I took that article as Brown thinks the costs of trading for a ToR SP may require more value than they are worth. There are a lot of teams in the postseason hunt. I suspect the Astros targets per Brown are more on what he thinks they can acquire at a price he's willing to pay than on what he truly wants.

My original point was that a 6 man rotation taxes the BULLPEN more than a 5 man rotation does, and the bullpen is already burnt.

This was never about resting starters.

For you it wasn't. But for me it was. That's the whole point of a six man. But you do you. I'll do me. Go 'Stros.

    It's all good.

It appears we were just misunderstanding each other.

    Cheers. And go Astros.

I am assuming/hoping Brown is just trying to lower fan expectations and gain leverage with other GMs. Until the deadline passes I’m going to expect Houston to come out of this deadline having added at least 1 really good player.

We win tonight, and Arlington will go into full panic mode and I LOVE IT. They're going to give up the farm for Shohei or someone like that just to try and beat us.

I am a bit bummed by Dana's comments yesterday.

I get that this is a seller's market so trades are going to be very expensive and the farm is not deep on high ceiling impact prospects but I think this team needs more than other recent Astros teams have needed at the deadline.

Hopefully whoever this #5 starter they decide to bring in can help rest Javier and Brown. Thiscteam absolutely needs them at their best in the playoffs.

It's looking more and more like France is pitching himself into a major role.

The bullpen needs at least 1 more leverage arm. Montero has been better of late and Martinez looks like he can pitch more. Pressly, Abreu, Neris, and Maton have got to be given multiple days off and limited use the next few weeks or else this will be like 2021 playoffs all over again.

More production vs RHP is important too but adding pitching must be the priority.

Hopefully Chicago is hustling to get the Lynn deal done because they expect to complete quite a few more trades over the next 6 days. They really should turn over their entire roster. If managed properly they could end next week with a clear payroll and the top farm system in the league. Grandal, Andrus, Anderson, Moncada, Benintendi, Robert, Jimenez, Cease, Giolito, Kopech, Graveman, Lopez, Middleton, Kelly, and Bummer should all be available, and only Robert should have a price high enough to make a trade unlikely.

What about a guy like Steven Matz? Can't imagine he'd cost much... and could provide value as either a starter or bullpen guy (and is a lefty).

Compared to LMJ, Ronel, Bielak, and Javier... Urquidy can get through 4 innings without 90 pitches

The 6th man is also your long reliever when there are off days just like Javier was last year.

Agree on the trying to manage fan expectations. I doubt the interview will affect other GMs. If the Astros come away with a really good player, I'd guess odds are that it is a bat or a bullpen ace. My concern with SP is that Castillo's deal last season may set the price this year for ToR SPs with a short amount of control. That wouldn't have stopped Luhnow when he had a treasure trove of pitching prospects. I expect Brown to try his hardest to get a ToR starter, I'm just not sure whether he will be willing to pay the price other teams are willing to pay.

Raised my eyebrows as well. Guess the thought would be to improve the DH spot/go with the hot hand at 1B in the playoffs

I get that there are less relievers to cover the same amount of innings for a 6-man rotation. The Astros bullpen problem is not taxed due to the number of relievers in the pen. The Astros have used their pen less than all, but three teams. Considering Framber is on the mound tonight, and the Rangers may have to face Alvarez and Altuve tonight, there is a decent chance the Astros bullpen will have pitched the least amount of innings after tonight. The Astros pen is taxed because there are only 4 guys that Dusty trusts, and he uses those 4 guys a lot while the other 3-4 guys are sipping on Mai Tais. Having Dubin, Kuhnel, or Watkins as the 8th guy with a 5-man rotation will likely not affect the usage of those 4 guys.
