I thought twitter died a dozen times already. Is this the final straw?

I know developers who could circumvent this with Selenium in a few hours. Nothing to see here.

'Twitter is dead' is pretty much a straw man. I'm sure there are a few who might think that way, but most people do not.

Anyhow, I think this is probably the first incident that has greatly impacted ALL high-traffic Twitter users. If it is temporary, other than laughter and jokes, it probably won't cause any major long-lasting harm. However, it once again highlights that Twitter doesn't adequately test its changes before releasing them to the masses and lacks the (pretty basic) technical resources to quickly debug and resolve issues. If the report of self-DDOS is correct, it also showcases Musk as someone who quickly jumps to an incorrect analysis of the problem and, with that, likely a poor solution. All of this reinforces the image of Twitter being on the edge, both financially and in execution, providing opportunities for competitors, which causes real heartburn for Musk based on his public lashing against potential competitors.

I guess it depends on your definition of "death". MySpace is still around, for example.

Twitter revenues are down dramatically vs a year ago; it's brand value is down; it's usage is down (and apparently now by design); hate speech is up; censorship is up; time spent on twitter is being forced down.

If you don't see the trends, it's that you don't want to.

It's funny that you worship one billionaire who keeps screwing up everything he touches recently but make fun of the other. Especially when the latter actually generates more revenues and profits than Tesla and Twitter combined.

Metaverse had no real target audience - it's no different than 3D movies and other things that are solutions to problems that didn't exist. Twitter, on the other hand, is the easiest thing to rip off - it's super-easy to program (see Truth Social, Mastodon, Gab, Parlor and other copycats out there) and has a very large demand. Musk sees its a software company, which is why he's messed it up so badly, but its simply a network-effect company. There can be 30 identical twitters - the one that succeeds is simply the one that the most people choose to use. THAT is the value of Twitter - it's hard to get anyone to switch to anything else because of it's brand and sheer current size. But if you blow up your own network and tell people they can't use it, then if FB can produce a real alternative and also already has a way larger network to build from, they are set up as a legit alternative. So then it's just a matter of the spark (a crisis, a big event, etc) where Twitter fails people by blocking their ability to see tweets and Meta-twitter gets them the info they need.

Instagram has more than twice the users of Twitter in the US, and 4x as many globally. If they launch properly, the opportunity is there to grab legit market share each time Musk does something dumb. But again, at some point soon, it's likely Twitter realizes they made yet another stupid decision and reverses itself.

You are correct. The defined metric matters.
You read on the internet that censorship and hate speech is up and its owners says real time screen usage is at an all time high. My antidotal evidence suggests not much has changed. Bot usage is of course still a problem but has improved greatly, from a viewer experience.

Let me tell ya. That Tesla and SpaceX company is completely screwed up. Competition is steam rolling them globally. I still don't understand why *you* make sweeping generalizing comments that are completely out of sync.

We can crow on about the purpose of Musk buying twitter and his blunders, but the reality is this; He bought Twitter for its users and network effect.

Yeah doesn't matter whether twitter is still alive. Mainly whether if it's profitable and when it would be.

Im sure Twitter will always find a buyer, but just like myspace still being alive, it sure didn't find a great buyer.

You're taking the word of a person that has openly lied to you numerous times. But fortunately, for non-Musk-worshippers, there's actual real data available from analytics firms that track web and app traffic through independent and unbiased means (ie: not just relying on the word of a known liar). Here's just one example - you can do more research if you'd like, although you may not want to shatter your misguided worldview or your "anecdotal experience" of how many millions of people do or don't use twitter.

    https://www.similarweb.com/blog/insights/social-media-news/twitter-shrinking/

    Key takeaways
    • Worldwide visits to twitter.com dropped 7.3% year-over-year in March, the third straight month of declines, according to Similarweb estimates.
    • Twitter’s unique visitor count on the web dropped 3.3% year-over-year in March.
    • For the Twitter Android app, average daily active users were down 9.8% in March and monthly active users were down 8%, both year-over-year. Within the US, monthly active users were down 15% on iOS and 14% on Android.
    • Time on site was down slightly to 10.6 minutes, from 10.7 in March 2022.
    • Pages per visit were down -1.5% year-over-year (would not necessarily reflect time spent scrolling through the main feed without visiting the distinct URL for a tweet or user profile).
    • Confirmed quitter account deactivations on the website, which peaked at 1.75 million around the time Musk assumed control of the company in November 2022, have subsided to 1.1 million in March – actually 11% lower than they were a year ago.

Twitter is not dying. It's replacing its userbase.

"For all of the news junkies, culture makers, and politicos he alienates, Musk might be gaining more diehard users, including Tesla enthusiasts, coders, crypto traders, and gamers.
So, is Twitter dying? The answer is, the old Twitter is already dead. We’re all living in Musk’s more chaotic, drama-filled, polarizing Twittersphere now."
    https://www.vox.com/technology/2023/4/15/23683554/twitter-dying-elon-musk-x-company

He is replacing them with his worshippers instead.
Musk would rather have Space Ghost and Tinman who will blindly follow him..

I’m literally only on Twitter for Woj/shams bombs and if we are lucky a Bima cap breakdown. Otherwise the tool has become irrelevant fast. Like how many times do I have to block Allie Spagnoloa “for you” videos that for some reason Twitter spams me with??

For political and world news I actually think Clutchfans aggregates news breaks better. Sure it’s a couple clicks but it’s a nice user friendly setup to just do a quick check in on what’s new actually, and I can dig into the links from posters if it’s interesting enough.

Reddit has been a dumpster fire in June but no peep about it since the ego manic co-ceo isn't big time like Elon.

    Sounds about right...
