The "pot of gold" system is the system the players want. I'm sure owners would be extremely amenable to a system with shorter and fixed maximum contracts with less team control, but the players have no interest in it. They would rather have stars be overpaid when they aren't good anymore than have young players compensated closer to their actual value.

Out in the real world, there's people who are working for corporations who invent something (a patent for example) that makes the company millions of dollars and the employee is making $125,000 and the company holds the rights to the patent. This employee is NOT making $720,000 a year and only working 8-9 months a year. Did he make Crane millions? Yes. Was he paid "peanuts"? Absolutely not. Look at Jon Singleton. Stros took a gamble and signed him for TEN million. Didn't pan out. Total bust and for every few that do make it the reality is that the overwhelming majority do not make it and the few that do make it to the big leagues the first yr they're going to make $720,000 and it goes up the next 2-3 yrs if they don't bust (which most do) and if they get to the ARB yrs they're making millions. So don't shed any tears for Correa because his life is changed forever even if he didn't sign for anything after hitting FA. Go to spotrac and look at the Astros total spending and see how much Crane is spending (over TWO HUNDRED MILLION). Sure there's players who reached the point of FA and made out quite well but the majority of them don't really pan out but that's the game everyone signed up for called Risk vs Reward and there's no guarantee.

JD Davis (84th) and Jake Rogers (90th) are the only former Astros among the top 100 in MLB in position player fwar. Gerrit Cole (10), Joe Musgrove (32), Patrick Sandoval (38), Charlie Morton (57), and Josh Hader (71) are among the top 100 pitchers.
Davis being a meaningful player is absolutely shocking to me. I thought he'd be out of the big leagues by now.
I expected him to hang around awhile as a bench bat, so he has been better than I expected. Hader and Nottingham were the only 2 players that Houston has traded that I really expected to be star players. A bunch more guys I thought wouldn’t be stars but would be decent (Phillips, Santana, Franklin Perez, Daz Cameron, Feliz, Appel, a few others) ended up busting and a few guys (Teoscar, Musgrove, maybe a couple others) ended up being decent when I didn’t expect anything from them. I hated the Sandoval trade because I just didn’t think Maldy was very valuable and I really liked Sandoval, but I wouldn’t have bet on Sandoval becoming one of the 50 most valuable SP in the league this season.
Chas wasn't hurt - he was hurt Thursday. He was on the bench because Dubon in CF helps keep the other team from taking extra bases, which is reasonable. But he is not the CF either Chas or Meyers is and does not catch all the same balls. Proved that, didn't he. Dusty is going to get him hurt putting him out there with a fly ball pitcher on the mound.

There isn't anyone on the Yankees I feel sorry for. And I will add that that team deserves all that they are getting. The blank look is to be expected considering their last place position in the standings.
