Maybe not signing him was a blessing in disguise? Was Neris his replacement? Neris was solid in the regular season as well in the playoffs. Maybe Astros don't win the World Series if Graveman was on the team and Neris went elsewhere.
The brass has to believe they can get him back on track to take on his salary and send out a prospect. We desperately need another reliable pen arm because our top guys are getting run into the ground right now. Part of that is bad luck because we're playing an inordinate amount of close games. The team clearly did not like Lee as a receiver. I've given up on trying to figure out how they measure these things here, but whatever method they use he failed. He wasn't producing enough offense to overcome that.
Should've resigned Kendall Graveman and lost a 1st round pick to retrade for Graveman. This really is ridiculous. Justin Verlander should've been resigned and looks like the Rangers have the better offer ready to trade, but Justin has a NTC. Astros best offer could be Pedro Leon, Jake Myers The whole situation is ridiculous because Jim Crane doesn't pay up.
I have been an Astros fan for 45 years, and I know most of you have been long time fans as well, some maybe even longer than me. I remember absolute joy making the playoffs for the first time. I remember suffering through years of 100 loss seasons. I remember the team unwilling to spend money because of bad ownership situations. I remember an owner refusing to resign Nolan Ryan despite him wanting to be here and having reasonable contract wishes. And I remember the team gutted of our favorite players multiple times and having to learn complete new players. Many of you do too. Jim Crane has built and kept a contending team for us to root for and enjoy. He brought a World Series title after 55 long suffering years, and another 5 years later. I am very thankful to Jim Crane and hope he just keeps doing what he is doing because I get to watch the Astros win in the playoffs every year and that every few years in the World Series. Best owner the Astros have ever had or could ask for. Some of you forget and don't appreciate.
Graveman WANTED to re-sign with the Astros but Click wouldn’t give him a third year. So, he wanted to be an Astro. Second, Graveman pitched behind an atrocious defense on a team with a terrible clubhouse and out of the race by May. He should pitch better for the Astros and while he doesn’t quite have the same stuff as a few years ago, it is still good.
This is sarcasm, right? Jim Crane doesn’t overpay. Not paying $40 million+ per for multiple years of a 40-yr old pitcher doesn’t make an owner cheap. Didn’t overpay Correa and Springer either…then won another World Series. Calling him cheap is simply ridiculous.
I'd guess Crane is easily in the upper third in profits among MLB owners as the Astros get the most bang for their buck usually.
Paying market rate for a guy who’s still very much above average, and not locked into a 10+ year deal, is what Crane has been shown to do.

Spending mostly on cost efficient players is basically the definition of cheap in regards to MLB owners. Montero, Abreu, and LMJ are probably the only contracts that aren't cheap. Being cheap is fine. It is a competitive advantage getting the best bang for the buck.

Everyone was playing horrible at that point and most of them were injured.
What does Graveman not signing after the 2021 season have to do with signing Montero and Abreu prior to the 2023 seadon?
I'm pretty sure if the Astros had Graveman under contract this offseason, they would not have signed Montero to that deal. Maybe they get him at a lower cost, but that deal was made for the sole purpose of locking up Montero so the Astros had 4 guys likely of being high leverage relievers in 2023.
Even if Montero had performed as well as he did in 2022? Wouldn't it have been more likely that they would not have signed Neris prior to 2022?
Doubtful as Montero sucked in 2021. Edit: Neris would not have been estimated to be the 5th high leverage reliever, but I should probably say maybe instead of doubtful as there is just a lot that has happened. Though without Neris, there is no guarantee the Astros win the World Series. Not sure Montero is re-signed without the World Series victory.
