That was the case in the past, but that loophole is closed. There is now no benefit to pulling someone back ... these players are on waivers because the Angels no longer want to pay their salary. They are slightly over the LT and they are trying to get under. If claimed, they will be gone
Doesn't matter if it's an upgrade if it means preventing SEA or TEX from getting an upgrade I feel. That .001 percentage point of being behind for division lead is HUGE.
Astros don't have a single lefty in the bull pen if I'm not mistaken. When rosters expand, maybe bring up Gage and Mushinski.
You can do that? Waive someone and then say "psyche, lets do a trade" I don't see Moore not getting claimed.
It actually makes tons of sense that the Angels are trying to unload salary. Why keep FAs to be if you aren't competing and aren't going to get draft pick compensation for them?
Also gives these guys the potential to latch on with a contender, which is looked kindly upon by the players.
I rather not... because we all know how their usage will be... rather have 7-9 solid RHPs from the bullpen than just having a subpar lefty just because he is a lefty...
The interesting thing is that none of these guys will be eligible for a playoff roster. For pitchers that works because a team can claim a guy and use him to rest young and/or overworked guys to get them ready for the playoffs. A guy like Giolito could allow the team to send Javier to AAA to rest and work on mechanics and then put him back on the playoff roster. Or it could allow Brown to go to the bullpen to conserve his innings. A guy like Moore could help reduce the leverage guys innings for 5 weeks so they are fresher. But that doesn't really work for position players, who would be upended and disrupted for little to no reason then needed again for the playoffs. Either way, it's weird getting someone counting on them and having them contribute to a playoff run, possibly saving or making the team's season then not having them for the playoffs.

Matt Moore would be a tremendous get, he is having a great season. I can't believe the Angels waived him.
I thought the whole point of the August 1st trade deadline is that any MLB player not in your organization by that date isn't playoff eligible? * edit: I just read the entire rule and stand corrected thanks.
Nope, it's the trade deadline, hence the name. The only change was they did away with the silly "waiver trades" during August. Aug 31 has always been the cutoff for postseason eligibility.
Problem is we are so far down the waiver wire. I'd love for us to get another arm, just don't expect it to happen. A) Any team could just decide to claim even if not in contention. B) Waiver Order is: Marlins, Reds, DBacks, Red Sox, Twins, Giants, Cubs, Blue Jays, Phillies, and then finally Astros (pending tonight's games).
If we don't we don't, but the fact we are ahead of both Texas and Seattle in the waiver order at a minimum gives us right of first refusal if any arms end up making it that far.
So, not a believer in lefty lefty or righty righty situational matchups ummm. Guess Dusty isn't either. Framber is our lefty starter we could use in the playoffs, probably. I still would like More in case Framber logs in heavy minutes in a playoff game. One has to have faith in the Astros pitching staff... turning a subpar 2.30 ERA pitcher into a subpar 2.00 ERA with our defense and emphasis on spin rotation/ratio
