Over his last 25 BIP his EV, expected OBP,SLG and BA have all crept under league average. Not gonna stop any of us from being nervous AF when he comes in, but it's a positive sign.
Serious question: why do rehab assignments have to be in aa or aaa? Yordan for instance, he’s playing for space cowboys. Why can’t he rehab on the Astros? He’s still swinging the bat either way. Might as well get something for it on the big club.
He gets to play in the field and face pitchers who are actually trying their hardest to get him out. Its not required but not sure how you want him to play in the field and face live pitchers going all-out on the big league club? Now whether or not these elite hitters actually need those assignments, or can they just get re-activated and start playing again, remains to be seen. Makes more sense for pitchers. I suppose they also want to make sure the injured area will bounce back after he puts himself through real game situations/movements.
Players don't have to rehab in the minors. They typically do so that pitchers can get up their velocity/pitch counts and hitters can get their timing down. Sometimes batters have rehab assignments that are really short as the batter's timing was still good. Other times, it is longer as it takes the batter time. Most teams would rather risk missing a few games of a guy being ready earlier than expected than have a guy come up and take a month to get his timing down.
Gives the club a lot more room to experiment without hurting the big league club's roster/flexibility/ability to win. E.g. they can have him play anywhere from 0-9 innings in the field or just do 1-2 PA's if they wanted to. If he's on the big league club its a bigger deal if he's throwing off the other players/OFers' routines. It's also lower stakes. If he's on the big league club, everyone is gonna have a certain level of expectation which is fine if he has a linear positive recovery. Flip side is if they had brought Brantley straight to the majors when he still swinging a bat. that would have been problematic.
I think if at the beginning of the season you said the Astros had a top 2 OF by fWAR, it might not be surprising. But then realize Brantley hasn't played any and Yordan's played 22 games in LF and it becomes "oh damn that's pretty impressive". EDIT* looks like all of Yordan's fWAR is included in the total, not just his OF time.
I was wondering if anyone kept track of that. When MLB goes to an automatic strike zone, Bregman should be a huge beneficiary of that. It's not going to help his popout problem, but it should result in more walks and a higher OBP% for sure.
How about balls called inside the strike zone though- how many of those does he have? You really have to subtract those from the bullshit strikes. Otherwise it likely becomes a game of, who swings at the least amount of pitches?
It would be nice to get an update on Altuve. He's obviously not rehabbing in Sugar Land so what exactly is going on?
Even if one subtracted the bullshit balls, I expect it is still a game of who swings the least (i.e., catchers trick the umps more than catchers frame strikes poorly). Guys that swing the least and likely get screwed the most typically have great eyes as it is very hard to stay in the majors without swinging and without a good eye.
probably right. But, subtracting out the bullshit balls would give you a bit of a better idea of how bad the actual penalty is that Bregman has faced. 58 bullshit strikes doesn't tell me something if I don't know whether or not they missed called 28 bullshit balls or 78 bullshit balls.
It is 22. Most of the team gets between 1.3 and 1.6 percentages of pitches throw to them called balls that should have been called strikes. Tucker being the big exception at 2.7% with 42 bullshit balls. 34 Rutschman, Adley 33 García, Luis 30 Bregman, Alex 30 Jung, Josh 29 Thomas, Lane Oddly, Soto is much like Tucker and gets a disproportionate amount of bullshit balls as well.
