I agree. But he has no burst or wiggle, he needs designed rollouts to be effective.
He isn’t making plays from nothing

Huge difference in what Dak, Burrow and Mahomes can do off script.
Stroud does not have that.
Which is why he’s Matt Ryan and not Burrow/Mahomes

Texans tight end Dalton Keene is back practicing

Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel told reporters they will hold WR Jaylen Waddle (midsection injury) out of contact drills in joint practices & game vs. Texans this week. Waddle told team he’s ready and wants to go but McDaniel said they are protecting him from himself. Not long-term.

We got team drills on both practice fields. CJ Stroud starting with the 1’s against the Dolphins’ first team.

First fight: Christian Harris and Dolphins RB Jeff Wilson. Harris slung him around to the sideline and Wilson took a swing. Both were pulled back by their teammates.

A second fight, again on the Texans defensive side. A group tackle on the left turned into a brief push-around. Dissolved in a few seconds.

Two throws from CJ Stroud in the first series, two completions . The second completion was a pass over the middle to Dalton Schultz.

CJ Stroud tríes to throw it deep to Xavier Hutchinson on a deep post route but it was a little out of reach.

During the first session of team with 1s vs 1s Both DLs have been physical and have slowed down both running attacks. The Texans have allowed tua and Tyreek to connect on a couple plays for good gains. CJ and Dalton Schultz have hooked up for a couple competitions.

CJ Stroud has had a few plays where he’s not sure where to go with the ball. Holding it on a few that would have resulted in a sack.

George Fant is struggling with Jaelan Phillips.

Christian Harris just intercepted Tua.

CJ has gone deep a few times but each time has fell incomplete.

CJ and Tank connected on an intermediate gain. Not sure if it woulda been a sack or Stroud just being a playmaker.

Davis Mills just threw a pick to Andrew VanGinkel.

CJ Stroud just threw a short pass over the middle to Nick Vannett. Vannett was stripped by LB David Long. Recovered by Dolphins.

Skylar Thompson just threw a 70 yard td to Braxton Berrioa. I think the second team defense was out there on that one. (3rd team)

The first team period is over. Watching the offense , I’d say Dolphins D got the better of Texans offense. Texans having trouble with the pressure.

Dalton Schultz was the standout catches against the Dolphins first and second team defense. He was the only one making plays for CJ.

The Texans first team defense allowed some underneath passes. Some got YAC. Some didn’t. DL was effective against the Dolphins OL. Harris with the interception of Tua.

Dolphins DBs for the most part had success against the Texans WR. X. Howard had a PBU guarding Noah Brown. Flag was thrown though. CJ went deep to Nico Collins twice and both fell incompletion. A pass to Robert Woods fell incomplete. A deep ball to Hutch also fell Inc.

Red zone drills. CJ Stroud throws a TD in the corner to Tank Dell.

CJ Stroud threw a TD pass to Dalton Schultz in red zone. Schultz is killing today.

Team redzone. The Texans D allowed 2 tds to Tua. Then forced an INC on tua in the end zone. On the other side CJ Stroud had a highlight play where he was under pressure and threw a TD off balance to Dalton Schultz. Dolphins media says he was sacked by Ogbah. TD IN MY EYEZ

Tank Dell has three red zone touchdowns today from CJ Stroud. Crowd is going wild.

Tua threw another td in the end zone. It was tight defense and coulda been outta bounce but the ref said td.

DP just had a very very nice run for a good gain.

CJ Stroud just had an effective drive on the move the ball period. Got multiple first downs to Robert Wood.

Tua also had an effective drive on the move the ball period. Got multiple first downs to Chosen, Smythe, and Ezukanma.

First two plays of 2 minute drill, Tua hits Durham Smythe and Tyreek hill for big gains. But Jalen Pitre gets a pick-6 two plays later, while yelling “Let’s go!” as he runs down the sidelines

Tua just threw a pick 6 to Jalen Pitre to end practice. Special play by Pitre.

