I disagree. He could shoot better, but his primary skill was defense and Brooks is a better and more versatile defender.
brooks is so horrific on offense that his defense basically doesn't matter, he's unplayable. Pat bev as an overall player was far better then brooks has ever been. If brooks completely changes his game and really improves then maybe he could reach pat level, but i would be shocked if he does.
I am more concerned that his understanding of being an enforcer is more about himself than the team. I do not think one player does make the whole Memphis Defense.
If he's unplayable, I would love for you to explain how/why he was a starter on a team that won 51 and 56 games the last two years. I understand he choked in that series against the Lakers, but I think it's being overblown. He's been a key contributor to an excellent team the last few years, and his teammates described him as "the heart and soul" of the team. I understand that the Grizzlies let him go, but they added Marcus Smart to a roster that features Jaren Jackson and Steven Adams. They can get by without Brooks. We don't have JJJ, Adams or Smart. Brooks will instantly be the best defender on the team and a culture setter for Udoka. I'm optimistic. I get that people feel he's being overpaid. I don't have a problem with that position at all. What I cannot for the life of me understand is why people here think they understand the value of Dillon Brooks more than Ime Udoka, who is reportedly who wanted Brooks prioritized as a target.
Why would ime have a better understanding then anyone else? He’s not a gm, and coaches are almost as bad as players when it comes to evaluation. I don’t care about the lakers series, that’s not relevant to me. I only care about how he performs in the regular season and to me he flat out sucks. Him playing while eason sits on the bench is utter idiocy, and shows udoka is a moron. Is it possible that i’m wrong and you’re right? Sure, but till i see something that shows he’s not god awful my view won’t change.
You're doubling down on the fact that you're a better talent evaluator and have a better understanding of how Brooks can benefit this team than Ime Udoka. Okay. You do you.
No, idk if i’m better or worse then udoka. Based on what i’ve seen so far i’d assume i’m better but who knows, small sample. Neither of us have any experience in the field. I definitely am a believer in the metrics though, which say brooks is awful, and that matches what I see as well as the baseline offense/defense ratings
The metrics that nba gms trust the most definitely don’t say that. The nba doesn’t revolve around VORP, that’s not even that reliable of a stat.
Dillon Brooks is so bad, why does Taylor Jenkins start him on a 50 win team, and team Canada start him over Lu Dort? I know the ace armchair head coaches on Clutchfans must have an answer.
https://hoopshype.com/lists/advanced-stats-nba-real-plus-minus-rapm-win-shares-analytics/ The top 5 in most reliable advanced stats that nba gms trust all rate Brooks as a reliable starter at worst. DARKO, EPM, LEBRON, RAPTOR, RAPM. Not a coincidence is that all of these are not based on boxscore stats, but rather measure impact on the game through regularized +/- that take into account teammates and opponents. Some of these stats you need to pay a membership fee to view and made by people working in nba front offices. They are way more reliable than publicly available boxscore based stats like bball reference. They are also the stats that rate fvv as a top 20 player which is why he’s being paid $40m and Brooks $20m.
Ya i’ve tried to look at those buy some require pay and some were impossible to find what i was trying to. Have you seen how he rates by those?
2023 DARKO: -0.1 EPM: +0.3 LEBRON: -0.06 RAPTOR: -0.5 RAPM: +1.02 Anything around a 0 is a solid starter, +3 allstar, +5 all nba, +7 hof
Interesting, those strongly go against the eye test. Wonder how much of that is because of his awesome teammates
Regularized +/- was specifically invented to account for both teammates and opponents during the minutes the player is on the court. This is why raw +/- is mostly useless while advanced stats based on regularized +/- are the gold standard for advanced stats used by nba gms. I promise you the Rockets use their own version of these stats and that’s why they gave Brooks and fvv the contracts that they did. Especially Fvv who rates as a top 20 player.
In regards to the eye test, I think that’s because the eye test overrates how bad he is when he is jacking 20 shots a game. In reality, those are the games the Grizzlies are missing one or both of their top scorers and Brooks is forced into a larger role on offense, which he isn’t good at. The eye test sees how bad he is at this, however regularized +/- does not punish him as much because it accounts for the poor offensive players he is playing with when top scorers are injured, someone had to take those shots and if it wasn’t Brooks it still would not have been much better. I made a thread on this: https://bbs.clutchfans.net/threads/how-i-learned-to-love-dillon-brooks.320593/ When Ja, Bane and Jjj are all healthy Brooks averages 10 shots a game. It’s no surprise that he took 6 shots in team Canada’s game today.
Yeah, I’m watching some of the FIBAs. Some thoughts from Day 1. Brooks was great, but Shai is next level. MVP will be between Shai, Luka and Jalen Brunson, IMO CAN dominated completely a French team with NBA. players, they are one of the favorites. Rudy Gobert is a total joke. Will likely go down as the biggest disconnect between white-bloggerboy-stathead vs regular hoops observer. Just a testament of how much the ANALytics scam distorted NBA business. It’s like if Chuck Hayes back in the day got a $200M contract and was then traded for 4 FRPs + Walker Kessler Giddey had a good game for the Boomers. Very talented and unique, Imalways like him when I watch him. But then, when I look at his +/- with Shai, they are awful. It’s a bad fit between the two, OKC will have to do something. Rockets Legend Bruno Fernando was not good for Angola… I think starting him over Sengun will go down as the iconic move of this most nightmarish period of the Rockets franchise history…
He’s just so absolutely awful at every aspect of offense, and fouls so much (which is the absolute worst thing you can do on defense), and is just so god damn stupid. I’m encouraged that some of those metrics say he’s actually solid though. I like the bball reference ones because they tend to match what i see and what i believe in terms of general basketball philosophy but definitely open to more data, the more the better. Appreciate you!
I agree with this. Dillon is our leader, our best defender. Udoka knows that! and this casual fans wannabe thinks they are better than the coach of memphis, coach of canada and udoka.. LOL
