How the Rockets get Jarace Walker and Dereck Lively? Rox young players are due for an extension 3 yrs from now that's why FVVs deal is 3 years. What do you mean by handcuffing themselves for years lolwut you want FVV to sign a fully unguaranteed contract? Lol
ApacheWarrior, you say you want bite sized contracts and list Cam Johnson. Cam is on 4 years for $94,000,000. Jevon Carter's deal is 3 years. In contrast, FVV is on a 2 year deal with a team option for a third. And as for Landale, we have him on what is essentially a one year deal at 8 mil (not 10) with team options on future years.
He has absolutely zero idea how to play basketball and he's still getting good stats, defends, and clearly plays hard. I have been impressed based on his summer league play.
Cam Whitmore is a worthwhile player to develop specially where we picked him up. We need to have patience with him.
He is a long way off though, he has some good skills - but he needs to learn the Team game, RGV will be good for him..... DD
Hey - I didn't love the moves either(although I can see a way that Brooks contract becomes more movable if Ime can break him of thinking he is a shot creator). I'm not saying the moves were justified - just that the new CBA provided a very specific motivator for Houston that was different than other teams and that's why they threw cash at players in ways others didn't dare. I agree that there were very likely better ways to spend that money but I've been ringing the "hoarding draft picks and not playing the FA game is not sustainable" bell for several years now because it caused us to spend heavily in one shot in a relatively weak FA class when we could have been doing this incrementally over the last few FA seasons and thus had a staggering of contracts to give us more flexibility. I think this is where Morey was a better GM than Stone - Stone is thinking in phase gates and I think Morey was maybe a little more practical in not handicapping between phases. Clearly after this draft we are in phase 2 of the rebuild - develop talent with the understanding that we have some semblance of a team there but we have to identify and build around that - but let's not invest too heavily on the vets who will help develop our young guys if the student outgrows the teacher sooner than expected. At least in Brooks case, I have legit concerns that Tari may be better than him sooner rather than later. As for KPJ, I have also been preaching trading him for a while now and I like his skill set quite a bit...but he seems to be a great candidate to flip to a contending team at the trade deadline and pick up future picks in return because he WILL move the needle for some contending team in search of a decent two way player/bench scorer.
Yeah reading his post last night i didnt understand the logic really. These are short contracts. The only one that extends is Brooks. Hell even KPJ is one year contracts.
Judging from Cam personality, his growth seems tied to people who can read him and help him break through barriers. Tricky in the sense that each phase of his career has different requirements, an athletic NBA ready body, and a growing ego that comes with a fat contract. Seems like a no brainer for everyone, but extroverts are easier to communicate with and he seems like the type that wants to take it all in and figure it out himself.
Really good, I think he'll just need a year to improve his fundamentals and work on his shot. Great pick at #20.
Whitmore needs work BUT he just turned 19 last week. If we had taken him at four or in the trade back, I don’t think that anyone would be super disappointed by his performance in summer league.
Is the G-League really a good situation for Cam? He's going to be the most physically dominant player on the court every night. Seems like sitting on the bench with Udoka and vets would be better for his development.
Yeah, that was my point earlier. If Whitmore's weakness is the team game, then playing in the G-league is not likely going to help him learn because down there it's pretty everybody fend for himself. I am sure he will dominate and be one of the most prolific scorers from the get go. If he stays with the Rockets, he probably won't get a lot of minutes, at least not for a while. Brooks will be the wing starter with KPJ backing up. And there are also Tari and Tate. Adjusting his game to compete for PT may be good for his development. So it's kind of a trade off between getting more rep or learning in the system.
Cam shouldn't be on the Vipers. Spend a lot of practice time with him. Let him work against the starters. Give him a few minutes here and there with specific instructions and a defined role. Expand his use as he learns and improves. Profit.
He needs to learn how to operate in a team concept - make the right pass, create other opportunities for teammates using his gifts, etc. He needs reps practicing this - G league gives him the reps.
It’s not either or. He can spend a few weeks during some point in the season with RVG. During points with injuries perhaps get some spattering of games with decent minutes. Otherwise practice with the coaches a lot and watch and learn in the bench as well.
