After the Civil War, as part of the reconstruction process, Lincoln levied a tax to help pay for the war. At that time, the US was far from being a Superpower. This was in the mid-1860s, some 70 years before the Great Depression.

so your convenient claim about taxation, thru sleight-of-hand, is a baseless one.

the smoot hawley act was the one catalyst that led to the Great Depression.

Lincoln was not alive during reconstruction.

On August 5, 1861, President Lincoln imposes the first federal income tax by signing the Revenue Act. Strapped for cash with which to pursue the Civil War,
Lincoln and Congress agreed to impose a 3 percent tax on annual incomes over $800.

it did not lead to the Great Depression which started in 1929, some 68 yrs later, several business cycles later.

Our dumb political discussions aside, we need to keep an eye on Argentina. Things going very badly there right now and no telling what will arise from it. That's a huge country with a lot of people.

Honestly have no idea. Just have some friends with family there, and I've had some students from there who are absolutely petrified of going home. So your guess is as good as mine, but mass exodus could definitely happen if people can't eat and all their economic resources become useless overnight based on the runaway inflation.

This historical example in the 1920s did not end well, in terms of a shift to radicalism.

Cmon man give me a break. We have MAGA scumbags in our country who are convinced their the victims and everyone is coming for them. We've allowed these terrorists to hijack our political spectrum.

We have folks like @Salvy @Commodore spinning braindead conspiracies. We're nobody to judge
