First, KPJ's salary for this year dwarfs his prior career earnings and would go towards his legal defense, which I do not want. Second, you're assuming there will be a civil suit at all and that it will take all of his earnings, which hasn't happened in any domestic violence incident involving an athlete that I've seen. If you can find an example let me know. The Rockets and the NBA will likely face a challenge from the NBAPA in trying to void KPJ's contract, it's the latter's responsibility as a union to do so. There is going to be a legal process to this. Making preemptive "We're going to cut him loose either way" statements can only be used against them. Their legal teams will probably review any statements to the public on the matter going forward. It's amazing that you want the Rockets to do this empty feel good PR gesture immediately, while at the same time being willing to pay KPJ $16M. You haven't thought this through and are working on emotion rather than brains.

Looks like she is in an abuse cycle, even in her state. Yeah, unfortunately another cowardice, unfortunately if true. I guess intimate partners are close.
So everyone in the Rockets knew his nature but either pretended to not see, actively covered it up, and/or believe they're somehow psychologist who can dramatically change people's behaviors. Really no matter how you spin this, it's a bad look for the Rockets organization and certainly Stone if he was front and center in the KPJ enablement.

The state's case gets toasted if she doesn't cooperate.....that is how it works....and that is how a lot of things go - they reach a settlement but the only way she can get a $$$ settlement is if he is still being paid. They didn't deny the fractured vertebra, only that she didn't give consent for the release of her medical records. Also, people in abusive relationships can have a strong emotional attachment to their abusers, which is why they sometimes overlook or cover up the abuse.
She still loves him (DV is complicated) and probably realizes that her multi-millionaire lifestyle / bf is in jeopardy. She also thinks maybe now he can get the help he needs and will stop hitting her. I'm sure that motivates her to not want Kevin's career to be over.
