So I heard Brown RAN into the clubhouse this morning BOASTING HELLA LOUD, "I got JV! I got JV! I'm DA ****ING GOAT!!!". Turns out when Brown showed the locker room the transaction wire, it was John Valentin, aged 56 years old. A SCRUB player that last played IN 2002. Boy the players had a RAUCOUS laugh at Brown after that and told him to and I QUOTE,"Stop ****in wasting our time pissed TROUSERS boy. Bring back someone TWICE the man you were (Luhnow) ".

we don’t have the farm system many teams have. 2 years of no 1/2 draft picks hurt.
we are dead last in farm system rankings.

Getting JV and Hader would be optimal.

I would be happy with Lorenzen and Hader. That would give them a fighting chance at another championship.

Something would have to drastically change for the Astros to all of a sudden offer Gilbert in a deal for Barlow and Hernandez.

Based on their dealings with the Mets, I would think that Gilbert/Clifford/Baez/Dezenzo would be off the table. Dezenzo is someone the Astros are very high on right now.

    May -- 4.80
    June -- 3.33
    July -- 1.69

Those are JV's ERA per month. He started slowly after a minor injury and has progressed to dominant again. Mets don't appear to have a 5-man rotation, but with Houston it might equal a 6-man (and maybe after Urquidy 1-2 multi-inning guys who could relieve starters after ~90 pitches some games). I would prefer limiting the stress on most our starters arms. The ripple effect with an additional very good starter (JV) is added would have an awesome effect throughout the entire staff.

It will be interesting to see 3-5 years from now how those 4 guys pan out. I am high on those 4 guys (plus Barber and Loperfido) too and I’m totally in favor of having a weak deadline rather than give away future stars. Hopefully their stubbornness bodes well for at least a couple of those guys becoming star level players.

The situations are not remotely equal. The Rangers haven't been competitive - and, in fact, have been very bad - for years. So, unlike the Astros, they don't have 6+ years of deadline deals depleting their system nor do they have years of drafting late in rounds. Additionally, they didn't have four premium draft picks taken from them for cheating.

The Rangers' farm is stocked and, consequently, they are infinitely better positioned to make deals. But I'd ask which you think is better: an unprecedented, uninterrupted run of premium success.... or a few trades at the 2023 deadline?

I mean, let's all agree to not lose our minds because we want the Astros to make some trades.

    • Could Verlander be headed to L.A.? The Dodgers have been engaged with the Mets on the potential of landing Justin Verlander, sources have told ESPN. But the prospect of pulling something off has seemed unlikely given the nature of Verlander's 2025 option, which automatically vests with 140 innings in 2024. If he hits that number, the acquiring team would be on the hook for somewhere in the neighborhood of $92 million for two-plus seasons of Verlander, who will be 41 in February.

But the machinations of the Max Scherzer trade made this interesting. In it, the Mets paid down all but $22.5 million of Scherzer's remaining salary in order to acquire a premier prospect in Luisangel Acuna, the brother of Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. The younger Acuna is now the Mets' second-best prospect, according to MLB.com.

Each of the Mets' top five prospects is a position player. What they need are pitchers, and the Dodgers have plenty of those. The question is whether they're willing to give up the ones who would prompt the Mets to pay down enough of Verlander's remaining salary to make both sides comfortable.

It'd be a complex scenario, potentially made even more difficult by Verlander's no-trade clause. If Blake Snell and Marcus Stroman are off the table, and Logan Gilbert isn't really available, Verlander -- and potentially Eduardo Rodriguez -- could be the last high-ceiling starting pitcher remaining. The Dodgers aren't expected to add another starter if he isn't of that caliber. -- Alden Gonzalez

    • Padres' sweep helps clear their murky deadline decisions: Have the Padres' players convinced their front office to keep them together? Word throughout the industry as of Friday was that Padres GM AJ Preller still hadn't decided whether to trade Blake Snell and Josh Hader and essentially punt on the 2023 season; he and his lieutenants wanted to wait and see how the weekend played out before making a decision on Monday, the last full day before the trade deadline.

Well -- the Padres swept the first-place Rangers, outscoring them 16-4 in the process.

The Padres are still two games under .500 and eight games out of first place, and they have yet to win more than three consecutive games all season. But they also have a plus-63 run differential, have been the best defensive team in baseball based on outs above average, and one could make the case that they've been generally unlucky, going 0-9 in extra-inning games and 6-17 in one-run games and posting only a .706 OPS with runners in scoring position. In other words, they're not quite the Mets.

