To me the equivalent of an Astros-Verlander trade would be Mets get only Drew Gilbert and cover $30M+ of Verlander’s remaining guaranteed money. Which I would be thrilled with.
Wow Mets..talk about not understanding leverage. Easily could have gotten another prospect or two as well. Unless of course Scherzer forced their hand.
There’s 3 teams at most that Scherzer or JV were/are going to waive their NTCs. They aren’t going to trade them to Atlanta so that leaves Houston, Texas and LAD as the only teams IMO. No way they would accept a deal to any team in the centrals, Baltimore, or the Rays.
If the Angels over paid for Giolito and the Rangers got a good deal, what will the market be for guys like Stroman, Montgomery, and the other pitchers. You think Brown can get a starter without over paying?
If Verlander is snatched without major assets going out, it basically offsets one punishment year of the lost draftees.
Scherzer simply isn't that stellar anymore. Maybe he magically turns it around in Texas but every indicator is he won't and he is an injury risk with the season he's had so far.
Jv has got to want out. His buddy just got traded, the Mets are a mess, and met fans have been booing him.
The Dodgers and Blue Jays would be my guess. But really I think it’s either Houston or they keep him.
Mets had choice from group of prospects, some rated higher than Acuna, including pitching - Mets wanted Acuna. Some think he will be really good - some scouts think he is D. DeShields Jr. …. Time will tell. A lot of the issues with the Verlander option can be off set by them taking Montero or McCullers. Astros also talking to the Tigers about Rodriguez.
