One thing about an early extension is that it makes it easier to trade the player at the trade deadline or pre-moritorium if they have already signed the extension. Edited for clarity...
The opposite is true. Once a player gets their early rookie extension it makes trading them extremely hard until the following season. It’s why Philly hasn’t extended Tyrese Maxey yet. The Rockets plan to use cap space in the summer of 25/26, which requires using Jalen and Sengun’s below max cap holds. So there’s only 2 ways they get extended: 1. One of them ascends to be a true locked in franchise player / definite perennial all star (unlikely) 2. We are able to extend either player for less first year salary than their cap hold ($30M for Jalen and $18M for Sengun), thereby opening more cap space
If the Rockets are saying "let's give/not give this guy the max... Something something Silas" a year from now it says more about them than Silas. Most great players start out as high picks on bad teams - that's just the way at works. Silas is gone. Time for the high picks to show (in the real season) or let the market figure ot out.
As of right now, you'd look to lowball them with a team friendly deal. If they take it, awesome, if not RFA. . That said, either of them could step it up and earn more than that by the time they are due. As of now, neither have come anywhere near earning a max extension though.
Holy F an intelligent reasonable opinion on clutchfans. Some people’s heads have been broken because the Rockets obtained 3 high picks over 3 seasons before they started to give picks back for the Paul trade. Quite a few angry and bitter middle aged men on this site.
Look at how many teams are giving Max players up these days because they gave it to them early. Bradley Beal, Zack Lavine - I mean good orgs wait to make a proper decision. DD
Sabonis was integral in the Kings being a top seed in the West last year. Edwards hasn't really earned his max at all and only got it because Minnesota is a state no one wants to live in. Ball is the most in demand archetype in the league of which there are only a handful. Lamelo, Luka, Amen, Cade, Paolo and Scoot Henderson are the only ones at this point who are young and matter. So he's going to get extended. Little preview here for Amen Thompson. I'm not sure either of Jalen or Sengun gets the max. Both have enormous questions when it comes to offensive decision making and defensive aptitude. Whitmore has made Jalen a little more expendable and Amen has made Sengun a little more expendable. My guess is neither gets the max. Of the two I think Jalen takes precedence *if* he shows effort on defense. If he doesn't then throw money at Sengun.
I took it that you were getting upset with people who suggest they needed to see progress. I take it you agree? I like all our young guys. But if they don't significantly improve next year, no max!!
No I get upset when people say things like "his ceiling is Zack Lavine". Or "it's unlike he progresses". Merely stating he should progress to get to star level is not the problem. Look at specifically the comments I really to and what their assertions are.
Must be tough for you and frustrating running around the entire internet trying to get them to say what you agree with or like - instead of what they think or believe. Exhausting even......take a break. DD
Nobody in this thread is angry - it's just people talking about what guys would have to do to earn max extension or instead hit RFA. That's it man.
What are the max years and max money a player can be offered under rules? If any player should get locked down to play for your team his entire career its Sengun. I hope he retires a Rockets.
Kinda seems too early to say whether they should get max extensions. Third year is often the breakout year. If they tread water this season, I wouldn't max them out, but maybe I would offer them some kind of sub-max extension (like 60% of max or so) and see what they say. If either or both breaks out and makes an all-star game at such a young age, that's definitely max-worthy.
Then why I do I read posters calling other posters dumb, stupid, low iq on a daily basis on here. Going back and forth etc? I’m almost certain that did not exist to the extent that does on here 15 years ago. Then there are posters like Bobby that pretty much something negative to say about every single thing on the Rockets that can be talked about.