At this point, it will probably take a lot to pry Snell and Hader from the Padres (especially Snell). -- Alden Gonzalez

One thing I've learned is that the rest of the league is trying to make crazy trades right now to sniff what the Astros already have.

Astros will only make a significant trade if it makes sense for next year

"Take the pressure off of Brown and Javier to go thru the lineup more than once in the playoffs"?

Even with a deeper pen what you're saying here is they'd be good with Brown + Javier giving them 3 innings in the playoffs? That's going thru the lineup one time clean (possibly just 2 innings if anyone gets on base the first two innings). I would hope they could get deeper than that (at least 5 IP). I understand possibly having someone like Urquidy coming in after them and giving them 2-3 IP to ultimately turn it over to the pen but if even with a deep pen they need Javier give them at least 5 IP. Hope that Brown could as well (go 5 IP) but understand it would be his first start in the playoffs which definitely brings pressure.

Just wanting to make sure I'm understanding you.

I don't see why there is so much hate for DB on this board.

You cant trade for a high end asset without giving back a top end prospect or 5.

Here are the options as I see them:
    • Hope and pray our lineup gets healthy and Javier and Valdez get the mojo back. As a GM you will get roasted.
    • Trade multiple assets for a rental/player with limited control. As a GM you will get roasted.
    • Get into an asset war for a splash trade. As a GM you will get roasted.
I'm glad I'm not Dana Brown.

i agree with the poster. we are currently at the peak of our window and hopefully stay generally near there for next couple years. gilbert is no sure thing, is of no real value to us the next couple years, and needs to be viewed vs the rest of the league's prospects. we have one of the worst, if not the worst, farms in baseball. Him being our #1 prospect is meaningless without context. The future of the franchise isn't in his hands.

All that aside, OF is our biggest farm strength anyway, and beyond that, if they desire, they can simply eliminate the need for any minor league OF's to be a key major league piece by simply paying Tucker.

Willingness to trade Gilbert should be a no-brainer, IMO. As they say, "prospects are just that...prospects". Francis Martes, Forrest Whitley, Korey Lee...those were all former system #1's recently. We held them, they barely saw the majors, and the best return for any of them was 1.5 years of a decent middle reliever.

The goal is to maximize world series chances. We aren't going to sustain this success indefinitely. Sports don't work like that.

    Basically I agree,

But they do need to add a quality starter and reliever.

I am not as down on the farm as the experts are. MLB only has Drew Gilbert in their top 100.
Those lists a lot of times are 30% pedigree and acclaim 30% age vs level and 40% actual good ball being played.

The rangers have this Owen White who I am unclear how in the world he is ranked top 50 as a RHP. He's not particularly young as he's about to turn 24. He's not really striking anyone out this year in AAA. Reminds me of Tim Redding in a way. There's no way I would trade Colton Gordon for him straight up even.

Jack Leiter is another good example. He's getting absolutely roasted down in AA. If he was a 3rd round pick he wouldn't even be top 20 for the Rangers but they have him in the top 100.

Reminds me of the old days when the Rangers had Mike olt, Cody Buckel and Jurickson Profar giving them the number one system.

They gave up their best prospect in Acuna.

    This is sort of true.

It isn't 4 players that teams want - there are more than that, but it is true that the Astros are not interesting in dealing Gilbert for a middling starter or reliever. The Astros want players that are good and on contract beyond this season for players like Gilbert. Teams like the Rangers are not as concerned about their farm system.

Good luck with that - there is a good chance the Astros won't end up with a player as good as either of these guys.

Astros don't have the worst farm system - they have an average farm system that has most of it's best prospects in the lower minors.

The issue is that the Dodgers have a better farm system and have more players in AA and AAA ready to produce than the Astros that they can trade.

True, but the reverse is true as well. Imagine if we traded Tucker, Bregman or Correa for a rental?

It's not the players we held onto that didn't pan out that kills a franchise, but the players we trade away that become all-stars.

Teams will always pay for potential and overpay for desperation

Other teams have better prospects than Gilbert. Dodgers have pitching prospects.
Luisangel Acuña is ranked #44 in top 100 prospects.
    That got Rangers Scherzer.
We have Drew Gilbert… solid player but other teams have better.
