@larsv8 we also need to wait and see exactly how the contracts shake out before mentioning flexibility

FVV on a 2 or 3 year deal isn't a killer if Lopez and Brooks are on 1 year deals

FVV is a better defender, hustler, and smarter player. He's small but a plus defender at PG. He is a PG who doesn't turn the ball over and doesn't make bonehead plays. His win share/48 and VORP are 2x that of KPJ and his box +/- is significantly better. Their true shooting percentages might as well be equal.

Plus FVV eliminates Nix, TyTy, and JGup (I like TyTy and JGup but they are fringe players). This also allows Amen to develop slowly rather than tossing him into the deep end and seeing what happens.

The money is going to get spent either way so at least spent it on someone who helps build up the team.

We need a LEADER OF MEN on our team. Our offense look like a AUU team, my turn/your turn stuff. FVV would be a serious defender, he was 2nd in the NBA with 1.8 steals(tied with Jimmy Butler). We need a leader who knows how to win. Because of the new CBA, we is max out at 40 million a years because of his age….he is under 30 years old. Raptor’s reporters are saying we wants a short, but big pay day. Toronto is also trying to keep Jakob Poeltl as well. FVV is looking for a higher pay day in two years. This is perfect for us and Amen needs help to run a offense in the NBA .

He may want that money but that doesn't mean he's going to get it. That's the beauty of restricted free agency.
The market sets the value and the Rockets match or they don't.

I really can't see any team offering him much more than that Tate type deal because of his limitations.

As a stop gap guy to teach others how to be a pro - fine, but he is not a good player nor is he worth 30m a year...he is the definition of average.

I'd give the 30m a year to Middleton, so Lopez could join in

Brook Lopez should be at the top of the list in free agency. I can't think of a better combination of a veteran locker room presence and an actual need for this team on the court. I'm fine with a 2 year overpay.

I really don't see Middleton as leaving Milwaukee.
Always injured or not, the Bucks must and will do everything they can to keep Giannis happy.

There is no real difference flexibility wise, for FVV, on a 2 year deal vs 4. Frankly I would prefer the 4, in that scenario.

If they are blowing their window, they should go after Cam Johnson, 4 year 35m, declines down to 25m by expiring year.

The Rockets can still have a lot of cap space next offseason if they sign FVV to a big contract.

Lots of people keep mentioning this idea of short term deals to maintain flexibility but this needs to be clarified.

The Rockets have this offseason and next to make use of their cap space and advantage of rookie contracts & bird rights.
We have a two offseason window - 2023/24 and 2024/25. After that the extensions are due for Green, Sengun, Garuba & Christopher - their cap holds will eat into that cap space in the summer of 2025.

    Cap holds -
    Green $16,290,378
    Sengun $7,621,639
    Garuba $6,391,110
    Christopher $6,354,752

With the cap holds that turns that $60m in cap space into $23.5m, even if there are cap increases you have lost $36.5m to cap holds.

Kicking the proverbial can down the road is only an option for ONE year. It's this offseason or next.

This is true, but not if they sign all three to multi year deals.

Is FVV a good defender that can also guard SGs? If not, I don't see how he fits next to Jalen.

That's not true, there could be a significant difference in 2025 and 2026.

You're assuming all of our young guys get huge extensions, and that we won't be utilizing their cap holds. It's possible their new contracts aren't large, it's possible they are traded, and it's possible to use their cap hold as RFA's while utilizing cap space. Maybe in a very specific scenario, it doesn't matter, but it definitely does in other potential outcomes.

This is why it won't be FVV on a two year.

The play is signing him to a 4-5 year deal.

    Yes, I am assuming that.

Even if they trade them, they are trading them for other contracts of similar magnitude.

Its highly unlikely we can be players in any free agency class outside next year.

Maybe not depending on the numbers. They won't be really paying anybody much besides the FAs they sign and KPJ which I think they can still get out of. I think they could still offer big money to someone next offseason even if they spend big this summer.
