At least the embarrassment will not go past that although the stench will remain.
Good read. I agree with this... I've had the hunch that Rafael Stone is out here making desperate moves this offseason because he knows if the team underperforms this year he may be out of a job. Why The Houston Rockets Shouldn't Add More Players https://www.si.com/nba/draft/newsfeed/why-the-rockets-shouldnt-add-more-players
Not sure why you mentioned me given that I was talking about Brooks' cap figure 2 years down the road and not this year. And even funnier the person I responded to also stated that he didn't care how much Brooks made this year but rather feared his long contract was worrying in a few years. If you are going to call someone out at least get the facts straight
Did not know Fan Nation was part of Sports Illustrated...... Stone is not a good substractor, that is why he is going to deal with a bigger mess in the future.
Thanks for explaining a bit more. I still have a very negative view of how they are handling this by showing they are more concerned with the money than the principles. I also am highly skeptical that there are players/contracts out there that are worth our while that we can get under these conditions (headache of absorbing KPJ who might not be able to be waived for weeks) for “only” a couple 2nd round picks. Lastly - said this before and it’s unrelated to the trade but I find it hard to believe the Rockets didn’t know about some of the other incidents that got out from yesterday. …. On the trade though we just have no idea what the deal will end up being to see if Stone really did make the rockets better or if it’s likely he’ll make them better next summer… but I’m skeptical and believe the org has squandered an opportunity to show some some of principles and moral courage.
We are also victims of circumstance....that we have no triple threats.....or players who have multiple strengths. That way we over-compensate with players with only 2 strengths and piling on those playersv with similar traits. Real glue guys are lacking. Great shooters are lacking again after Ego. Rim protectors are lacking. Someone who can shoot, score, rebound and pass - Last one was Kevin Porter.
the sister is right, he really did try to kill her strangulation is basically a go-to move for serial killers strangled her so hard he fractured one of her cervical vertebra
Better is a vague word because I think he still missed out on a Wemby type of talent. I think Green is more of an athletic and 3 pt shooting Booker type.....but you do not have the Super star and it is really hard to trade for a super star in this era. Without one you are bound to pile on talents to resemble one later but without guarantee. It is all connected. Before people say Wemby is no guarantee either, he is at least going to be a Super star off the court, merchandise .....like Yao Ming was not absolute superstar but he was treated like a rock star/Influencer.
We would have kpj on the team for $16m. The team might actually be better off without having him at all. 16 million well spent. It is not an extreme waste just to cut him off and pay his money.
I wonder what the past two days have been like for KPJ since bailing out I thought nobody could drop the bag harder than Antonio Brown but KPJ just took the crown