This erased what could’ve been a rough end to the day. Tua hit Durham Smythe and Tyreek Hill for deep gains of 38 and 16 yards right before the interception.

For me it's the little things, like seeing Will Anderson sprint back to the line after the rep. That's old school reps, excited to see him play this year.

In a simulated two-minute drill, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa delivered two downfield strikes: a 38-yard heave to tight end Durham Smythe over the middle, a 16-yard crosser to wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Houston’s secondary was scattered. Suddenly it struck back.

Tagovailoa slung a slant leftward. Safety Jalen Pitre jumped the route, snagged the football, then sprinted down the sideline. The entire Texans team chased him down in celebration. Pitre passed the media tent near the 25 shouting “Let’s go!” He passed the end zone, passed onlooking owner Cal McNair and passed through the open fence at the edge of the field.

Fans hollered from the bleachers. An air horn blared. Practice was over.

“Big moment,” linebacker Christian Harris said. “That’s something we need.”

Sometimes only drama can combat drama. Pitre is one of over 40 veteran players under contract who’ve experienced some of the miseries of Houston’s past three seasons. Pitre’s pick-six on Wednesday was a seminal moment, the sort of core memory that can form the new identity of a young team that’s still maturing under first-time head coach DeMeco Ryans.

“He’s the GOAT,” defensive end Will Anderson Jr. said of Pitre. “Honestly, he works his butt off every day. I can’t say enough good things about him. He brings the team up. He has a lot of energy every day. It’s something about him. He has that tick in him that makes him go, and it’s contagious and it spreads to the whole defense.”

The Texans intercepted Tagovailoa twice on Wednesday. The fourth-year veteran, who placed ninth in MVP voting last season, tried to sneak a no-look pass by Harris during an early team drill, and the linebacker, who’d dropped in coverage amidst a crowded rush on the right side, plucked the pass and returned it for a defensive touchdown.

There were times when the Dolphins bested the Texans. Miami’s receiving corps is perhaps the NFL’s fastest. They are a formidable test for a promising Texans secondary. Hill, a four-time All-Pro, corralled multiple catches throughout practice, including a deep comeback along the left sideline against backup cornerback Shaquill Griffin. Dolphins backup quarterback Skylar Thompson flung a deep pass over the Texans’ second-team defense to former Jets receiver Braxton Berrios for a touchdown.

In red-zone drills, Tagovailoa threw three touchdowns on end-zone fades. He lobbed a score to running back Raheem Mostert over Pitre along the back left pylon, another to Berrios again over Pitre in the same spot, then found backup receiver River Cracraft over safety Jimmie Ward along the back right pylon.

The Dolphins have one of the best defensive front sevens in the NFL, and they made it difficult for C.J. Stroud and the offense in teams drills by consistently getting pressure on the rookie.

But the Texans’ offense was dominant in the red zone drills. Stroud threw five red-zone touchdowns, including three to rookie wide receiver Tank Dell.

Dell and tight end Dalton Schultz were among the standouts for the offense in the joint practice. Schultz has battled through injuries early in camp, but he looks completely healthy now. The Dolphins’ safeties couldn’t contain him in coverage. He used his big body to make some contested catches.

Dell has come on strong in recent weeks. He’s only 5-foot-8, 165 pounds, but he’s quick with his route running. He led the Texans with five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown in the team’s preseason game against the Patriots last week.

He’s been both Davis Mills’ and Stroud’s favorite target recently.

Stroud getting first team reps
Ryans says there’s still a competition. But Stroud has taken all the first-team reps over Mills for the second straight week. It would make sense if the Texans were to name Stroud the starter after Saturday’s game if he plays well.

Stroud and Mills have played at about the same level in training camp. On Wednesday, Stroud was a little better. Mills was picked off by linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel. Both Mills and Stroud have thrown five interceptions in training camp.

