We'll see what he evolves into, but we've seen this offense work fine with a QB like Schaub running it. One of the knocks early on with CJ was he wasn't fooling anyone with the zone read stuff since he rarely ever kept it. Would be great if he could incorporate some well-timed runs to compliment his arm to challenge defenses.

Stroud is not Michael Vick, he's more Dak Prescott with a better arm and better accuracy, which is ok. Prescott runs when he has to, which it seems Stroud will do the same. He showed me what I needed to see against Georgia.

Every QB has a flaw but if you can do a.little bit of everything and have an A+ arm....Im good

No one doubts Stroud has the arm skills. The guy can throw with the best of them. He has great touch and placement. The knock about Stroud has been hisb processing speed and playing under pressure. I don't get excited about Stroud's passes. I knew he would be able to sling the ball. I want to see how he does under pressure and off script

I would say neither quarterback won the day. I would go as far, as to stay with the combat sports scoring I have been talking about, to score it 9-9 for the quarterbacks on Friday. So, for those keeping track, it’s been 10-9 Stroud, 10-9 Stroud, and 9-9 on Friday. Mills was bad early and Stroud struggled towards the end of the practice.

C.J. Stroud had his worst throw of training camp on Friday. Now, it’s one throw. And if I could get another look I would bet it was tipped, but there wasn’t a replay. The ball fluttered like your friend who doesn’t play sports but is athletic threw the ball. It was wobbly and nothing like Stroud’s other passes and Eric Murray almost intercepted it. I say almost because an official standing there called it incomplete. Stroud holds onto the ball longer than Mills. It seems as though he’s trying to make the best play instead of the easiest play. It hasn’t synched up a lot for Stroud that the best play is the easiest play. That has led to a mixed bag through three days. Stroud missed high for Nico Collins with Steven Nelson in coverage. It just wasn’t the crispest day for the offense.

The easy play and best play synched up for C.J. Stroud when he hit Tank Dell in one of the team periods. The defense was bearing down on Stroud and he whipped the ball out to Tank Dell. Steven Nelson was there to defend Dell but he didn’t get anywhere near putting a hand on him. A nifty stop then cut saw Dell with plenty of real estate in front of him and Nelson searching for the wideout.

Speaking of escaping a defender C.J. Stroud had a nice moment with that. Defensive end Jerry Hughes looked to be headed towards a dominant sack but Stroud moved out of the rush lane. Then he took off for a good gain. Almost a first down.

The defense is ahead of the offense so far. DeMeco Ryans said after practice he wasn’t worried and in most training camps he has been a part of the defense started ahead and the offense caught up. Ryans said typically it doesn’t take the offense long to catch up after they get going. Jonathan Greenard had a rep where he would have demolished Davis Mills in a live rep. Thomas Booker had what would have been a tackle for no gain. Defensive lineman Byron Cowart almost flattened Mills and DeMeco Ryans jumped for joy as Cowart was headed to make the play before Mills quickly got rid of the ball for a short gain.

The stud on defense once again was Will Anderson. I can’t get enough of the Anderson reps. Early in practice, he was being blocked as the play developed and then hit a swim move that would have led to a sack. Then there were two plays almost back-to-back. My note was simply “51 OMG” on my notepad. Anderson initially fell for the play action, then he stopped, changed directions, and closed on Davis Mills like you see cheetahs close on prey on the nature channels. Shortly after Dalton Schultz felt Will Anderson's wrath as he blasted past the tight end for a tackle for a loss. He’s a stud.

Derek Stingley was locking down wideouts today. Stingley has looked good through the three days. Yes, he has allowed a catch. He’s not perfect. Friday Davis Mills tested him and it went poorly for Mills and his intended receiver Noah Brown. Stingley was all over Brown and Mills had to sail the ball to try to get the ball to Brown. Incomplete. Later, Derek Stingley, had the wideout covered so well that Mills had to get rid of it and just threw it to nobody.

Cornerback Tavierre Thomas had a nice day. Thomas knocked away a pass intended for Noah Brown. He’s quick too. It will be a good challenge for Tank Dell and John Metchie, who was off on Friday, going against Thomas in practice. Thomas has been one of the best slot corners in football for the past couple of seasons. He’s a tenacious defender and seems to understand his position well.

