Is the Astros pitching philosophy hard on arms?

    Obviously a lot of guys are hurt. Are Astros pitchers getting hurt at a higher rate than other teams, and is the high spin-rate philosophy to blame?

    “He’s never pitched a full season. He needs rest.”
    “Need to go to a 6-man rotation.”
    “They’re skipping his turn in the rotation for rest.”

    Pitching is inherently physically taxing on a human's arm. I wouldn't say the "Astros pitching philosophy" is "hard on arms," it's just that we've had a lot of injuries, plus our starters aren't going as deep, and as a result, every reliever has to get more innings.

    Phil would down a pint of Gin at the assisted living home before giving you an 8 inning 200 pitch outing and leave the game up 4-3, and be in bed in time for Barnaby Jones.

    God I miss those guys - now the league literally can break down every angle and keep and mark the balls to have scientists test them…. I loved the Gaylord Perry’s, Niekro’s, Charlie Hough… Rick Rueschel and Tommy John’s that threw the highway speed limit and had everything from Jeri curl relaxer to Teflon on the ball as it chugged to the plate.

    I vividly recall Orel Hershiser pitching complete games in the World Series, 120 or so pitches.

    30+ years ago, an average MLB pitcher FB sat in the low 90s. Now, MLB FBs sit 5+ mph faster.
