No one should try to indoctrinate children with race based pride, I agree. Seems like a non-sequitur considering the topic.

If you agree then you'd be against this curriculum being pushed out by DeSantism.

The effort to portray whites as guiltless and in fact heroes in slavery and racial inequality. Living in Florida, I hear so much about how "we freed the slaves centuries ago" and "the civil war wasn't about slavery" - I'm sick of it frankly. This whole thing is just about kowtowing to the far right, helping them paint the narrative that allows them to feel good about themselves and blame black people for all the problems.

Okay, I genuinely was curious. Pride is often a loaded term.

    I agree with you.

it appears this discussion has moved on from the original starting point, but if anyone's interested in hearing a bit more from William Allen, fyi

Podcast: Special Edition with William B. Allen on Harris’s Demagoguery
    by Steven Hayward
    July 26, 2023

I knew when I saw news of Vice President Kamala Harris claiming that Florida’s new African-American history standards for public schools taught that “enslaved people benefitted from slavery,” I knew instinctively that this was a lie of unusual medacity even for her. Don’t take my word for it: read the curriculum guide for yourself, especially page six, where Harris and the rest of the race-obsessed educrat-complex twists one sentence in the most grotesque way imaginable.

The real sin of the curriculum guide, from the left’s demented point of view, actually can be seen page eight, where the curriculum mentions including the history of slavery before1619. Ah—there’s the rub. The real reason Harris attacks the Florida curriculum is that it dares to correct the distortions and omissions of the 1619 Project, which has become the platform for saying that America was, and is, purely a slavocracy, and that American capitalism practically invented slavery.

One of my principal teachers in graduate school (and a past guest on this podcast), William B. Allen, was one of the authors of the new Florida curriculum guide, and he’s been in high demand this week refuting the calumnies of our vice president. I managed to catch up with him this morning to note the obvious irony that the party of Calhoun would be reviving Calhounism just now, but trying to deflect it onto the other party. (Because of course the real reason for this attack is that Joe Biden might face Ron DeSantis as a candidate next year, so better start calling him a racist now.)

Listen here, or over at Ricochet as soon as the link goes live.

But overwhelmingly conservative. It’s not a coincidence that former slave states have been historically conservative.

Northern liberals were certainly racists and required national guard to desegregate…. But conservatives took it to another level.

And guess what…. Conservatives are trying to implement a religious Jim Crow now.

And previously DeSantis himself backed off of it but maybe now he feels compelled to defend it.

Again that people can’t acknowledge that the curriculum was poorly stated and any intent behind it was muddled because of “LEFTISTS!” Shows how partisan things are.

    @AroundTheWorld

Would you be fine with language like

"They learned skills in spite of the harsh conditions of slavery they were forced into by their masters"

If they framed it in a way to show how resilient they are sure but the wording in the curriculum makes it sound like the slave masters were the ones providing the opportunity
