Google acknowledged their search sucked after a bunch of reddit mods took their ball and went home.

This is almost too funny to be true, but then again, everything about the Elon-Twitter disaster so far has been "imagine dumbest possible outcome" and it has basically been true.

Like, Musk gets mad at Twitter because of various alt-right brainworm nonsense in late 21/early 22, threatens to buy it, ends up getting stoned and buying it, tries to make up reasons not to buy it, is forced to buy it anyway, assumes very active personal ownership and starts completely wrecking it with a full onslaught of erratic, ego-driven recklessness and egregiously bad decisions.

Meanwhile before every dumb thing that happens, Musk acolytes claim its all part of some Qanon type master plan. And then things get even dumber.

You can only polish a turd like Twitter so much.
    Collectively it's a cesspool ..

Btw, how come we don't hear about % of bots anymore? wasn't that a big argument about him not wanting to buy it?

Twitter has gone dark with statistical data, but I’m pretty sure bots are now more effective with the pay-to-verify (blue mark) system. So instead of defeating bots or ‘dying trying!’ as he proclaimed, Musk has made them more effective.

The bot issue is going to be trickier once ChatGPT4 allows users to hoover up sites for more info. This could break ugh...change the internet into bot chatbot driven content and interaction.

Not that normal users would want any of this. That's a reason why Google search sucks enough for people to complain when reddit went half dark...too much bot and SEO ad driven BS for people to find meaningful results quickly.

Some guesses have been that Twitter and Reddit are pre-empting this with this rate limiting/tolls because the first wave of data trawlers hoovering up twitter for their homegrown chatbots will pale in comparison to millions of users doing it on a smaller scale.

When I said it’s the end of the internet as we knew it, I didn’t realize I meant we were going back to Web 1.

Let me see what Jeeves thinks about this.

It has been in the works for a while, and Zuckerberg wasn’t secretive about it.

    https://www.reuters.com/technology/meta-launch-twitter-like-app-threads-2023-07-04/

Threads is expected to be released on Thursday and will allow users to retain followers from photo-sharing platform Instagram, and keep the same username, a listing on Apple's (AAPL.O)App Store showed.

"Threads is going to pose a huge threat to Twitter because it's coming from the Meta and Instagram family of apps," said Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall.

"Instagram has 2 billion users compared to around 250 million of Twitter, so it's about ten times bigger already. If only one-in-ten Instagram users tries using Threads, it will overtake Twitter in the blink of an eye."