Stroud played in two series last week against the Patriots. He’s expected to get more snaps against the Dolphins.

Stroud chats with Tua
Stroud and Tua Tagovailoa talked on the field for about five to 10 minutes after practice. It appeared Tagovailoa was giving Stroud some tips. Tagovailoa had his best statistical season with the Dolphins last year. The 25-year-old finished with a NFL-high 105.5 passer rating.

Anderson against Armstead
Anderson, Houston’s No. 3 overall pick, matched up against four-time Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead on two plays during the second round of team drills on Wednesday. The first play was a screen to the opposite side, and on the second, Anderson charged from a standing position, attempted to spin, then stumbled.

The former two-time SEC defensive player of the year has been a disruptive force in training camp so far. But the rookie is still refining his pass-rush techniques, and his plays against Armstead are valuable. Anderson has often faced teammate Laremy Tunsil, now the NFL’s highest-paid offensive tackle, in practice, but there has been a significant drop-off in talent on Houston’s depth since right tackle Tytus Howard underwent hand surgery on Aug. 7.

Anderson is learning he can’t always win with speed. Tunsil and Armstead are both proficient pass blockers who move laterally with ease. Several of the NFL’s best tackles are on the Texans’ schedule: Ronnie Stanley (Ravens), Braden Smith (Colts), Jake Matthews (Falcons), et. al. Anderson knows this. It’s partly why he bulked up from 243 pounds to 260 over the summer. It’ll be notable in Thursday’s joint practice to see if Anderson beats Armstead, and if he does it by using his strength. Anderson says it’s an underrated part of his game.

“Really, they sleep on my power,” Anderson said. “So, they see me and my frame and say, ‘Oh, he’s probably just a speed guy,’ then I — boom — I hit them with power as a counter or anything like that. So, it’s just good having that speed-to-power that a lot of people wouldn’t think I’d have with my body type.”

I thought Stroud has beat Mills out decidedly? I was told it wasn’t even a competition?

CJ Stroud again worked exclusively with the first team, and while it’s just a guesstimate, he seemed to take about 80% of the total reps among quarterbacks on the day.

During the first team period the Texans offensive line looked like this:

LT Laremy Tunsil
LG Kenyon Green
C Juice Scruggs
RG Shaq Mason
RT George Fant

OL Michael Dieter spelled Green a little bit toward the middle portion of practice but Green finished the day at RG.

Stroud had an excellent first series, completing both of his passes to tight ends Dalton Schultz and Eric Tomlinson.

I saw something I hadn’t yet this camp. Stroud checking into other plays at the line of scrimmage. He saw something he didn’t like on the 4th snap of the first series and checked into an outside zone run, handing the ball off to Dameon Pierce who ran for a first down and then some.

On the second series, Stroud tried to air it out a little bit and over-threw both Xavier Hutchinson and Nico Collins on the drive.

Devin Singletary ran well during the period. He hit the hole hard and busted through for two first down runs.

On the third series, Stroud hit Schultz, who was being covered by Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard, for a big gain. It was a beautiful play design as Pierce started in the slot, can in fast motion to line up in a trips-left set. That allowed Schultz to get one-on-one with Howard, whom the Texans exposed all day.

Tank Dell continued to shine. He had a terrific practice, catching three touchdowns on the morning, all of which were from Stroud during 11-on-11 periods.

Keep on keeping on

Texans linebacker Christian Harris had himself another day. He intercepted Tua Tagovailoa in an earlier team period. He continues to be in the right spot at the right time to make plays, is clearly seeing the field really well in the new defense.

The second-year pro, Harris also got into it briefly with Dolphins running back Jeff Wilson after a play.

Receiver Steven Sims had a nice practice. He made a couple of really nice catches during the two-minute drill with Stroud at quarterback.

Not sure how he’s going to factor in a seemingly predictable receiver room already with Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Robert Woods, Noah Brown, John Metchie and Xavier Hutchinson locks to make the team. That’s six guys, but Sims continues to have a really good camp the past two weeks.

