As Tank Dell headed toward the podium, DeMeco Ryans came back in, tapped him on the shoulder and said jokingly, “Hey, stop taking our defense apart.”

Derek Stingley just limped off the field. Jumped up to make a PBU got up gingerly. Didn’t look serious.

Kenyon Green joins the offensive linemen on the sideline. He’s in sweatpants, a T-shirt and a bucket hat. No apparent braces, tape or anything like that.

Will Anderson Jr. with two major plays from the left side. Went free for a TFL along the left edge. Beat George Fant on a would-be sack.

Nick Vannett fumbled a pass from Davis Mills that was scooped up by Blake Cashman. Probably would’ve been a defensive TD.

Jimmie Ward is flying around. Hawked a ball over the middle incomplete. Was low and struck Tank Dell in the legs. Dell did a twirl in the air and hobbled off a bit. He appears fine.

Jimmie Ward is FLYING around today. Just forced a fumble on Noah Brown. Then forced a PBU on Tank Dell.

Jimmie Ward just popped the ball loose from Noah Brown after a catch, a fumble recovered by the defense.

D’Angelo Ross just broke Neville Hewitt’s ankles on a special teams drill. One sprints, the other tries to block. Ross gave him a little shake and Hewitt went to the ground. An “oooh” from the fans here. Eric Murray mimed his own fall on the side.

Tank Dell just made another acrobatic catch. Leaped for one on the right sideline and tapped his toes. In bounds, the ref says. A long crosser from Mills.

Christian Harris and Devin Singletary get a little chippy. Harris struck him with his shoulder to the ground on a checkdown. Singletary got up, shoved Harris, and Harris lifted his arms until a teammate came and pulled him away.

C.J. Stroud just hit Noah Brown 40 yards downfield over Jimmie Ward. Nice deep ball.

Adam Humphries makes his first catch on his first practice. A deep crosser toward the left sideline, well-placed by Davis Mills. Jacob Martin may have had a shot on Mills with live action. But still a nice throw and catch.

E.J. Perry gets his first reps behind Stroud and Mills. Rep I should say. A handoff. All but one play in that series of team drills went to Stroud and Mills.

Henry To’oTo’o continues to be everywhere. Darted into the backfield for what would’ve been a TFL.

Texans left guard Kenyon Green is not practicing today. Michael Deiter is there in his place. Patterson is at left guard today behind Deiter. Jimmy Morrissey at center.

Case Keenum is still on the roster — Kendall Sheffield and Xazavian Valladay are not — but he is not at practice after the Texans signed EJ Perry

Newly signed Texans wide receiver Adam Humphries wearing No. 27

Keenum got something going on? Demeco wouldn't address his whereabouts.

Jonathan M Alexander @jonmalexander · 12m A few people were curious about what I thought about today’s Texans’ practice.

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/te...ns-training-camp-fight-cj-stroud-18293733.php

C.J. Stroud still running with the 1s

Stroud’s performance in Thursday’s preseason game didn’t cost him first-team reps. The interception is a thing of the past.

He still ran with the first-team offense Sunday, and threw the ball well in team drills.

Stroud completed 10-of-16 passes, which included a 35-yard deep pass to Noah Brown who managed to get behind the defense. It was one of Stroud’s better throws of camp. One of the more interesting things to see is how often Stroud is to move in the pocket. One of the criticism of Stroud coming out of Ohio State was that he didn’t use his legs much.

But in camp, he’s taken off with the football, scrambled and he threw on the run Sunday.

Meanwhile, veteran Davis Mills, who was running with the second-team defense, was 10-of-14 with two touchdowns.

One of his touchdowns was a screen pass to Steven Sims, who avoided multiple defenders and raced to the end zone. The other was to Andrew Beck in the corner of the end zone.

Mills has continued to play well, despite being second on the unofficial depth chart. It appears the Texans are focused on Stroud figuring things out as the potential starter.

But Mills has definitely shown improvement since Year 2.

Jimmie Ward all over the field

    Hasson Ridgeway leaves practice early

Veteran defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway, who had been one of the standouts in practice recently, suffered an injury in practice Sunday. He was schedule to speak to media members, but he didn’t return.

Ridgeway played well in the team’s preseason game.

Ryans lauded him for running from sideline to sideline as a defensive tackle. He provides quality depth for the Texans defensive tackle room, which should be a strength this season compared to 2022, when they gave up a league-high in rushing yards.

It’s unclear the depth of his injury. But Ridgeway was third on the depth chart.

Will Anderson Jr. vs. Laremy Tunsil

Anderson has played lights out in camp so far. The rookie doesn’t slow down.

But there’s a reason Tunsil is the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL. Anderson started three straight possessions on the right side against Tunsil, and Tunsil locked him up on three straight possessions.

On the next series, Anderson went against Tunsil again two more times. Both times, Tunsil locked him up.

On the next play, Anderson went up against right tackle George Fant. Anderson finally broke free for a sack.

    Other notes

Quarterback Case Keenum, who played the entire second half of Thursday’s preseason game, got the day off and was not at practice.

Guard Kenyon Green was at practice but he did not dress out in pads. It was likely a day off for the second-year offensive lineman.

Offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson, who was out the past week with an injury, returned to practice. He went in at left guard behind Michael Deiter. Jimmy Morrissey was the second-team center behind Juice Scruggs.

Tight end Teagan Quitoriano practiced again for the second consecutive day. The Texans officially removed him from their active PUP list. And it comes at a nice time. The Texans have been down multiple tight ends since the start of camp. They need the depth at the position.

Love to hear about CJ's mobility in the pocket. Seems like the O-line is going to need time to jell.

Im thinking around game 3 or 4 we should start seeing the offense click.

Can’t wait to see Stroud and Dell doing things on Sundays, but I’m really starting to get excited about the defense. I felt like there was more talent there last year than what they played like. If Demeco can turn it around and get them all playing to potential it could be a very quick turnaround.

kinda sad to see xazavian valladay cut.. ppl seemed excited to snag him and i thought he had some potential. Maybe it just didn’t show up.

Will Anderson Jr. is not practicing today.

Kenyon Green is back practicing after resting yesterday.

Texans tight end Jordan Murray is back practicing today.

Laremy Tunsil with an apparent rest day today. … First I’ve seen Michael Deiter line up at left tackle.

John Metchie is not practicing today.

Maliek Collins is not practicing today

There’s the first fight. Whole team piles on and a player jumps on top. Didn’t see where it got heated immediately. But it came after M.J. Stewart popped someone in a crowded lane between the guards. Devin Singletary took offense to Christian Harris’s striking him too hard yesterday. … Just asked @SeanTPendergast and we agree from memory. There wasn’t a single fight in the last two training camps. There’s two in two days. DeMeco Ryans said “finally” yesterday and wants his team to have an edge. There is a good energy that can stem from some of this.

C.J. Stroud just rushed a throw while getting blitzed in a team red zone drill. Floated one on the left sideline and it was picked by Steven Nelson.

CJ Stroud just threw a TD to Robert Woods in the red zone.

Tank just caught a TD pass second big play he’s made today.
