    No

He would be an upgrade over Hensley but he does not meet the needs of the team and would be too expensive for a luxury sitting on the bench.

S.D. is only 5.5 games back from PHI for the 3rd WC. They may decide to be buyers instead of sellers. Will be interesting to see how things play out this week.

Apparently he is (or at least somebody is leaking it with a purpose in mind)... they're looking for young pitching.

Either way, the Astros can't likely meet their asking price nor can they afford to give up young pitchers.

I’d be extremely surprised if he was traded. But I don’t know why Houston would at all be interested in a RHH 2B with a league average bat.

Smells like a pending deal with the Mariners. They are desperate for a 2nd baseman after the Kolten Wong experiment has blown up in their face.

Tilman spent more than Les... literally...

Look up payroll vs tax level. Tilman paid a higher % than Les. People just gave Les a pass because he won rings and didn't have billions...

Well reasoned and logical, but you left out the risk of the unknow...

Trevor Bauer got market rate on a shorter deal. That deal went bust for reasons that can't be predicted.

10 years is a long time... I'm guessing Kyle is a level headed guy but if he starts getting substance abuse or that and hitting a woman all of a sudden you could have dead money...

Not saying likely, just that it's a risk to factor...

India has talent. they're just loaded with infielders who project to be better. He'd be a surplus here as well, but better and younger than anybody not named Altuve.

I just went to spotrac that has back to 2011.

The last 6 years Les owned the team, they spent an average of 86.5% of the luxury tax threshold.

The past 7 seasons that Fertitta has owned it is 98.7% average.

Now if you take out 2017-18 because you argue those contracts were in place for the season when TF bought right before; he still averages 98.6% of the luxury tax amount.

Les paid the tax once out of those 6 years while TF paid twice. TF has zero seasons under the cap since buying the team while Les was under the cap in 3 of his final 6 seasons owning the team.

Les was FAR cheaper than TF.

I suspect part of the reason he sold was because he saw the operating costs of the salaries going up and much of his wealth is illiquid. TF has spent 72% more on player salaries in the past 6 seasons than Les in his final 6 seasons (841,154,000 to 487,218,000).

Sorry, I know it's Astros talk here, just wanted to correct the common misperception about TF vs Les in spending.

Hoping Crane is more like TF and less like LA....

Skyg has always been a dweeb on here. Not sure how someone could be 12 years old in 2014 and still be 12 today but he's managed it. He's like that little kid who you've learned to ignore but then starts yelling for attention thinking he just needs to be louder.

These are people and living in the real world. There is always risk.

But SOMEBODY is going to give him 10 years. It's just the nature of MLB FA and contracts in 2023.

The Astros have to decide if they want to keep him over some of the prospects coming up. If they do, they can start that 10 year clock 2 years before anyone else and save a little AAV.

if they do, I think he is about as safe as any 10 year contract can be.

As I said, not likely, but a risk not mentioned... it may be only 2%...

I would do it but that doesn't mean they would... at some point you have to lock guys up so the others can see you're willing to do what it takes to win and reward performance.

I believe Pierce Johnson was mentioned in here as a potential target...

The prospects the Braves traded were Vodnik and Gordon. Vodnik was their 10th best prospect and Gordon their 26th ranked prospect according to mlb.com

Solid return for the Rockies but nothing crazy. I would guess a comparable return from Houston’s system would be something like Forrest Whitley and Rhett Kouba.

    Astros get:
    RHP Justin Verlander
    LHP Brooks Raley
    $11.83M cash considerations for 2024

    Mets get:
    RHP Rafael Montero
    OF Pedro Leon
    RHP Jose Urquidy
    RHP Ronel Blanco
    LHP Parker Mushinski
    IF Shay Whitcomb

Our cost for Verlander is $14.44M in 2023 (prorated), $31.50M in 2024, and $35M in 2025 (if it vests)
We get out of the Montero deal, so it is just a net gain of $20M for next year (for us, that’s what NYM is unloading). I'd rather spend the money on a 41-year old HoF than a volatile journeyman (until last year) reliever. I don't think he'll ever pitch 200 innings in a regular season again but he's still good for 6 or 7 quality innings per start, which is huge. And I believe he'll give up fewer hits with our defense, too.

Rotation: Verlander, Valdez, France, Javier, Brown
    Bullpen: Pressly/Abreu/Neris/Maton/Raley/Martinez/Stanek

Not a bad hypothetical trade but Verlander has a no-trade so it is likely he will require that option to become either a guaranteed year or a player option.

I do think the fewer number of sellers might make it more likely that package deals are done to reduce the volume of trades they’re working as well as consolidate the returning value. Possible package deals Houston might be interested in:

    Stroman/Bellinger
    Cease/Robert
    Giolito/Graveman
    Snell/Hader
    Verlander/Raley
    Lorenzen/Cisnero
    Candelario/Edwards Jr.
    Montgomery/Stratton
    Hand/McMahon
    Bednar/Choi
    Barlow/Singer
    Seth Brown/Sam Moll

I thought of that. I feel like he’d be more inclined to waive a trade here (no state income tax, familiarity, etc), but usually, agreeing to guarantee the vesting option would be a condition. Perhaps agree to guarantee it, with us paying $30M and NYM eating $5M.