Texans cooked a Dolphin

Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard had a rough day. Tank Dell caught a touchdown over him in the back left corner of the end zone during the red zone period, Nico Collins beat him badly on a go-route in an earlier period and Noah Brown absolutely cooked Howard on a dig-route in which Howard was called for holding.

Today was "scuffle" day.

At the beginning, I'll start at the end. I don't know that I've seen an ending to practice quite like the one that happened today. The Pick Six Heard 'round Houston. The final drill of the day was a team end of half situation and Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa threw two DIMES on the first two plays of the drive to set the Dolphins up in field goal range. With 30 seconds or so on the clock, he dropped to pass again, with his eyes down the field on the right side. DB Jalen Pitre played a hunch that Tua would do that to freeze the defenders on the other side but come back his way.

Pitre was exactly, 100% correct and made Tua pay, taking that throw to the house the other way.

I was standing right in line with that throw, so I could see Pitre squatting and feeling for the route. Pitre took off in front of that slant before Tua even turned to look that way. He broke on the pass AND THEN Tua threw it. Pitre played that so perfectly. He knew the situation and knew that Tua likes those slants/glance routes, especially in that situation. He broke in front, snatched it and headed south.

What a way to end that practice!!

I wasn't totally sure how to feel about the entire day. Some good and some bad, but that one play lit up the entire fanbase, the players, the coaches and the entire sideline. I mean, it was a raucous ending. The entire team ran down to meet Pitre in the end zone and celebrate as they should have. I didn't watch much of the defense at all today, so that was really the extent of my viewing, for the most part, but I'll be damned if it wasn't the perfect ending to the day.

Like I said, I spent most of my time with the offense for all drills, with a little defense mixed in, but not much. I was curious to see how the Texans OL would hold up against a WILDLY talented Dolphins defensive front.

One of the first reps that got me charged up was rookie center Juice Scruggs facing one of the largest human beings I've seen on a football field - Dolphins DT Raekwon Davis. OH. MY. GOD. That dude is a beast. So, Davis jumped offsides immediately out the chute and I remember thinking "Oh man, he's twitched up today." This is going to be rough for Juice. Uh, wrong. On the next snap, Scruggs anchored and locked up the hulking Davis on the first rep in a joint practice ever for Juice. I was pumping my fist after that rep.

One rep prior to that one, veteran OL Shaq Mason locked up Zach Sieler in a one-on-one. Mason puts absolute clamps on Sieler on that one-on-one rep.

Now, Davis would get his revenge, stuffing the first Texans run of the day in team period number one and Sieler batted down a C.J. Stroud pass later in team period number two. But, in that one-on-one session, the Texans interior dudes won handily.

Dolphins OLB Bradley Chubb is built like very few pass rushers I've ever seen. He's agile and quick and his bull rush was on point today. That said, Texans LT Laremy Tunsil got him hooked a couple of times in the run game throughout the practice, which sprung RBs Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary a few times.

Former Dolphin/current Texans OL Michael Deiter had two or three solid reps in one-on-ones, holding up against bull rushes a few times.

I went over at that point to watch the defensive rushers and the first rep that I saw was Texans DL Khalil Davis working a swim move over the Dolphins RG for a win. But, the most impressive rep that I saw on either side today was Texans rookie DL Dylan Horton. He EXPLODED off the snap right into the chest of the Dolphins LT, then he immediately ripped inside with his right arm and got totally free to the QB. That was highly impressive.

(as an aside, I was studying TCU defensive players for the 2024 NFL Draft late last night and Horton just went off in that game, posting a sack and TFL in the first half against Texas. So, when I saw him again this morning, I was reminded what a specimen he truly is.)

Texans DL Byron Cowart flew upfield past the Dolphins center for a win. I could hear the Texans DL and coaches really pumping up Cowart after that rep. He got on the edge of the center immediately and charged upfield into the QB's lap.

