Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, whose laid-back, good-humored, often tropically-themed brand of country-laced pop spawned a lucrative one-man business empire, died Friday. He was 76. A cause of death was not immediately released.

Buffett’s death was confirmed through a statement on his official website: “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

Over the course of a 50-year professional career, Buffett collected just one top-10 pop hit: “Margaritaville,” a marimba-laced, tequila-soaked paean to kicking back on the beach in the aftermath of a breakup, which rose to No. 8 on the national charts.

I thought about posting his Cover of Southern Cross, but decided against it.

Will play it safe with this.

I recall when I first heard “Cheeseburger in Paradise”. I was at the annual Nacogdoches BBQ festival years ago and all these people there were jamming to this. My reaction was something along the lines of “what is this crap? let’s get away from these speakers as quickly as possible!”. I thought those people seemingly enjoying this song were nuts. Lol. It is a funny memory that never left me.

    RIP

He wrote some really good songs, he wrote some absolute schlock.

Saw him in concert a couple of times, that was definitely an experience. His fans very much liked to have a good time.

Speaking of alcohol and aging, I was watching a recent YouTube video of a lady teacher who was arrested at her elementary school for drinking on the job. She blew over twice the legal limit at school during the police interrogation and had a cup of wine on her classroom desk. But, she lied the whole time about it. The real point I’m getting at is she said she was 53 and she looked like she was approaching 70 years old. Alcoholism is a helluva thing. Drink up, Margaritaville!

The only reason I know who Boston Blackie is. I listened to a whole bunch of the old radio serials because of this song.

I think this is the absolute schlock mentioned earlier.

I never liked his music although I am sad about his passing.

Years ago when I was in good physical shape, I would work out at lunch at our weight room. We would usually listen to AC/DC or some other hard rock/heavy metal music. One day, one of the guys thought it would be funny to play Jimmy Buffett - needless to say that didn’t go over well.
