3 for 29, all against RHP 3 BB and 11K Hoping for the best, but the dude has always hit in AAA and has never hit in the big leagues If he is used as a power bat off the bench when we really need a HR or something, fine Taking ABs away from Diaz would be awful
This Singleton stuff had me thinking about a similar, I think slightly better player we had last year JJ Matijevic. Looking at his OPS this year it’s around .750 in AAA, he’s having a significantly worse season than the past few years, wonder if it’s lost confidence from not sticking it with the club last year.
Yeah this looks better in theory than in practice, like how Dana had three catchers on staff to begin the season to give Diaz more opportunities which didn’t really materialize. I think most likely Singleton will stink but that’s a risk worth taking with Abreu.
I really hope Singleton is used as a bat against RHPs in addition to Diaz, and not in lieu or DIaz. I also hope that removing Julks doesn't result in the Dubon in CF experience to have an even bigger revival with Julks not on the roster.
I doubt Dusty plays him much, so at a minimum it prevents Dusty from playing Julks and that's a big plus. When Yordan plays LF and Diaz catches, give Singleton a start at DH.
Those stats with MIL are from this yr. He played in 11 straight games so it wasn't like he was playing sparingly. Yes small sample size but like beard said Singleton has struggled to hit major league pitching over his career. He's going to get another opportunity. Hopefully he can step up but his playing time will be VERY limited.
I assume it’s Singleton but could it maybe be Brantley ? He’s been “close” for about 5 months it seems …. I don’t know what to believe anymore !
No I meant when he was with us years ago. I remember he had an issue with the hippie lettuce and that was rumored to be the main reason he couldn’t get over the hump. I do see the milwaukee stats from this year and I think the sample is indeed too small.
Yes earlier in his career he had issues with the whacky tobaccy. I think he was suspended three different times?
I am just happy they are doing something to improve this team vs RHP. I have been complaining about it all year. I wish they had brought in a legitimate MLB bat before the deadline, but wishing doesn't help. Singleton may help though I don't really have much confidence. Just hope. 1) Chas now should play nearly everyday 2) Dusty has a true 1B to use as a backup for Abreu and give him more days off. 3) The bench is more balanced and has an actual power threat vs RH leverage bullpen pitchers.
In Milwaukee he was slightly worse than what Abreu has done since Altuve/Alvarez have been back. Abreu: 10 games, 6-37, 6R, 5 RBI, 2HR, .162 avg, .568 ops Singleton 11 games, 3-29, 3R, 2 RBI, 0HR, .103 avg, .325 ops.
The Astros have been working out Diaz in the outfield FWIW.......... that is on top of the other 10 things they are working with him on each day. Also apparently Maldonado is doing the advanced preparation and helping Diaz. So maybe we will finally see more Diaz.
Diaz in the outfield …. Why ? We have Tucker Chas Myers and Alvarez …Dubon… all more capable . Why not just double down on catching
I can only guess why.... and that is that Maldonado is going to be catching at least the Astros top 3 starters in the playoff.... but the Astros want Diaz' bat in the line up. His bat is better than Myers or Dubon - and if Chas is in center, and Alvarez is at DH, then Diaz is an option in LF. I have to admit that plugging Diaz in the line up over Myers is a big difference. Altuve Pena Bregman Alvarez Tucker Abreu McCormick Diaz Maldonado That line up with Diaz in it is a lot more nasty than Myers. Also, it is possible they are working him out there to see if it is even feasible and they may conclude it isn't. I remember they tried Alvarez and Brantley at 1st before deciding it isn't possible.