Veteran Texans DL Maliek Collins threw one of the nastiest spin moves that I've seen. He spun around so quick and fast that he torqued himself right into the ground. He was wide open to the QB after the spin, but couldn't maintain his balance. I mean, he did a damn whirlybird it was so fast.

Then, Texans DL Jerry Hughes deked upfield and darted back inside CLEAN for a sack.

The aforementioned Texans DL Khalil Davis had another strong rep, finishing late on his rush just when it seemed he was blocked. Then, a few reps later, he had a solid spin move to win. Man, there must be something about those Nebraska guys - Collins and Davis - those spin moves were super nice.

Texans rookie DL Will Anderson Jr. came with some power on the two reps that I saw. He first got slowed down by one Dolphins LT, but on the second, he actually, and I've never seen this, fell to his knees on his bull rush yet never stopped moving the tackle backwards. He slipped on his rush at some point, but he had displaced the tackle to a point that he got right back to his feet and kept powering the tackle back into the QB.

I went back to watch the end of the Texans OL/Dolphins DL and caught Dolphins DE/OLB Jaelen Phillips dominating the edge on a Texans OT. Now, let me say that won't be the last OT this season that falls prey to Phillps and his impressive pass rush abilities. He's going to "GET" everyone he faces. He's an absolute menace. Phillips and Chubb are flat out nasty on the edge.

There was a little bit of jawing once the horn sounded to end the OL/DL one-on-one drills, even coming from some guys that weren't practicing. Nothing resulted from it, so all good natured fun…I guess??

Once the team drills started, the Texans offense showed plenty of POP in the run game. That was the one thing that I really took out of today. The run game opened up some open lanes throughout the day. The pass game had to work for everything it got today, though.

Continued:

It started well with QB C.J. Stroud throwing nicely to FB/TE Andrew Beck out in the flat for a completion off the bootleg action.

The next play was one of my favorites of the day. At the line of scrimmage, Stroud stood and studied the defensive set for a while. I wasn't sure whether he was sure of what he saw or what, and it was just curious to me. Then, he signaled something to his offense and that was echoed throughout the offense. He then handed the ball off to RB Dameon Pierce who blew through a massive hole on the left side of the formation. Not totally sure what C.J. saw, but he got the team into the proper play for sure. THAT'S quarterbacking.

On the next play, Stroud ripped one to TE Dalton Schultz on an over route. He put that ball on the money for sure.

RB Dare Ogunbowale hit an inside run WIDE open. I mean, that was a gaping hole in the middle of the formation and it was the cleanest run throughout all of training camp.

OH, man, I'm so happy Dolphins LB David Long Jr left the Titans. Holy cow. He made life miserable for this Texans offense at times on Wednesday. He timed up his blitzes perfectly. He ran through on zone plays for TFLs. Thank god that we don't have to face him anymore up in Tennessee. THANK YOU DOLPHINS!!

Dolphins DT Raekwon Davis came up with another sack, a coverage sack, just before the Texans exploited the edge on an outside run. Laremy Tunsil pinned one of the Dolphins edge players back to the inside, which allowed Devin Singletary to burst off the edge for a long run.

Stroud JUST missed on the next two throws. He threw with Dolphins in his pocket space to Xavier Hutchinson on the over route and Nico Collins deep down the field. He was a hair off on those throws, but I liked the timing of getting rid of the ball better today. The Dolphins speed QBs up for sure and have the secondary to strap up the receivers. This was a tremendous test for the Texans offense for sure.

Stroud then hit TE Dalton Schultz with a quick hitter with a blitzer barreling down on him from depth. That was one heck of a throw.

On the next play, Stroud was forced out of the pocket and threw complete to rookie WR Tank Dell. It would've been a sack because the pass protection dam broke wide open, unfortunately, allowing Dolphins in the backfield from everywhere.

