What a load of nonsense. Man was forcing heavy mins on vets and still getting a$$ blasted. Man just sucked at coaching.
he never had a top 100 player in his tenure, winning isn't possible. I thought last year for the talent we had, the team was reasonably solid
@SamFisher Do you actually believe people who have a positive outlook on Green and say positive things about him think he's already a star level player and played like one in his second year? Because the way you jump into these conversations of people praising Green, it seems like that's what you think our perception of Green is and attack that perception.
I mean those vets were dudes who had their careers derailed by injury and are now 11th and 12th men plus Christian Wood. I would say this team was tanking when the WOW factor was our core. So yes they were tanking. Remember that year was the year where if we fell out of the top 4 pick we lose it. So it was in their best interest to tank that season.
Yes. Playing vets heavy minutes is tanking. Playing younger players shorter minutes also prevents injuries
The point of tanking is playing the young guys to develop them while you lose games because they're still not good enough. There are no excuses for Silas. We wanted to lose, but he wasted two seasons worth of development for our players.
Because he HAD to, which is another thing people don't seem to understand. I'm not saying the man is a good coach (we really don't know how good he can be because the Rockets tanked) but if you sit vets who were promised minutes you run into problems with their agents who represent other players. Many Rocket fans only see in 2D. The Rockets have spent the last few years trying to repair relationships. Don't forget, even though it was Morey's fault, they f***** the whole league with one tweet. Many players lost endorsements in China. The NBA as a whole lost a **** ton of money. Of course vets played and still lost. They were supposed to lose. Majority or all of the vets were shipped to contenders. Rockets sacrificed better deals to make sure players (including KMJ because of his dad) went to a good situation. If vets sit they can't show other teams they're healthy and can contribute. The Rockets were the youngest team in the NBA, full of immature players. This is why Kenyon Martin didn't want his son playing for the Rockets. This is a tough situation for any coach to deal with. Silas wasn't good at managing locker room and off court issues. When I saw how much he smiled I knew he'd get run over. But he was micromanaged by management and forced to do what they wanted him to do on the court. He did what he came to do and was never meant to be here long-term. The Rockets have multiple potential franchise players because he "sucked at coaching." Three players who could have arguibly been #1 picks. Y'all should just be happy and thank the man. The Rockets have a very bright future ahead of them.
Generally agree here. Silas at the end of the day was assigned to a situation he isn't suited for. He is the type of head coach who could be the head coach of the Lakers. Probably could install a decent offensive system and have the vets like LeBron and AD buy in and execute it well. But what he isn't is a strict teacher type coach for young players. He's too introverted to humble a bunch of 20 year olds who've been the top dog alpha at every point of their basketball lives until they joined the NBA. Ime is the perfect type of coach of the type of roster the Rockets had the past 2 seasons. Too bad we got him 2 years late. But late is better than never.
If you can’t teach and develop and can only be mildly successful with all time talent; you aren’t a good coach. Great guy but he isn’t a good coach
Maybe. He might be just a really good assistant coach at the end of the day and nothing more. Assistant coaches don't need to command the room like a head coach and Silas is fine when he doesn't have to command a room.
It's crazy to me how many people just accept the idea that coaches and even players cooperate with tanking. Just because the org wanted to get high picks doesn't mean that Silas was being bad at his job on purpose.
I think this is in the wrong thread, but whatever. No, I do not think that. I honestly don't think anything new that I haven't thought 4 months ago the last time he played in an NBA game - which is why I haven't spent THAT much time thinking about it recently. In general I do not like the whole genre of "here's a bunch of random stats dredged up with no context in a tweet -> PATH TO GREATNESS CONFIRMED" but that's not really endemic to Jalen Green or the Rockets, it just seems to be a thing people do on twitter now a lot, which i guess makes the death of twitter a good thing.
You don't have to be bad, you just focus on some things less and let players mistakes go. More importantly the players just care less. They know we're tanking like everyone else. It's like a company where the CEO says you don't have to make money and no one gets fired for losing money. There are no coaches who are going to fully motivate those guys. Also to some extent you don't have a choice. If KPJ for example gives up on a play tour alternative is Nix. That's just f*cked. The players who were making mistakes knew it too. Further when you have SO many pieces that are guaranteed to make mistakes, it's impossible to orchestrate things without someone screwing some part of it up. KPJ could be having the game of his life but the opponent is leaving Jabari wide open and Jabari is having rookie confidence issues. Now you have to go be a therapist to Jabari but by next game KPJ is having an inconsistent night. So it's not like the coach is trying to lose, he just starts focusing on more and more microscopic improvements. Take any wins he can. It's just an odd situation to know your boss is more likely to fire you if you win. Gives birth to some weird states of being. Silas certainly sucked at developing 9 kids simultaneously without increasing wins but I bet over 2/3rds of NBA coaches would too. Silas could very well be a decent coach for veterans and we never would have known it.
Yes. Playing vets heavy minutes is tanking. Playing younger players shorter minutes also prevents injuries You're clearly incompetent. Playing our young guys big minutes risking injuries defeats the purpose of developing them lol. If your plan is to tank, why play Jalen 40 minutes in games you don't want to win. Silas was a scapegoat & he knew he was. When we won the organization would mysteriously sit guys out. It was lose lose
I love Jalen but playing him 40 minutes in his rookie year did help tanking lol. He was saying 19 year old NBA starter. Very few 19 year old starters are positive impact players.
Unfortunately the experiment kind of died since we added FVV and well, Dillon Brooks, but it would've been interesting to see what Ime could do with a similar, albeit with 1 year of additional experience, team. I'm on the fence about Silas. I don't know what's going on inside the org, but when you keep putting Nix in over, well... anybody, something is up, and I refuse to believe that was just Silas' doing. I can't prove anything, obviously, so I sit on the sidelines of the debate. There was also a point in his tenure where he went from damn-near having a stroke and crying after losses to looking like he was drugged and smiling after every one of them saying "it's cool... this is the way". And we all know that John Wall, for the most part, kept silent while he was exiled, but there was that one video where he just came out and said the organization was tanking. Even Kenyon Martin hinted they were tanking on a podcast without saying so, if I recall correctly. I agree that most players, especially possible stars, don't want to tank, but you may be able to set up a situation where winning would be somewhat difficult. lol. Dumbass Mavs were exposed by being blatant about it. The Spurs finally gave up "playing the right way" and started getting rid of most of their talent and began their own tank. Here's a video where Rashad McCants talks about it does happen and how it happened to him on the Timberwolves :
The difference between tanking and not tanking: If Jabari or Green were drafted this year instead of 2 years ago, they wouldn't be starters and probably get 15-25 minutes per game instead of 30+. They would be treated like Amen will be this year.
