3rd year being a team option makes this a really good signing. Almost makes up for the other crazy ass moves Stone has been making smh.
I get folks being wary for paying the beard loads of cash, but imagine paying fvv 40+ and still missing playoffs, that's gonna sting.
This is an A grade signing by the Rockets. Amen Thompson is not ready. FVV: 1. Pretty efficient scorer. Yeah his nos were bad last season but that's due to Raptors not having any scoring threats. He is a 39% three point shooter on high volume that tells you all you need to know. Also a 2 way player, decent on both sides of the ball. 2. Brings playmaking and vet presence Rox desp need. He can provide structure the team lacks. 3. Contract is for 3 yrs with the 3rd team option/unguaranteed. Amazing contract and gives the Rockets all the flexibility they need.
Basically a huge overpay for two years to mentor our young pg while the team won’t be good anyways.
When do we have to choose the option on the 3rd year? Is it before the new year starts? Can that contract be traded as a large expiring right before year 3 beigns?
Love it Hope he can do this for Alpi, Bari, Jalen - and that they listen. Somehow I think Amen will definitely listen. Seems like a kid that is eager to learn.
imo... that 3rd year not be guaranteed makes this contract totally reasonable! Amen's got 2 years to become a starter... at that point we can either cut loose of FVV - or we got him another year as we search for other 'pg of the future' options...
Oh man that 3rd year not being guaranteed makes a WORLD of difference to the entire offseason. FVV will earn the majority of his contract for these 2 years while the kids grow up and if Amen is developing as expected we can decline year 3 and hand the starting spot to him. That was the biggest risk sitting on our plate imo. A non-performing or injured FVV in year 2 would have made the following a year a disaster with rookie extensions kicking in. It really makes the Brooks contract a little less risk too. I was worried we may be holding onto two bad contracts while the extensions come in. We retain plenty of flexibility and can dump Brooks in 2 years if need be while declining the team option on FVV, resetting our team either around successful young guys or go into free agency with significant money. We can also exercise the option if there's a great trade out there which requires a big expiring contract with a productive player. Just great news.
This 1000 times this.... I have been saying people judging KPJ under Silas are not thinking deeply enough, he was told here is the ball go beat 5 guys on your own kid.....and he was pretty amazing at it. Under a structured system he is a much higher ceiling than FVV ......I really wanted to see KPJ under IMe and maybe we still will..... People here always look for a scapegoat, last year it was a highly efficient Christian Wood - though not a leader, if used right can be a nice scorer off the bench - this year they blamed KPJ when both years it was 100% Silas. DD
I completely agree that we shouldn't judge any of our young players (including KPJ) until we see them play for a real coach. But the bolded is just a ludicrous statement lmao. You'd think you're referring to prime James Harden in that 2019 season. The team was horrendous and while KPJ made some good improvements in this 4th season, he is still not close to all-star level player according to most advanced metrics. Christian Wood is a fine player but he obviously has issues that have followed him around the league. I don't think he was a scapegoat at all, for me personally I just viewed him as a selfish player that wasn't the right fit for a team trying to develop young players.
You really up on that hill for KPJ. PG is the wrong role for him. Why is it not possible for him to be in a sixth man role here?? Nothing wrong with being one of the greatest sixth men of all time. Hope Ime sells him on that because I do believe KPJ has talent, he just shouldn't be counted as a floor general real coach or no real coach.
I like KPJ, and I don't blame the Rockets struggles on him whatsoever. I actually thought he had a pretty good season last year and that he's got a bright future in the league if he can clean some things up. I just don't think that future is as a point guard. I'd love to see him lean into his strengths as a secondary creator and spot shooter, and he's got some traits that could make him a solid defender as well. Under Ime, hopefully he'll still get minutes in this rotation and get a chance to maximize those strengths.
