Ideally, Ty Floyd in the 2nd, Mike Carico in the 3rd, and then in the 4th (or later) we can pry a top HS kid away from his college commitment.
Apparently approximately pick value is $2.88 mil. No idea on how draft works. Was that amount regardless of who they picked or is it based on the players ranking?
Each pick is assigned a value. The team has the sum of all their picks' value to use towards signing. Sometimes, teams will "reach" in an earlier round to save money to use towards picks in later rounds.
Aiken got us Bregman, who was a key member of two World Series-winning teams, so everything turned out fine in the grand scheme of things. But I get what you mean. All he needs to do is play one MLB game for the Houston Astros and he exceeds what both did as Astros big leaguers.
Personally I would rather have Tanner Witt in the second. Realizing that his comeback from injury has not had great results, I think he will be the better of the 2 when fully recovered
I know that this is not going to be a popular comment, but I really like the Mets taking a chance on Collin Houck at 32
When you don't pick until later than most, you need to take chances. That was us not too long ago (of course, much later than 32). It hasn't (seemed to) worked for us, but I believe taking chances is the right move.
Ok pick as long as it’s a significantly under slot deal that gets them at least 1 additional big bonus signee later in the draft. Matthews is a clear match for the Astros, huge ceiling with huge exit velos, projects to hit a bunch of HR to LF, but swing and miss concerns and lack of defensive certainty that might derail the whole thing. We’ll see how it goes. This draft was weak where Houston was picking.
Team definitely needs quality infield talent! Getting Peña and having him progress seriously saved the Astros and helped them get the 2022 World Series championship. Currently the infield looks set with Bregman, Pena, Altuve, and Abreu/Diaz. But the infield depth quality is sorely lacking in the minor.
Any word on whether we are getting Brice Matthews at significantly below slot? Taking a prospect ranked much later by the scouts could suggest we struck a favorable deal with him... which could free up money later to go over slot on a college commit.
I wouldn’t say no outright. Yes the club is light with infield prospects, but I could see him playing 2nd eventually. Of course that’s my way too early response to the pick.
