yep. Jaygup was good cutter, Tari and Tate are decent too. Cam looks absolutely great as a cutter. When you have a big who is a willing and natural passer, you need cutters around him. Adelman offense was based on hard cuts and looked like a masterpiece. I think with Sengun you have the potential to be even better in that regard than Divac/Weber or Yao/Scola. The thing is you have to commit to a system and forge an identity. are we going to be a Senhub team? or off-the-bounce perimeter creation team with Jalen/KPJ/FVV?
I mean that's really not some either or thing. It's not how an offensive system is implemented. An offense reads and reacts. So the base offensive can be centered around a guard and Sengun or Jabari pnr 2 man game between one of the guard creators. So it could be Green and Sengun or Jabari pnr and from that base set based on how the defense is reacting,, it either turns into a roll at the rim, drive at the rim by the guard or high or mid post action for Sengun or Jabari where they can do their thing from there. You go through actions and based on defensive reaction you chose if you want to hit the roll man or the roll man pops instead and uses their mid post game. For Jabari that would be his mid post fadeaway game and for Sengun it would be utilizing his playmaking. It's a progression of reads. It's not either or. Like it's not going to be either Sengun dominates all playamking turning Green or FVV into off ball players or Jalen and FVV being heliocentric ball dominant dudes turning Sengun into a glorified roll man. That would be a waste of talent for both sides.
The big issue is do we want our guards to cook against coverage on numerous possessions or do we want to get a layup via Senhub. That’s the big question. I mentioned Adelman, and his masterpiece offense, where you had klutz-es like Doug Christie run uncontested lay-up drills. We may have something similar with Senhub. But what we have seen a lot is the guards only use the pick to get a switch and cook against the switched defender, or very often there is no pick at all, or they waive the pick, or only use it as a decoy… None of our three guards are good enough for this to be an elite offense, the way it was with Harden. So the question is: do you commit to Senhub or do you keep waiting for KPJ and Green to become elite off the bounce.
Any issue of waiving screens away is a issue resolved by coaching. Do you think even the Nuggets operate the way you think the Rockets should operate? You think Murray is some pure off ball player who just hovers around Jokic posts? ..no, in fact they do similar actions out of the pnr. Murray literally scores the same percentage of his fgs unassisted as Green last season(around 60%). An initial pnr doesn't have to be a play that ends up beings guard doing all the work. From that action a Jabari or Sengun mid post possession can form. Again its read and react. We aren't going to have an offense of a guard walking up and then dumping it off to Sengun. You have to one day realize this team has more than one talented player. If it's pure "Senhub" then are we just going to ignore we have two guys with absolutely elite dribble seperation (Amen and Green)? We just ignore they have those traits? Green is already showing positive signs as a good pnr ball handler. Amen will definitely be a good pnr ball handler. It's going to be a diversified offense.
Haven't seen this posted yet, apparently Silas only used Jabari in the offense in actual plays about 33% of the time he was on the court (P&Rs, DHOs, Pin-Downs, etc) Another damning indictment on Silas was almost never using Jabari in the Pick-&-Pop despite shooting fairly well from 3 in those actions.
some people on this website would say silly sh*t like "well Bari should hit his open shots." We all knew Bari is not a spot up shooter. Silas was so bad it makes me so angry. Everyone thinks the children suck because of how unimaginative he was in the offense. Hopefully Ime will unlock Bari by putting him is spots he is comfortable in.
I get the team was tanking, but that should have been an excuse to run absurd lineups and plays, not just parking everyone in a corner to get bailout passes from KPJ, Green, and Shrooder. If you're going to be awful, at least be creatively bad. Sengun and Garuba shared almost no time on the court, no reason to not unleash Jabari as the second coming of LMA, it took Silas forever to unleash Sengun as a facilitator, etc. Absolute basketball malpractice. You're given carte blanche and the best you can think of are KPJ Pick and Rolls with the obligatory Lob Threat™ replacing an already good roll man in Sengun? Edit: Look at this ****!
Relax. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that Silas being so bad gave us Jalen, Alpi, Jabari, Tari, Amen and Cam. When we win the title a few years from now, Silas should get an effin' ring.
For real. I don't know why people can't understand that Stone didn't want Silas to win. If he got creative and it looked good, the hammer would come down. We'd start sitting or waiving or trading players. If that didn't work, Stone would come to practice and dictate things. Was a brutal tanking regime. Most stats are not empty. Most stats lead to wins. I realized during the tanking years that most people just can't grasp that. There's no reality where everyone was used and maximized properly and we get the same lottery odds we did. The only possibility was the some slowed down development would take place and it did. Now I will say, Silas was so dumb about his career. As soon as Harden was out, he should have threatened to resign if he wasn't given a chance to coach AFTER tanking. Instead he both followed the instructions and got fired for it. The organization bought some fake goodwill from the fans by treating Silas like crap - which is why mainstream fans think this was all a big screw up by Silas. We discovered Silas certainly wasn't prepared to groom 9 kids simultaneously and all while the GM - who's obsessed with tanking - was dictating practices and rotations. The GM left him with KPJ and Nix as PG's - arguably the worst PG rotation in NBA history and I challenge you to find a worse one. He also left him with Sengun and Garuba as rim protectors, Gordon and KJ guarding the best wings in the NBA. Any coach or GM knows that team was doomed under these conditions. Our roster could not execute the plays that Green and Jabari needed off the ball even if they wanted to. Silas unintentionally took one for the team. Even if you replace Silas with a rookie coach that won a title - let's say Ty Lue - the results on the Rockets would have been the same or they would have resigned in protest. It was never going to be allowed for the team to win a few more games by executing better plays. That option was not on the table. Stone should be held accountable for this but the truth is that can't be done till we see the actual results this coming season. If he drafted really well, it will have been worth it. If not, fire him. That simple.
I agree. People on CF expect great coaching, all the players busting out and playing great but somehow the Rox still have a losing record? Where I disagree is Stone being held accountable. Would you rather be a mediocre team like when they tried to retain Wall, Wood and Oladipo? Tanking was the best option and Stone managed to get 7 good prospects in just 3 yrs. I think that's already a great job done, whether any of these guys break out is due to luck already imo.
The handle is just way, way better. Damn. If the growth he's been showing is legit and he continues on this trajectory... look out. He's starting to look a little, dare I say it, Tatum-esque.
Just wanted give a little love to our other other other franchise player. Speaking of… How are we going to keep all these franchise players?
Finally I've found posters that get it. Silas's losing was what we wanted. Winning was something we did not want, and unfortunately Silas sacrificed himself for the future of the team. Is he a bad coach? We don't know. But his tenure here shouldn't be a indictment on him as a coach
