No, they don’t. Teams want productive big leaguers who will help them win enough games to make the playoffs and win championships.

Get her home as soon as possible. Take her to Tookies if they have not made a disney attraction out of it. Feed her some of Blue Bells new DrPepper float ice cream and stop in at the Garvin store to pick up some jerky. While you are in the Hill Country give us a shout and we will take y'all to Luckenbach or the Albert Hall for a Saturday night of belt buckle polishing.

I hope the Astros do get some trade value out of him. My fear though is that a team would insist on a guy like Dubin instead. Not a deal breaker but better value for them.

As for next year, as long as he is the 13th pitcher, and the top 4-6 bullpen arms are not significantly down from this year, then I think he could be valuable.

If Javier, Brown, Garcia, and McCullers are in the rotation then there will be great need for long relievers.

Maybe they do something completely innovative like bring the piggy back system to the majors.

If Neris, Maton, and Stanek leave and Montero never recovers, maybe they are lacking in high leverage bullpen arms next year?

Piggy backing could reduce the innings needed by those guys:

    Framber
    Javier/France
    Brown
    McCullers/Garcia
    Urquidy/ Blanco

Bullpen: Pressly, Abreu, Martinez, Mushinski, Bielak.

If the regular starters can average 6 innings and piggy back tandem average 7, that leaves 12 innings every 5 games by the bullpen.

Just an outside the box thought.

He has no value next year on a contending team. On a rebuilding team he's the man.

Yes. You are right, of course. But I don't see Bielak providing that either.

But the attributes I listed allow players to develop into productive big leaguers who will help them win enough games to make the playoffs and win championships.

Bielak has the 59th best era among pitchers with 50+ ip this season. Other pitchers ranked 50-60 include Verlander, Gilbert, and Bieber.

ERA is a very limited stat determine value.

Almost every pitching stat for Ryne Stanek's 2021 and 2022 were very comparable.

Except his 3.42 ERA in 2021 and 1.15 ERA in 2022.

Bielak is maybe a shade better than replacement level. His ERA this season is supported by pretty much nothing as he's given up hard contact and his K/BB are pretty bad.

Bielak gives me Brad Peacock vibes. Don't think he will ever be a world-beater but a guy I think that keeping around and having patience in him will yield value as an effective spot starter and long man. You need a guy or two like that.

I remember Luhnow once said that after feeling like he gave up on Dan Straily too soon, he didn't want to make that mistake again with Peacock. Brad threw some valuable innings in relief in the 2017 playoffs, especially 3 and 2/3 scoreless in WS Game 3.

Peacock was really great in '17. Gave me Danny Darwin, Ken Forsch as a swing man.

Shame he burned out so quick.

Nah The **** flashed a lot more than Bielak ever has. He had a 3.03 xERA in 2017 over 132 IP including 21 starts. If I recall he developed a big sweeper around that time that really buoyed his value.

I just hope whom ever they trade for is worth it and we don't give up a major asset.

Glad to see Brown focusing on pitching. Even if Brantley doesn’t come back, it never really made sense to spend big to add a bat. If Brantley is out, they still have:

Julks, who has hit at an above average clip and hasn’t really shown to the kind of power we know he has potential for

Gilbert, who if he gets healthy could make a push to be called up and provide a spark

Loperfido, another versatile lefty OF bat who is dominating AA

Singleton, a red hot lefty power bat in AAA

Given the potential cost, I would think one of those options would be better than giving up major prospects for a guy like Bellinger.

Yep. It is something that he had been tinkering with for a couple of years while he was recovering from injuries and in the minors. 2017 was the first year he was healthy and in the majors while being able to control it.

I could never finish this article (https://theathletic.com/2900028/2021/10/20/is-there-a-such-a-thing-as-a-dodgers-slider/), but it is really insulting calling the Peacock slider a Dodger slider nearly 4 years after Peacock started the trend.

All true, but remember before 2017 he spent four seasons bouncing up and down and having big league ERA's in the high 4's and 5's, would have been easy to pull the plug on him back then. Bielak could also figure it out and take his pitching to the next level.

Bielak could figure it out. He hasn't yet and doesn't have a pitch like Peacock had. The Peacock slider isn't new anymore after it becoming en vogue again and the Astros would likely have already taught it to him if they could. Sure, any pitcher that throw 90+ has a potential to adding a new pitch that gives them a year or 2 of being pretty good.

Bellinger is hitting .298. I dont know all of the numbers like you do, but he would certainly be an upgrade. I'm hoping for Verdugo. Rentals for Verdugo shouldn't cost more than Leon and Tamarez.
