Sure it's a big difference if we ignore the fact that Grant is way better player than Brooks.

Really odd to keep hearing "he's overpaid but we need him". All overpays are for players that are needed at a position. Obviously we're not going to overpay someone who we don't need at all, so overpaying someone you need is like any bad overpay. Does Portland not need a PF? That doesn't excuse the Jerami Grant price.

$80m/4yrs was an overpay. We should have gotten him at a lower salary or fewer years. No one was bidding against us. They obviously could not hide from his agent how bad they wanted him, allowing his agent to lift the price. It's like when a real estate agent shows someone an apartment and you say you love it right away and need it in your life. The agent has got you by the balls.

The next best option would have been fine. I'm sure Grant Williams wouldn't turn down $70m from us. This level of desperation for a player for what? So we can win 39 games instead of 36? Hell I'd rather just sign Thybulle and acquire Royce O'Neale like my brother suggested and win 32 games.

Of course it's frustrating that we begrudgingly convinced ourselves we can live with $80m descending and then they throw him an extra $10m. It's literally a little worse.

I really suspect this is Patrick feeling like he should get his way on something. Just seems childish and seems Brooks has a believer with supreme power in our organization.

Dude better improve his shot selection and be a good role model for our core. Leash is very short for him. If he just resumes his career like nothing was wrong, he's going to be our new Ryan Anderson contract.

Make that $86 million, plus another potential $4 million in incentives. Just the salary, not the assets we gave away.

I don’t get why you don’t get Thybulle or grant Williams. This is beyond dumb to pay him for that much

LOL at the assumption it was easy just to sign someone else - maybe those guys didnt want to play here? It takes two to tango. Same thing for FVV the ONLY REASON he is here is because Houston was probably the only team willing to max him out yet that deal is "good" ??? This place is weird sometimes.

So we agree that he's relatively a good defender and objectively a horrible offensive player.

Grant Williams is not the defender Brooks is. Williams is a good defender, and probably a little bit better at defending near the rim or matching up on bigs. Brooks is significantly better at guarding on the perimeter.

Again, I agree with all the common criticisms of the deal on the board, but the reality is that Dillon Brooks is one of the best five perimeter defenders in the league. Ime obviously values that.

Unbelievable that this deal got even worse and there's not even a TO or anything. Feel like they kept the contract details hidden for a long time, almost like they knew it was a terrible deal and they were going to get dragged in the media/fanbase for it. Wtf was Stone thinking?

If he was simply Battier level offense then I’d accept this deal more but he’s a big negative on offense. Ime will have to magically restructure Brooks on offense to make this contract be remotely reasonable relative to how much cap space it’s taking up going forward.

Brooks wants to be a mentor…..that’s why we are panic that much?

    • In an interview with Kelly Iko of The Athletic, Brooks said he’s looking forward to bringing his influence to a young team that needs to learn how to win. “I can’t wait to work with Tari (Eason),” Brooks said. “I feel like he can be a great player in this NBA — especially a great defender — and grow his game, his athleticism and everything.”

"Relatively good defender" is an interesting description for someone who made All Defense 2nd Team.

Guess Luka is a "relatively good offensive player".

I'll not bother trying to explain you the difference between individual offensive stats and individual defensive stats in terms of objectivity.

Bringing up all team selections doesn't really help your case either since those selections are mostly based on team's success and the player's image.

I hope this is true. I don't really watch Grizz games but in the playoffs Brooks didn't really do anything on both sides of the ball. Got lit up by Bron on defense and couldn't shoot anything on offense.

I'm a big fan of Stone and his FO but from the outset this Def feels like a head scratcher of a move, esp since it doesn't seem like any FO wanted Brooks at such a high price.

You still don't get it. It's not about how much of Tilman's money Stone gave him. It's not even about what kind of player Brooks is and possibly be. It's about giving up unnecessary assets and flexibility, which could have helped the team in other ways.

Now that he is a Rocket and locked up in a 4-year contract, most of us reasonable Rockets fans will want him to do well. We want him to play up to his contract. We don't want to have to give up even more assets just to get him off our hands.

Yeah Brooks' agent pulled one over on the Rockets. They were essentially the only bidders besides China and still managed to overpay. At least it's not as bad as Chandler Parsons' contract, hopefully.
