This is too funny if you ask me. They want the Jesus with the beefy biceps and AR15, not the soft Jewish Jesus preaching be kind.

Evangelicals Are Now Rejecting 'Liberal' Teachings of Jesus
By Aila Slisco On 8/9/23 at 7:17 PM EDT
An evangelical leader is warning that conservative Christians are now rejecting the teachings of Jesus as "liberal talking points."

Russell Moore, former top official for the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) who is now the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, said during an interview aired on NPR's All Things Considered this week that Christianity is in a "crisis" due to the current state of right-wing politics.

Moore has found himself at odds with other evangelical leaders due to his frequent criticism of former President Donald Trump. He resigned his position with the SBC in 2021 following friction over his views on Trump and a sex abuse crisis among Southern Baptist clergy.

In his NPR interview, Moore suggested that Trump had transformed the political landscape in the U.S. to the point where some Christian conservatives are openly denouncing a central doctrine of their religion as being too "weak" and "liberal" for their liking.

"Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching—'turn the other cheek'—[and] to have someone come up after to say, 'Where did you get those liberal talking points?'" Moore said.

"When the pastor would say, 'I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ' ... The response would be, 'Yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak," he added. "When we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis."

Jesus was a progressive, hippie who kept the company of society’s undesirable and eschewed the status quo.

It's a little funny but it's been increasingly clear, right?

Many American protestants, in action, seem to embrace the Old Testament and wrinkle their noses and foreheads at the NT, whether they do so with a solid knowledge of scripture or not.

Abundantly clear. However this is the history of Christianity and religion in general …. It can be changed to whatever you want….

This isn’t remotely surprising to me and frankly I’m glad they’re openly saying it. Christianity flourishes and is most true to the teachings of Jesus when it’s working from the margins taking care of the “widows and orphans” of its age out of love….it becomes something ugly when it perched on power and cares more about its own members than it does the rest of humanity.

This whole "turn the other cheek" has lost favor with SCWs around 50-60 years ago.

I mean, when missionaries brought Christianity to South America you got all sorts of syncretism between the old Incan/Mayan faith and the new.

I think a lot of these people aproach their conservatism with a absolutist faith and fervor that would make Jim Jones blush, so it seems totally normal for a synchretic mixing of the two religious faiths to occur.

    Jesus was a Capricorn
    He ate organic food
He believed in love and peace
    And never wore no shoes

    Long hair, beard and sandals
And a funky bunch of friends
Reckon may just nail Him up
    If He come down again

'Cause everybody's gotta have somebody to look down on
Prove they can be better than at any time they please
Someone doin' somethin' dirty, decent folks can frown on
You can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me

This Alternative Jesus phenomenon is so strange. I thought these devout Christians would never reject tradition and the word of God. It seems that some of them are aware but simply refuse to accept the "biblical truth", opting instead for an alternate version. I do wonder how widespread this is within the Trump right.

Christianity Today Editor: Evangelicals Call Jesus “Liberal” and “Weak” | The New Republic

The editor in chief of Christianity Today is warning that evangelical Christianity is moving too far to the right, to the point that even Jesus’s teachings are considered “weak” now.

Russell Moore resigned from the Southern Baptist Convention in 2021, after years of being at odds with other evangelical leaders. Specifically, Moore openly criticized Donald Trump, whom many evangelical Christians embraced. Moore also criticized the Southern Baptist Convention’s response to a sexual abuse crisis and increasing tolerance for white nationalism in the community.

Moore told NPR in an interview released Tuesday that multiple pastors had told him they would quote the Sermon on the Mount, specifically the part that says to “turn the other cheek,” when preaching. Someone would come up after the service and ask, “Where did you get those liberal talking points?”

“What was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, ‘I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would not be, ‘I apologize.’ The response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak,’” Moore said. “When we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we’re in a crisis.”

Gotta say I haven't seen this in my church experience. Current church isn't as conservative as the old one, though. I can't imagine even the old church suddenly forgetting about or discounting the inerrancy of the Bible. But I do know that in churches, pastors always catch flak from this or that crank in the congregation. I think pastors' experience of the congregation is very different from a congregant's.

We go to a mainline Anglican church so we are not part of this subculture, but we have plenty of family who are. A lot of them grew up with the "warrior Jesus" crap of the mid 2000s that specifically rejected a "meek" and "humble" Christ. It's poisonous stuff.

My church is struggling with this. The pastor tries to be a bit more inclusive in his message, but the church itself recently switched from being a United Methodist church to the newish Global Methodist because they wanted to be more conservative. Since we are in the very conservative Montgomery county, its not a surprise, and we helped start this new campus, but one of my close friends is struggling with the change. And I do tune out when guest pastors or fellow church members drop a politics topic into their sermon or conversations.

I just posted a story in another thread about how Ultra Orthodox groups in Israel are pushing more things like segregation by sex in public and the greater use of Rabbinical Courts. That should be a warning sign to the dangers of tying narrow religious interpretation to Rightwing political movements who are interested in concentrating power.
