****ing Stevie Cohen dropping $90 mil on 3 prospects after Scherzer and Verlander failing to launch is so perfectly Mets
A sure fire way to rebuild is to suck for a few years and draft several top prospects. A faster way is to break the bank in the off season for players only to trade them away for prospects who you already see are developing in the minor leagues. Mets actually seem like they had a plan of going for broke but had this as a fail safe if it didn't materialize. Pads will do the same by next year.
The Astros are going to start having roster issues. Next year they will have: Verlander/Valdez/Javier/McCullers/France/Brown/Urquidy/Garcia and Arrighetti likely competing for a rotation spot, and possibly Gordon. That is 8 for sure big league starters and two others that will be ready or close to ready. In the pen they will have Pressly, Graveman, Abreu, Montero, Martinez, Blanco, Dubin. Stanek, Maton and Neris are free agents. Diaz, Abreu, Altuve, Pena, Bregman, Tucker, McCormick, Alvarez, Dubon, Meyers, Julks all are under contract. That is 26 players not counting Arrighetti and Dubon - or players in the minors that need to be called or traded, like Pedro Leon. For 2024 the Astros are in very good shape
I'm not sure if pressure is the right word, but the Astros roster right now allows Brown to focus FO on relievers and a bat without having to worry about opportunity cost at other positions.
Can we really use 'for sure' and McCullers in the same sentence? Hopefully the other guys stay healthy and anything LMJ has to offer is just a bonus.
we have some options to trade to help restock the minors or get more offensive help. Garcia Urquidy McCullers could each/all be traded for prospects or a nice bat . Pitching > hitting in terms of value . I feel a little better - we will have so much quality pitching depth next year
In fairness to the Mets - they did add some solid prospects, especially by a lame duck GM. They added from the Astros and Rangers a total of 3 guys that will be top 100 prospects to open the year next year, with Acuna possibly being a top 25 prospect. The Brewers sent them Justin Jarvis as well, who is a solid prospect- and Marco Vargas has a very high ceiling. So at the end of the day they added to their farm system: Acuna Gilbert Clifford Vargas Jarvis The lost all guys they just signed as free agents.
I would like to see them land one more arm and another bat if they can. I don't want to see Corey Julks hit again....
Defintely agree. Cohen is using money to buy prospects. I would be unhappy with how the season went if I was a Mets fan, but this is a great pivot for the Mets. Surplus value doesn't matter to Cohen.
