Might not be a bad idea to mildly overpay for a Rich Hill type right now so they can just wait out this Verlander situation.
"The Newark Bears Independent League team is also in on Verlander according to Heyman." "The Oakland Athletics are kicking the tires on Verlander according to Heyman." "The Detroit Grays of the Negro League have discussed a trade centered around Cool Papa Bell going to the Mets for Justin Verlander according to Heyman."
Why is it interesting Jon? The Padres have traded for and spent a lot of money to win now - seems to me that the GM would do everything possible to save his neck and win now.... especially when he sees that the Astros have not offered the players that the Mets want. Maybe in Jon Heyman's world logic doesn't apply.
The problem with that statement is I'm not convinced he has the potential to be a plus bat. He will probably always have hot streaks, but his overall numbers will likely be mediocre. His hit tool was always questioned since he was first drafted. Now because of his speed and defense, he will still likely be a 4 WAR player. He just simply is most likely the 7th or 8th best hitter on a winning team. That is great if you have bats around him, but certainly not an Untouchable type of player.
Apparently Twins might consider trading Gray or Maeda. Both rentals but Twins are 1st(1 game lead)in their division so want something that'll help them. No idea what their needs are. Severino but he's been awful. Can Astros fix him.
Again, this is just an opinion, but if Verlander has waived the no trade to them . . . any of these teams would have closed a deal by now.
Problem is... with San Diego JV would be trading one problematic place for another. The Pads are out of the playoffs by a ton right now so there's one lost season, and no guarantee the Pads won't try to have a fire sale soon. With the Astros and Dodgers you know they will stay relevant and in the hunt for the next few years.
Including Brown in a deal for Verlander probably still leaves the Astros a better team this year and maybe a wash next year. This year the Astros need arms who can eat as many innings as possible and I think Verlander is more likely to do that the rest of the year. If McCullers and Garcia return next year, I don’t think a rotation of Verlander, Valdez, Javier, Garcia, and Urquidy is worse than swapping Brown for Verlander. It’s the years after 2024 where the Astros are much worse off given they’ll need to do something to extend or replace Bregman, Altuve, Valdez, and Tucker. Overall, as a fan I’d prefer keeping Brown if that is the price for Verlander. The only thing I was bummed about the off-season was not signing Verlander given they didn’t extend Tucker. I totally get why Crane didn’t do it (I probably wouldn’t have if I was him), but as a fan it clearly made the team better, I didn’t see it creating any long term issues, and I don’t really care about Crane saving money during a prime championship window.
Oh shut the **** up. I'm having fun. I really don't give a **** if you are enjoying my posts lmao. Be a MAN and spell out piss too.
According to my sources nothing has happened yet and may not happen in the future...on the other hand something may happen, but my sources as of now have stated that it has not...but it might...
LOL… there was a time when somebody may have been fully on the “inside” and connected… but in today’s world where everybody and their mom has a twitter account, you can see how FOS some of these guys always have been/were.
