Framber and Tucker hit FA in 2026, why does this matter now? Bregman, who I do love, seems eminently replaceable, and that's not until 2025. Again [checks calendar]...why are you worried about this now?
Because if they hit FA the chances of them coming back are incredibly low. We aren't going to outbid others in the open market for them Our only real chance is to extend them before they get there. The closer they get to FA the less incentive they have to sign an extension, their chances of a major injury decrease because there is less time for it to happen (But still possible, ask Ohtani) Our GM certainly understands this, look at what they have done along those lines in Atlanta and listen to his comments after he was hired He will have to convince our owner to change course on that though, cause these guys ain't signing short term deals just so they can continue to wear an Astros jersey
According to baseball reference: Attendance - salary New York Yankees 2,820,168 - $270,202,722 New York Mets 2,027,226 - $258,760,677 Philadelphia Phillies 2,415,187 - $241,362,606 Houston Astros 2,474,028 - $240,388,766 San Diego Padres 2,749,187 - $236,300,139 Los Angeles Angels 2,167,484 - $234,537,055 Los Angeles Dodgers 3,064,233 - $227,091,667 Texas Rangers 2,045,930 30,999 - $205,204,534 Toronto Blue Jays 2,297,316 - $204,440,269 This is actual salary being paid for 2013, not the CBT salary.
I know this is a crazy, crazy thought...but I'll give the GM and Owner an actual offseason together to figure this out.
Ok, cool Not sure which site is right, but it shouldn't surprise anyone that we are right below the CBT line Either way, I wish he would do away with his 5 year max BS and sign Tucker and Framber long term. You have the right to defend him protecting his money by not doing so Hopefully you are right about today and with JV going we only need 5 good hitters to win, that kind of thinking just goes against everything I believe
I am down for crazy. It will be interesting to see what changes we see in the off-season. Most of all, I want to see who the head coach is for next year.
Agree wholeheartedly on two of your points. I have to say I agree with Crane on the luxury tax though. Every GM is on a dollar limit set by the owner. Crane has drawn that line in the right place.
If somebody is willing to throw stacks of cash at them for too many years then good for them. That is the appropriate time to move on.
1) Remind me again…how has Keuchel, Springer and Correa done compared to the contracts they’ve signed? These are the home grown stars that have walked. 2) Where are you getting this from? Pretty sure you’re using secondary market tickets which isn’t accurate. Regardless, go compare our TV rights deals to the Dodgers, Yankees, hell even the Rangers. This is a ridiculous thread. Edit: Go root for the Mets. All those huge contracts and superstars! They’ve been super successful spending a **** ton of money.
If Houstons current competitive window closes, it won’t be because they failed to sign their homegrown stars into their free agent years. It will be because they did 2 things: 1. Failed to continue to develop star level players on their farm. 2. Made bad free agent signings. This team is not as good as prior years mostly due to bad injury luck. It’s most likely a blip. But outside of that they have a few moderately bad contracts on their books for the first time in 10 years (Abreu, McCullers, Montero). They’ve done a great job on the farm even with limited resources. The current roster has 10 homegrown players with <6 years of service time who are on track to put up >1.5 fwar: Alvarez Tucker McCormick Pena Diaz Meyers Valdez Brown Javier France (3 of those are rookies.)
Wished they would have had a better read on the future healths of Charlie Morton vs. Lance McCullers. They’ve spent a lot on free agency money, prospect trades, and more prospect trades simply trying to correct that mistake… while Morton continue to do what he does. I strongly believe Garcia will blossom and extend the window… plus Javier if they figure out his ideal rest pattern.
Lol Your reading comprehension isn’t good Never ever said the Mets are doing it right, in fact just spending on huge free agents has almost never ended well, you HAVE to develop home grown talent But I’m just not down with telling Bregman, Tucker and Framber play it out and best of luck No offense to guys like you who are cool with that, didn’t mean to offend you I want those guys to stay around though and keep winning
This hasn’t happened? Dana made a comment after he was hired that made it seem like we would all but certainly retain Bregman and Altuve. Then, he said Tucker is pretty much a lock we would get something done recently. So yes I will start agreeing with you if they both walk out the door. Until that happens, not sure what the fuss is about.
FTR: I think Tucker should be the exception. Everything about him says he is most likely to get 30 WAR in the next 10 years, and that should be good enough to take that risk. 2026 would look much better. As for Framber, he's older and more of a risk as a pitcher. I would give him 5-6 years @$20-25M or 4-5 yrs @ $25-30 but no more. More than that is too much risk for any pitcher.
The Astros have won 4 AL Pennants, gone to the WS 4 times and won the WS twice. The Astros have averaged 100 wins a season the last 6 years. They have also won the division. 5 of the last 6 years. Crane is a very good owner.
I agree. Even on the bad contracts, they are not written in stone yet. Abreu and Montero have two years left on their deals. How much of Abreu’s struggles are his back? Relievers are up and down, it is possible Montero is very good next year - he has a 2.81 era in the second half so far. as for Lance he is good when healthy.