Man, Texans RB Dameon Pierce has even more dangerous scoots this year. He's sliding and gliding through holes quicker and with more burst even than last year, it seems. He noted after practice that he put a huge focus on getting his nutrition right and his workouts on point. The true test is when the pads go on, but I think he's going to pass that test with flying colors.

However, on the first running play, DL Maliek Collins ate it all up, wrapping up Pierce at the line of scrimmage. Yes, say it with me "THEY'RE NOT WEARING PADS!!", but they will on Sunday. That said, the interior guys have been a problem from the first snap of training camp and Collins was a major part of that issue, especially on this play to start that team drill.

When Pierce needs a rest, there's no drop off in the dangerous RB category. RB Devin Singletary 'Motor' is smooth as melted butter and he showed that on a run in the team drill as Pierce stepped out of the huddle. He took the handoff and started on a zone path to the left side, then without stopping, he darted back inside and froze a defender, all the while motoring past that concrete-footed defender. Singletary is so sudden that he can start with a plan where he's going to run, spy an opening elsewhere, stop on a dime and dart out the other way. Slick and so darn slippery.

A guy that I mentioned on Thursday made another stellar pass breakup in the next team drill. DB Tavierre Thomas was in man coverage on WR Noah Brown on a shallow crosser. QB C.J. Stroud got a blitz and he read it perfectly to get the ball to Brown as his hot receiver. Thomas got in Brown's hip pocket and knocked away the pass. Tav has been real active early in these practices.

The second team period was not a great one for the quarterbacks. Mills missed receivers early in his two throws, while Stroud missed on two of his three throws. Keenum then hit a checkdown for a completion. He then found rookie TE Jordan Murray out in the flat wide open, then he threw a dart to WR Jalen Camp on a man coverage combination route.

During the end of special teams, the returners decided to have some fun. They all attempted to catch and hold as many footballs as possible at one time. Desmond King II started it and caught three. The overall winner, though, was… Tank Dell. He had SIX. I don't know HOW on God's green earth he was able to catch six punts and hold them at the same time on that tiny frame. But he did! What stood out to me, mostly, was the fact that this was just a group of guys in the midst of a stressful training camp, smiling, competing and having fun.

The fans had a few moments to get excited about, but the one that seemed to trigger the most reaction was when QB C.J. Stroud threw a gem to TE Dalton Schultz on an over route. Stroud threw a laser shot to the right side of the formation and Schultz snagged it, without breaking stride, turned upfield and made a huge play out of it. The fans love having Stroud here, but they have big expectations for Schultz too. So, those two linking up got a serious rise out of the assembled fan base.

Two plays after Stroud made that play, he made an even more impressive throw. The defense brought a strong blitz against Stroud so the rookie QB had to get rid of it nearly as soon as he got the snap. But, he did and he found fellow rookie WR Tank Dell on the far side of the field before that rush could sack him. Dell turned that up the field and made a huge play out of it. Beating the blitz isn't a little thing…ever, so that win caught my attention in a big way.

On the next play, QB Davis Mills didn't beat the blitz because the defense didn't on that particular play. However, his quick thinking and quick reaction skills contributed to a key completion. He ran a bootleg again and had a DE in his face from jump, so when he turned around to start back toward the line of scrimmage, the DE was nearly at his feet, so he leapt in the air and fired to TE Eric Tomlinson for the reception. That was a sack 99.9% of the time or should've been, but Mills made the play right with a highly athletic play on the boot.

I mentioned the pass coverage skills and recognition of rookie LB Henry To'oTo'o early this week. He showed it again in the last team drill of the day. He first had to react to a possible run and then when he knew it was a pass, he "robot-ed" his way back to the nearest receiver. Robot (roll over and back) is a technique that linebackers use on play action or bootleg, reacting to the run and then changing course to roll over and back to cut off crossers. To'o To'o made a smooth and explosive move into Tank Dell's space and kept Mills from attempting a throw his way.
