The reason to keep them all is that it makes sense to put them against each other and see who emerges as the best, imo. But yeah- those are the two areas to trade from.
Addition by subtraction may be the best way to help the bullpen. Getting shed of Martinez, Stanek, & Montero then replacing them by trading for one high leverage short reliever and bringing up two multi inning relievers who can go 3 innings each, say Arraghetti & Blanco you get a more effective and a better rested pen.
The problem with a 6 man rotation is it puts more strain and more innings on the bullpen. It's great for an overworked rotation. With 7 bullpen pitchers instead of 8, each reliever will pitch just a little more often, not less.
Not when you are loading younger pitchers with more innings than they've ever pitched. Maybe the younger pitchers are a little fresher. Maybe there's a little less wear an tear. Maybe you don't have to pull a starter in the 3rd inning and burn your pen. Baseball isn't a world of absolutes and I firmly believe that a six man rotation will help this group. Too bad there wasn't a recent example . . . . oh . . . . wait . . .
I think it would make sense to go to a 5 man rotation and 3 tandem partners for about a month. Framber Javier/blanco Brown/Bielak Urquidy France/Martinez. Framber gets you 6 or 7, Urquidy gets you 5, tandems get you 7 or 9. That leaves something like 10 innings to soak up every 5 trips through the lineup between Presley, Abreu, Neris, Stanek and Maton. I think Montero has some sort of arm discomfort that will require 2 weeks or a month on the DL. Keep some innings and pitches off the young guys arms. The traditional 1 inning guys then pitch no more than 2X’s every 5 days. Don’t know if that optimized innings but would keep appearances and workload down somewhat during the dog days. Or- failing that as a strict thing just move Bielak and blanco to the pen and tell them their job is to finish the game one time every 5 days, scoreboard be damned.
I'm thinking it will cost something like Bednar for Gilbert, Whitley, Corona. I'm hoping you can replace Melton instead of Gilbert in the deal. Then trade Pena, Gilbert, Lee, Arrighetti for Cease. Doubtful the Sox take a pitcher coming off of an ACL in a trade.
The only way a 7 man bullpen does not pitch more innings, per pitcher, than an 8 man is if the manager keeps the starters in longer. Since starters are not going to suddenly be allowed to throw 120 pitches and the manager will still pull them if they have allowed 11 baserunners and 7 runs in the 4th inning, a 6 man rotation reduces stress and innings on the starters but adds them to the bullpen.

Unless extra rest for the starters, they can all squeeze in one more inning each if they can more effective by allowing a lower WHIP...
I really hope we don’t trade away Pena, Yanier, and Gilbert. They are the Astros future stars. Most don’t realized how lucky we are to have Pena replaced Correa. Pena just going thru 2nd year slump but come playoff, I want him to bat second behind Yordan again. And when was the last time we have a hitting catcher like Diaz coming thru our minor league system. Lee had his chances and couldn’t hit worth a lick. Gilbert probably our most excited prospect since Yordan. I would hate to lose those 3 field players.
I think keeping them all is a luxury we could afford if we didn't have so many holes to fill. Unfortunately, we have holes to fill.
In theory, that's great, but the real culprit, particularly with Maton is overuse. They need starters to eat up more innings more than anything.
Those guys are my personal #11, #3 and #9 on my trade value list. If we trade them away we better get back a shitload. Or, put another way they are #40, HM and unranked on Fan Graphs top 50 most valuable trade chips. And they only rank MLB players so that's not a knock on Gilbert. Yeah- they better bring back a ton if moved (and I wouldn't move Yainer for almost anything.
I think you like most on this MB are underestimating France. Is he an ace? No, but he's been a solid SP3 type guy this year.
Sure. All is an overstatement. We should keep most though. OF in the organization that I think profile to averagish or above major league players: Tucker (2.5), Chas (3.5) Meyers (4.5) Yordan (5.5) Gilbert (6+), Clifford (6+- maybe 1b), Barber (6+) Guys I think belong (or will) on a 26 man roster (Julks, Leon) Really interesting guys with superstar upside: Baez, Gomez, Interesting guys a level down- Melton, Corona, Loperfido That means you have as possible trade pieces for the appropriate return (in order of least likely for me to trade), Tucker, Chas, Gilbert, Clifford, Barber, Meyers. Keep- Yordan, Baez, Gomez (I don't trade guys with super star potential as tertiary pieces, which that's what they are in any trade) Trade for pieces at the margin to help this year and maybe next year: Meyers, Julks, Melton, Leon, Corona, Loperfido, Barber (most likely to least likely for me to have enough value to make it make sense Trade only for Monster or very significant return: Tucker, Chas, Gilbert, Clifford. That sets your floor at very very good OF for a looooong time. It gives you a potential ceiling of spectacular OF from now through the end of the decade. Keep churning out a middle rotation starter every year with an occasional ace and this thing probably sustains itself through the end of the decade.
How many teams will JV realistically waive his no trade clause for? That right there will limit the return as I’d bet on that list being limited to pretty much us and LAD.
It is a very stupid idea. People are panicking. We will be getting Alvarez back and probably Altuve. Giving up one of the best defensive shortstops in the game that has shown to have excellent power and was absolutely clutch on the biggest stage is asinine. I've come around to giving up Gilbert and a few others in a trade. Pena is having a down year, but could turn it around anytime. I bet we are first in our division by the end of the month. I want another SP, but not if it costs us Pena.
