Apparently this Acuña prospect is legit — joins his brother in the NL East. ARL could end up really regretting this deal. Max has struggled a bit this year — most HRs per AB in his career ever, and just turned 39…but a move ARL had to make. This tells me that JV would not live in Arlington and they wanted to not miss on TOR arms.
Some baseball people really like him. He is 21 years old and repeating AA. He lost 18 months of development because of COVID. He has blazing speed, doesn’t strike out much and hits for average. Lots of doubles but limited power and some issues with his glove sometimes. Sounds like this is the player the Mets targeted. There were other players being discussed, mostly pitchers… but this is who they wanted and wanted them enough to pay down Scherzer’s contract.
These are just my personal opinions. I think Verlander was happy staying in NY 24 hours ago. Now I don’t know. I question whether he is still happy after losing Scherzer unless Verlander already knew Scherzer was going to opt out anyway. Verlander is not going to want to play musical chairs with a young family but he doesn’t want to rebuild either. I think most likely Verlander stays in NY but there is a 20% chance he ends up in Houston for a prospect like Gilbert with Montero going to NY.
I know some on twitter are saying how landing Mad Max doesn't help their bullpen but i disagree. If everyone is healthy, the Rangers can move two starters to the pen come playoff time.
I know there’s a lot of downside for Scherzer’s option which basically makes him a rental with a potential albatross, but I feel like the Rangers got a great deal. Acuna is not THAT much better than Korey Lee.
I think Ronald even said his brother could be better than him but it might be just hyping up his brother like Steph did with Seth
