Astros should consider trading Peña at THIS deadline.

I could see a rotation made up of some combinations of These starters between now and the playoffs rotating guys out for two or three weeks at a time to refresh them as needed.
    Valdez
    Javier
    Urquidy
    Brown
    France
    Gordon
    B Bielak
    Arrighetti

You have listed ten wasted roster spots.
Throw-ins: Bannon, Madris, Hensley, Gage, Mushinski, Paredes, all other prospects in full season ball
Take him: Kuhnel, B Taylor, Watkins
    Albatross: Montero
If you could simply DFA all ten you might get a few inquiries for low return trades, but mostly not.
Anyway how many prospects can you name that are more deserving of those roster spots?

Jeremy Pena is better than anything we could get for him right now.
His clutch #s are actually very good this year
    2 outs, RISP .357 avg .400 B%
    2 outs in general .286 avg .352 OB%

And also want to see him in the playoffs again.

I am in favor of any trade that sheds us of Blah Madris.

Which is why you only trade him for an ace with years of control.

There's always someone the Astros could try to trade him for, but it won't happen. He'll be an Astro for years to come.

I’m getting a feeling that Verlander is gonna be an Astro again soon

Mets needed to come out of the break strong to get back in the race and they haven’t

Verlander has a no trade but would waive it to come here if anywhere

From Cranes standpoint, he gets Verlander for another playoff run and another season, and even if Mets don’t pick up any future salary we end up paying him less than 60 million for the two years

Also because of the salary and age, there won’t be nearly as big of a prospect price on him as some of the others that have been mentioned

Maybe get a pen arm along with him

Brandon Drury or Bobby Witt Jr would be my targets to dismiss Pena from SS this year

Nostalgic wise I wouldn't mind at all. But I don't think Crane will gladly pay in prospects what he could have had for free (not counting salary) unless the prospects are indeed minimal.

I also don't see the Mets trading him.

But if it did happen it it would be one of the smartest moves (if this was planned before the season). Imagine not having to pay JVs salary for most of the year but still have him for the playoffs?

I wouldn’t think it would require Gilbert, and honestly after that I would give up anyone in our system (not on the roster) for JV

He has been pretty dominant after an up and down start

Don’t have anybody to replace him long term. But he may need a trip to sugar land to get his mind right when Altuve comes back, so dubon can slide over to short.

Zero chance Witt is available and if he was it would take Pena + Gilbert.

I like Drury as a bench guy up grade over Hensley/ Kessinger but not as a shortstop.

Cohen is on record as 1) priority of restocking the farm system and 2) will pay down contracts to get the best prospects possible rather than taking lesser prospects to save money.

    Astros would be outbid.

You realize if JV pitches 140 innings next season he has vest option that kicks in for 35 mil for '25?

chas-centered deal for stroman and bellinger? maybe give something else and get another usable asset or flier prospects from them.

if brantley comes back, the non-maldy lineup would be insane.

I don't think the team will do it but he really does need it. Even to wack some hittable fastballs and get that strength back and then go from there on breaking balls. Right now he has no strength at the plate and he's completely clueless. He's getting killed with all pitches.
