Okay, so the US gave him the wrong spelling and it just stuck? I wonder how they heard Hakeem and wrote down Akeem without an H or is Hakeem actually pronounced Ah-keem with a silent H and they wrote it literal Akeem? So all Rockets fans and NBA fans are wrong pronouncing his name when it should be said Akeem but spelt Hakeem?

He's said some people spelled it "Akeem" in Nigeria, too, but it was usually the English teachers or something. He really never thought anything about it until family members asked him why he was spelling it that way, so he finally decided to change it. I've always been confused about the pronunciation since back then I heard both stories : that the "H" was silent, so the pronunciation wouldn't change and that you should pronounce the "H". Not sure on that.

Maybe i'm going senile but didn't Worrell always pronounce it with the silent H, except he mostly just called him Olajuwon?

I always recall him pronouncing the "H" after it became "Hakeem". *shrug*
