No no, he did say that there is a video out there that shows him missing all these easy reads. Of course, that video doesn't exist, because it's not true at all. He is a very willing passer. The one who misses all the easy reads is KPJ.
Sengun will be a franchise player. KPJ will never be a franchise player in the NBA. Green will probably/hopefully become a 25-30 point per game scoring specialist in the NBA, hopefully for the Rockets. I don't think Green has the all-around game Sengun has. But that's perfectly fine. Again, like Rafael Barlowe said: There is nothing wrong with Green being to Sengun what Murray is to Jokic. There shouldn't be any jealousy. Hopefully they gel together even more.
Sengun doesn't have an all around game. 85% of his buckets come within 8ft of the rim. That severely debilitates offensive spacing if that is your best "all around player" because teams are just going to pack the paint and that means Sengun can only be utilized as some sort of Luka like heliocentric offense because he's be useless as a floor spacer off ball.
People are way overrating Sengun due to all the Jokic comps. If you want to argue he's the best player on the Rockets roster, I'd go with that. If you want to say he is the most likely current Rocket to make an all-star game, I can still go with that. But "franchise player" is a term reserved for perennial all-stars at least. Yao, T-Mac, Harden, etc. if we're going with the past 20 years or so. But right now I'd settle for Sengun even reaching Houston Dwight Howard level of play first. Which is 2nd best player on a conference finals team. Before wondering if he's a franchise player.
He should play 30+ mpg when he can earn them. If he can’t beat out 35 year old Lopez then stop pumping him as the savior. If he’s that good then any competent coach will play him over a player who isn’t as impactful. And we assume we have competent coaching now. It’s beyond laughable and weak that y’all don’t want someone else to come in for him to compete. Iron sharpens iron. I hope we assemble as much talent as possible and let the best man earn his minutes.
You WANT (desperately so, it seems) Sengun to be a franchise player. Just like Green, he has done nothing to cement that fact. Green at least has the potential to become a supernova scorer, which way more teams will value more.
Who said we don't want someone in for him to compete with? If anyone has EARNED his minutes so far, it's Sengun. Jabari played ******* awful for the first half of last season, and still consistently got a lot of minutes. Green hasn't played a lick of defense in his two years here, and still plays a ton of minutes. So spare yourself the "he should earn his minutes" stuff when it is selectively applied to one player only.
I think you are trying to find a reasonable explanation to what happened and want to believe that the move was rational, but it simply was not. 1) We were not heavily invested in Green's playmaking at any point. We were not heavily or even lightly invested to make Green's or any player's life better other than KPJ. 2) Just as it was the case for Green, there was no plan to develop Sengun's playmaking as a sub or starter, when kpj was off or on. It happened organically in January until Silas couldn't take it anymore 3) Playing with sengun would actually improve KPJ and Green much better than playing with bruno. The idea of giving bruno starting position just to please KPJ, because his passing skillset is very limited(not good on lob passes either) to sacrifice developing sengun along with green was ridiculuous. The starting of Bruno was so ridiculous that the comments might have pointed to the fact that Bruno is much the lesser player. But the stupidity of that move was not that. We can try to mould the decision into a technical one that would benefit the team but it really doesn't add up, just like any other thing Silas did or other discussions around Sengun, like 3pt shooting, being taken out because of foul trouble etc.. It was one dimensional, serving one thing, that had already expired long time ago.
And Sengun has the "potential" to become a player similar to Jokic. When you listen to Jokic himself, to Durant, to Paul George, to the Wizards coach, to Anthony Edwards, to knowledgable NBA scouts like Rafael Barlowe - there is ONE player they rave about, and that's Sengun. Doesn't take anything away from Green - I think/hope he can become that supernova scorer - let's hope they both fulfill their potential on the Rockets. As to the "franchise player" tag - when given the opportunity to actually run the offense through him, he put up Jokic-like numbers, but he was only given that opportunity for a very brief stretch. My argument is that the Rockets would be at their best if they were to commit to him like the Nuggets did with Jokic when they traded away Nurkic. Anyone can disagree, of course.
Is this merely a lack of intellectual curiosity in finding people saying good things about Green and you being tunnel visioned into only seeking out good things said about Sengun? I mean what about guys like Luka and PG who said they should build around Green? It seems like this is simply a case of you just seeking out validation of Sengun.
Lol, Sengun is the only player in the team who had to earn every single minute, and got them later than he earned them. Nobody is worried about the competition. The laughable thing is the automatic suggestion that he has to earn his minutes, which has been going on from day one and just applies to Sengun.
I’m not selectively applying anything. We have competent coaching now. Bring in the best talent possible and the best players will play. If any player can’t beat out whatever free agent they can obtain (especially with this weak FA class) then they ain’t franchise player worthy.
Sengun does have that potential and Green has the potential to become Jordan. Neither are even in the same universe as both players currently, hence neither player is lesser to the other. I don't give a damn what others say about Sengun, especially if they are a players. If players were inherently great at evaluating a player's future, Jordan would have been a great drafter. Nash would have been a great coach. Barlowe would have been a great GM. When Sengun actually develops a reliable jump shot, I would support building the team around him.
This is a new coaching staff. Everyone has to earn their time with these competent coaches. Y’all need to get over your Silas PTSD. If your mans is as good as y’all think then he will play no matter who they bring in. So stop all the take of X player don’t need to come, blah blah blah.
I think you are underestimating Green's potential and missing the fact that Green did not have the body, experience and the coaching to develop his all around game. He might be at a totally different level at the end of the season with Ime. Also green's position requires less of an all-around game. So even a smaller improvement compared to Sengun could have a similar impact on the court. For me building around Sengun vs building around Sengun/Green(and Bari/Tari as well) are not contradicting things. The more these players can play off of each other as a unit, the more each will elevate their game.
Totally agree. And I'm very excited to see Tari's improvement, and what Amen and Whitmore have to offer. I also hope we keep Garuba and see what we have with TyTy. Personally, would also like to keep KMJ around, but I doubt that will happen.
All he said was "there's film". Game film is film. As in watching the games. I don't doubt that he watches Sengun and thinks he's constantly making mistakes or doing the wrong thing, it's totally subjective, and he doesn't like Sengun. It's the same way I feel about Daishen Nix. But I'm not about to go edit a video with a bunch of clips of Daishen Nix missing easy reads and easy passes. I know what I'm watching. And I'm sure @maj21 knows what he's watching when he sees Sengun do the same. I just didn't like the implication that we all know it and see it too, because that aint true.
I am not worried about Sengun not being good enough to earn his minutes. What I would be concerned about is if Fertitta and Stone still don't see how good Sengun is, just like some of the fans here. But I trust that Ime will see it, quickly.
Obviously, Sengun has to prove himself one more time to have his spot in starting 5 next to his perennial all-star HOF teammates who have proven themselves countless times.
