I feel gaslit after seeing it given all the positive reviews. I would give it a solid 6/10. The constant music playing over the dialogue was distracting af The conversations were happening so fast, almost zero pause between answer and response, felt very unnatural. The editing jumped all over the place. It wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. They made the security clearance thing out to be a much bigger deal than it was. General Groves was right, the necessity of the moment meant they had to be less selective on security at the time to get the best scientists, but later they could afford to have stricter standards, especially given there were Soviet spies at Los Alamos. A deal-breaker with security clearances is dishonesty and lack of candor, which Oppenheimer admitted to. The film (unintentionally) did an accurate job showing how the FBI and swamp destroy political opponents. That has never stopped since J Edgar Hoover engrained it into FBI culture from the start. The moral case for bombing Japan was stronger than the film portrayed. Victory would have required an invasion that resulted in far more loss of life. Japan started the war, and thousands of Americans were dying daily because of it. The prediction that atomic weapons would have a deterrent effect has largely been borne out.
True, and they seemed everywhere in 1968, but Kubrick's film truly was mind-blowing, in my humble opinion, especially the confrontation between HAL and David Bowman. That, and what happens to Bowman afterwards.
I would agree the dialogue happened very fast. Much like every Aaron Sorkin movie/TV show he's ever made. That and the quicker editing (at least compared to previous Nolan flicks) took some getting used to. But after I kind of settled in I was good and enjoyed the hell out of it. Cillian Murphy was fantastic. Matt Damon was really really good as well. Emily Blunt kind of came out of nowhere to surprise me with how good she was. I wouldn't have expected her to have much of a role in this movie but she was good. Some have called this Nolan's best movie. I don't know that I would go that far. It was a very heavy movie and I would say that it is perhaps his most important movie. I hope it does well box-office-wise because I'd like Nolan to have the freedom to continue to do whatever he wants. I did find the nudity/sex scenes to feel a little unnecessary. I'd be curious to hear why Nolan felt the need to put that in there because I think the could have easily gotten a PG-13 rating on this if they cut that out (and maybe a litte language). Generally studios will lean hard on directors/producers to get that PG-13 rating over an R so they can get more butts in the seats.
Just watched it. I really liked it. The acting was very good. The last hour was fantastic. It didn’t really feel like 3 hours to me. I kind of want to go see it again, probably will.
Eh, just like my old man's old man and I used to watch in black and white back in the day. Don't blame me for being nostalgic...although I'm taking the family to go see this one tomorrow.
Nothing more awkward and cringe inducing, sitting in an auditorium full of strangers whenever something like this happens. If it's an erotic thriller I can understand but a biopic? Cringe city
