So we made space to overpay a guy whom his own team didn't like.

Even if Brooks manages to be worth 20M/year, wtf happened at the negotiating table??

When you stink for 3 years straight, you HAVE to overpay.

It sux. But nobody was queuing up to come play at the circus we had established.

Even still, this weird trade to make room for Lopez (who didn't come), is a head scratcher

This is the most favorable structure for Brooks' contract that the Rockets can offer under the CBA. Incentives can only make up 15% of yearly compensation, and salary cannot decrease by more than 5% of the first year salary year-over-year (non-compounding). If the incentive package is based on goals that are extremely difficult to hit, then the deal doesn't look quite as bad by Y3 and Y4, somewhere right around what the non-taxpayer MLE will be assuming annual 10% growth of the salary cap in the next two years (which is likely for several years, due to the implementation of cap smoothing in the new CBA).

If these incentives are tied to extremely high levels of performance (e.g. $1M for making all-NBA first team defensive, $500k for all-NBA second team defensive, $1M for making the conference finals while playing >2,000 minutes, $1M for having a 3pt% greater than 35% on >400 attempts), then maybe this contract goes from a poop sandwich to just dirty bathwater; basically, if any of those things which are all extremely unlikely were to happen, we'd all be pretty thrilled to give him the extra money. The Rockets gave Clint Capela a yearly incentive of $500k if he managed to hit 65% from the free-throw line; that seems laughably optimistic now 9 seasons into his career. If it's very easy, like KPJ's "play 60 games to get an extra $2.4M", where it's not tied at all to performance and just health, then I can go back to hating on the deal.

    Year ....Total Comp.......Base...........Incentives
    2024 $ 21,621,621 $ 18,378,378 $ 3,243,243
    2025 $ 20,540,540 $ 17,459,459 $ 3,081,081
    2026 $ 19,459,459 $ 16,540,540 $ 2,918,919
    2027 $ 18,378,378 $ 15,621,621 $ 2,756,757
    Total $ 79,999,998 $ 67,999,998 $ 12,000,000

Good work, though I swear some of the Rockets people (Jackson, Roosh, Clutch?) acted like the incentives had little impact on the contract overall.

So I'd just assume there are no incentives and run with that.

I will say based on this, the AAV isn't terrible *in a vacuum*, though in reality, still a hefty overpay IMO. And the years is much worse than the AAV.

Ryan Anderson was a 6'10" bucket, a good player who got scapegoated and I'll die on that hill.
Revisionist? He got the business about his contract when he did exactly what he was brought in to do. People b****ed about him not being able to defend Curry like anyone really can.

fkng WISH a 40% 3 point shooter was on this team. What a joke.

Yup, and doing all of that for a terrible player that NO ONE wanted.....that's what Udoka made happen.

If not for Udoka being Dillon Brooks' ONLY fan, he'd be looking at China or a vet minimum type deal.

Any non laughing stock type team just wasn't willing to give a 49 TS% chucker who demands to be featured in the offense any kind of deal.

Looks like the kpj fans have already turned on Udoka, that did not take long.

Anyone that is a fan of the Rockets should be pretty pissed off by what he did to them forcing the move for Brooks....but I get that some people are slower about realizing what has happened so it's fine. You'll figure it out eventually.

It's just like when Harden forced the Westbrook trade, I knew then that he had just destroyed the team, but some of you guys cheered it on.

Udoka is not the general manager, he may tell the gm what kind of players he wants - Lopez - but it is up to the Gm to go and execute it. If Rocket fans want to be mad at someone they should be mad at Lopez using and abusing the Rockets like Bosh did, or at Stone for being wet behind the ears and letting it happen. It is perplexing that anyone would blame Udoka, Lopez afterall IS a great player to go after so he isn’t wrong, unless they have some ulterior motive like being mad at the coach for benching their favorite player?

I think the Rockets gave up more for Dillon Brooks - who was a free agent - than Phoenix did for Bradley Beal

Raffy Stone wanted Dillon Brooks before Udoka had even interviewed. He just likes him - it was a joke during the period before free agency, because everyone know that Stone really wanted him - and he got him by bidding against himself and paying him 4/80, moving out multiple future draft picks and trading away recent #1 draft picks.

It is concerning that Stone can get fixated on a player and totally lose objectivity.
