I don't see why Peña helps them if they already have Tim Anderson. Can someone tell me why Chicago would want both? McCormick I can see, with Robert going out. But why include Peña in a deal without Anderson coming back?
It definitely goes against their philosophy and it depends how highly they value Ohtani. Currently he’s the best hitter and arguably best pitcher in the game. Can he sustain this pace? Will he get injured? These are all questions those making the big bucks have to answer or decide. However one thing is for sure, if his career stays on his current path he will undoubtedly go down as the best player of all time. And when you look back and had the chance to possibly get him…..
With a potential outfield of McCormick/Robert/Tucker on their current contracts, Gilbert doesn't even sniff the next 3 postseasons. You absolutely include him in a trade to make that happen, right?
The more I think about it, the more I believe that if we get Robert, Tucker will be involved. The rational being that Tucker will not sign an extension and he will be asking for more than we will pay when his contract is up. Getting Robert would essentially be the equivalent to getting Tucker to sign a 2 year extension for 20 million per year. This is the type of move Brown is all about. Heck, I could see us tacking on another couple of years for Robert. Tucker, Meyers, Baliek, Luis Garcia, another 2 pitching prospects, another 2 fielding prospects not named Gilbert for Cease, Robert, and Gravemen.
As much as any team could use Ohtani, you bring up valuable points, you have possibly your best pitcher and hitter wrapped into one player, if he goes out you really lose 2 players. Can he keep up this pace, time will tell but man I love the guy, but I would be hesitant to sign him to some crazy 10-year contract. To be fair I hate any long-term contract (Tucker can change my mind on that) and would rather load up a big 5-7 year deal. In my lifetime, he is a once in a lifetime player in terms of possibly him being your best hitter and pitcher all on the same team......that's crazy good
I'd just like to point out that we still need to make the playoffs first. The way things are looking today - all the wildcards could come out of the east and the Rangers are still in position to take the west. All it takes is a bad two or three games on our end, and there are six teams that could take the last wild card spot. All this talk about playoffs - we need to win to get there and that's much easier said than done.
Trade scenario involving pulling off 3 separate moves. 1 McCullers, Garcia, & Urquidy for Cease 2 Dubin & Whitley for Stroman 3 Meyers for Dylan Carlson (switch hitting 4th OF) Rotation Valdez Cease Stroman Brown France Bullpen Blanco Bielak Stanek Martinez Maton Abreu Neris Pressly Montero IL Out Field Tucker McCormick Alvarez* Carlson
No. Gilbert could surpass them. Just like how Bagwell surpassed the other third basemen that were initially ranked ahead of him in the Boston system. Also... Astros had an alleged surplus of outfielders with Eric Anthony, Steve Finley, Luis Gonzalez, and Kenny Lofton. And guess what happened? Lofton surpassed all of them but was traded. Anthony maybe had a decent year but essentially busted. Gonzo needed roids to be useful. And Finley ended up being the only piece that was solid in an Astros uni.
The other 3 guys are ALREADY playing at an All Star to MVP level RIGHT NOW, but you're going to hold on to Gilbert on the chance he COULD surpass All Star to MVP level?
I think Luis Robert in our OF would be the key. I think Tucker will resign I just don't know how much I'd pay Bregman and Altuve with there age being considered. And there slow slumps and injurys. If we could get them to a decent home town deal then Tucker is cake.
There are too many ways for trades not to work than for trades to work . . . I still think we need to focus on the fringes and some inning eaters. Love Cease, especially if we get him. From a value standpoint though, I think we can get more out of long relief and a mid rotation starter. Even if we burn assests for Cease and LRJ . . . we still need more pitching. Cease only helps us every 5th or 6th day and we need to win regular season games. Love it if we get him, but not sure he fits our immediate need, especially if we are giving up parts of our current rotation to get him. Bielak and France should be untouchable right now. Should be thinking about a six man rotation from here on out - and putting us in a position to win as many of those games as possible. We are a stomach flu outbreak away from missing the playoffs all together. Boston and New York are on our heals and Anaheim is right there. We need wins. We need pitchers than can go 6 plus innings.
They have to consider trading Tucker. If the White Sox would not be interested in a straight up deal for Tucker as part of the Luis Robert/ Dylan Cease dream acquisition, surely the assets Tucker brings in could be used. This is one of the few moves out there that could move the needle in the near and long term, IMO. Robert is every bit the 5 tool player Tucker is under a longer and more manageable contract. There are chemistry and injury concerns that mitigate his value, but it is worth the gamble. Cease is the bigger prize here- he has elite stuff with a few more years of team control. With both of these White Sox players they have sky high potential with inconsistent production. The White Sox underachieving for three years now may make ownership more willing to shake things up in a big way if the Astros make a Godfather offer.
He's a special player, and I'd love to have him. As mentioned, I just don't see the Astros giving up the assets required to get him... and if they do, there is virtually no chance he signs his next contract with Houston. All of the "greatest player of all time" rhetoric is a little crazy. Assuming Ohtani plays another 10 years (age 38) and maintains his current pace, he wouldn't even crack the Top 15 in any of the advanced metrics and likely not the top 25 in any of the career stats (wins as a pitcher, strikeouts, HR, RBI, hits). So I'm compelled to ask, other than being a 2-way player, what makes him the greatest of all time? He'd need another 18 or so years at his current pace to even touch Ruth.
if he maintains his pace, **** counting stats. If he’s in the race for cy young and mvp for 10 more years getting close to the HR record every year? That would be the such a high level peak it would be the greatest 10 year run in the history of baseball.