Davis Mills then came in and threw a DIME on an out route to WR Johnny Johnson III for a completion. That might have been Mills' best throw of the day. Unfortunately, he threw a pick to Dolphins LB Andrew Van Ginkel two plays later on his not so best throw of the day.

The next series of offensive plays…blitz/throwaway, drop, tipped pass, DPI, Kohou PBU. In other words, not as successful as earlier in practice. Thankfully, recently acquired QB E.J. Perry stepped in late in the drill and threw a beautiful out route to WR Jalen Camp. Perry got that throw off thanks to a solid blitz pickup by RB Gerrid Doaks.

Once the Texans went to the red zone for team drills WR Tank Dell went OFF. He had a touchdown off of the scramble drill on the far side from Stroud. Then, he got open on the corner route for a TD from Davis Mills. That was a DIME throw and catch.

The catch of the day, though, was in that same drill when Stroud moved to his right and found TE Dalton Schultz in the end zone. Stroud was hurried so he got rid of the ball off platform and he wasn't as accurate as he normally is. Schultz reached out and snagged the pass with one hand for the touchdown. That was TRULY impressive.

Then, on the final play of the red zone team period, Stroud went back to Dell on a similar corner route for Dell's third touchdown of the period. That's right, THREE TDs in that period for Dell and a great way to finish that red zone drill.

Stroud then led his team down the field in an end of half situation drill. He hit Robert Woods over the middle and then Steven Sims for a quick catch-and-run to help set up what would've been a half-ending FG. Then, it was time for Pitre to save the day.

Not you but I don't know why the GOAL POST keep moving on CJ's mobility. At first he was a statue, then it was he's not mobile, now it's he's mobile but he does not have any wiggle.

I can only go by what I see and hear. In the N.E game, he escaped from a defender around the edge and picked up yards and during the scrimmage today, by many who were there, he scaped the picket and made plays on the move!

That's ALL I want to see and it should be all any of us what to see. And as far as 40 times, one of the most best WR of all time ran a 4.7 40 time, Jerry Rice!

I go by what a player does in the game, some players play faster during the game and I think CJ just happen to be one of those players.

I've had trouble getting my head around this comparison if we're talking about mobility only. Ryan had some elusiveness but I never thought of him as quick or fast.

I just checked their 40yd times at the combine. Ryan was 4.89 and Stroud was 4.48. 4.48 is skill position fast so I kept digging.

The avg 40 time for WRs, CBs and RBs is 4.48-4.49. QB is 4.81.

Obviously that's straight line speed and doesn't account for wiggle or quickness but Stroud has more than a few steps on Ryan in the speed department. He's much faster than I thought.

Not you but I don't know why the GOAL POST keep moving on CJ's mobility. At first he was a statue, then it was he's not mobile, now it's he's mobile but he does not have any wiggle.

I can only go by what I see and hear. In the N.E game, he escaped from a defender around the edge and picked up yards and during the scrimmage today, by many who were there, he scaped the picket and made plays on the move!

That's ALL I want to see and it should be all any of us what to see. And as far as 40 times, one of the best WR of all time ran a 4.7 40 time, Jerry Rice!

I go by what a player does in the game, some players play faster during the game and I think CJ just happen to be one of those players. Henshowed it against Georgia in college, against N.E last week and again today during their scrimmage.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Mobile doesn’t mean straight line to begin with.
He isn’t escaping anything, that’s what mobile is.
The only reason you specifically, think he’s mobile is because of the color of his skin.

He has proven time and time again he is a pocket QB. No one is moving any goalposts except for you idiots that want him to be something he’s not

Who said anything about skin color? Stroud has been compared to black and white qbs. I don’t think anyone really cares about that. We just want a winning football team finally.

And, I’m perfectly fine with Strouds skillset. But it is not and will never be the new norm in the league. In the AFC alone his is a bottom 3 athlete at QB
