Back in maybe July of 1976 I was watching some kids playing basketball at the playground of Louisa May Alcott elementary on Bellfort.

Does anyone remember their names? Those kids could ball.

What was Bob Sura doing that summer?

PS what this thread really needs is a role call of 99ers and any other known dudes in their 50s.

Those kids were Michael, Charles and Akeem. They would later become part of the famous 1984 NBA draft and immortalized as some of the greatest to ever play the game. What a treat.

    That was Burt Steele.

In all seriousness I don't know. There were several guys like that back in the day. There was one guy that would be an NBA player now, but back in the 90's size mattered a lot more, and you couldn't hide poor defenders. He was a white guy about 6'11" and he was very thin, too thin to bang inside, but he was an incredible ball handler and shooter and passer. He would show up in Alief sometimes, usually with a 12 pack of beer and play hammered. He had range to 35 feet and claimed he grew up in Eastern Europe and played there until a knee injury.

Oh I also remember watching Rashard Lewis and Shawn Kemp play pick up ball in Fondren - and then seeing Shawn Kemp spark up a crack pipe between games while Rashard Lewis b****ed that the out door court was too slick.

I went to the same school, he'd come by and play pickup and would hit every 3 pointer no matter who was guarding him. Really makes you realize how good these players in the NBA are - and how good the defense in the NBA is.

I once saw this guy hooping at Candlelight park around the same time 80s-90s; he proceeded to win 3 games in a row, then a red 1933 Ford Eliminator pulled up, 2 ladies w bikinis and permed hair opened up the door, he climbed inside and the car pulled away, cut over to TC Jester/Pinemont and then vanished into the distance, westbound on 290.
