A campaign fundraiser for indicted Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has himself been indicted on four federal felony counts stemming from emails and phone calls in which he allegedly impersonated a high-ranking aide to
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Samuel Miele, who worked for Santos during the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, is facing four counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday.

The feds say Miele posed as Meyer while communicating with more than a dozen potential donors during the last half of 2021. He did this “falsely and without authorization,” to raise money for Santos—and a 15 percent commission for himself, the indictment says. Miele made phone calls as Meyer, and sent emails from an account set up in Meyer’s name, according to the indictment. The funds were then deposited into Santos’ campaign account, after which Miele got his cut, the indictment states.

McCarthy with the narrow majority isn’t going to make any strong moves to remove Santos. McCarthy has to deal with several issues that could break the GOP majority such as impeachment and a government shut down. He needs every single vote he can get.

When an outside firm hired by then-congressional hopeful George Santos in 2021 delivered a secret internal report detailing aspects of the candidate's checkered background,

But even after New York voters elected Santos the following year and news reports began exposing concerning questions about his conduct, that original report was never made public, until now.

Portions of the report, published here for the first time, show that long before Santos' election, questions had surfaced about his marriage, his family's claimed link to the Holocaust, and his alleged ties to "companies that have been accused of fraud and scamming customers."

The report's conclusions ultimately circulated among campaign strategists for top House Republicans and led the Congressional Leadership Fund, the primary super PAC dedicated to electing House Republicans, to withhold its support of Santos, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

Asked by CBS News about the report, a spokesperson for Stefanik pointed to a comment previously made to CNN.

"Congresswoman Stefanik supported all GOP nominees in targeted New York seats just like every other New York Republican elected official, candidate, NRCC, NYGOP, and the entire House Republican leadership team," a Stefanik campaign spokesperson said in January. The spokesperson added that Stefanik was not aware of allegations against Santos until after his election.

 

George Santos and aide appear to be discussing plea deals with feds



Rep. George Santos and his former campaign aide, both indicted by federal prosecutors, appear to be in plea talks with the government, according to court papers filed Tuesday.

Prosecutors in the Santos case asked the judge overseeing the case to delay a court hearing set for Thursday because “the parties have continued to discuss possible paths forward in this matter.”
They added: “The parties wish to have additional time to continue those discussions.”

 

Guess they weren't able to find "possible paths forward"...
