Pod up for our trade value part 1 column with the 12 Astros with the absolute most trade value. These guys are all really good/really valuable! This is two parts- so part 1. It’s my favorite one we’ve done this year. Chas the past calendar year 417 PAs 0.275/0.363 /0.475 137 wRC+ 3.7 fWAR Here's to hoping pitchers don't find a good adjustment. Getting sliders in the zone, but not hanging too many seems to be the current strategy. That is a hard strategy to execute.
interesting.....min 100 PA, Chas is the #3 CF in wRC+ (2023 fan graphs) for grins (Bellinger 4, Luis Robert 8, Siri 21, Straw 51)
26th (min 100 PAs as a CF, this removes the corner OFs that slide to CF occasionally, what prospecthugger said if 100 PAs from anyone that ever plays CF)
That seems about right to me then. That makes Jake's floor an out standing 4th OF with 4.5 years of club control for cheap- or a starter on a second division team in CF, with some potential upside.
I don't think Dana Brown realizes he'll be here next year and JDB won't be... everyone in Houston's waiting for you to show that THAT matters. Swangin' & swingin'... gotta getcha your own ring and.... #LYNH
That's a pretty good floor. If the Astros keep him, they will likely continue to have the best OF in baseball for at least the next 2 years.
Trade him. That’s also Gilbert’s floor I bet and between Chas, Tucker, Yordan, Gilbert and whoever else come us we will be fine. Jake has to be worth a. Innings eating starter or an elite bullpen arm in a walk year or a good bullpen arm with a couple years of control to someone I’d think. That’s the classic- he’s more valuable to you than me bc I’ve got a surplus. I say this as a Jake fan btw.
That was always part of the criticism from Dusty. Dusty just wanted Diaz to figure it out and work harder with game prep before handing over the keys. He wanted to teach him his life lesson early. Unfortunately, injuries and the Rangers being pretty darn good made it impossible to be patient with Diaz and Baker.
Notice he said "future" and not "now" My interpretation of this is that Dusty realizes with Yordan back and Abreu no longer a black hole he simply has to start catching Diaz more so he's making comments to lessen the social media explosion when it starts happening. He also has to be realizing that he can't fall on the Maldy sword for 60 more games and escape criticism if the Astros don't win.
if you filter fan graphs to include all OF (min 100 PAs) sorted by wRC+, you get: Yordan 2 Chas 8 Tucker 9 pretty impressive...no other team has 2 in the top 10 (TB 2 in top 12 - raley/arozarena) btw, with Yordan's injury and Chas not playing every day, they have about the same PAs
I'd say Gilbert's floor is lower than that (pretty much every prospect's floor is), and Meyers is an MLB player right now. I'm skeptical that an innings eating starter, an elite bullpen arm in a walk year, or a good bullpen arm with a couple years of control can help the Astros as much as Meyers can over this season and the next 2. I'd also hope that the Astros could get those without including Meyers. If the Astros end up in a big park in the postseason, I want Chas, Meyers, and Tucker in the game as the OF. I don't see someone that I would have play most days as surplus. Meyers should only be dealt in very unusual trades. For instance, if Robert has upset the CSW that they are willing to trade him, but want someone to replace him in CF. Personally, I expect other teams would want Gilbert more, and if it was someone that I would consider trading Meyers, I'd also consider Gilbert or some combination of other minor leaguers. I do get that the Astros are exploring the unusual trade market, but I'm skeptical most teams are willing to swap a good not great MLB for a good not great MLB player (though I see that more likely in the future). Caveat: If Gilbert or someone else is ready to be as good as Meyers is right now in the majors, I'd be more willing to trade Meyers.
Could have been an all star this year regardless of strike zone recognition, had he played 80% of the time in the first half. If he figures out the strike zone he could be a hall of famer.
I guess that’s our fundamental disagreement. I think 2024 he will be as good or better than Meyers, he might be now, and we have enough defense to be just fine in the Of while we need other things. That’s my take. Snell and Hader package for Meyers as the headliner plus prospects not named Clifford and Gilbert would be my ideal. Or a Jake version of SS and move Peña for something good that plugs a hole.
This is where I’m at. His current production catching 80% of the time makes him a borderline all star. If he learns to control the strike zone that makes him a potential top 5 MVP candidate.
If there's any scenario in which Diaz doesn't catch AT LEAST 32+ of those games (majority), then the Astros manager has FAILED to put the best product/team on the field to win.
