"[His] ceiling is through the roof." -- Josh Smith (who, if you didn't know, once played on the same AAU team as Dwight Howard)
The Magette comp seems pretty good. I also like the Caron Butler comp as well. Both elite athletes but not quite able to put it all together. Still solid players though.
I don't see the Maggette comp. Maggette had a god-like body but still played a finesse game. He wasn't someone who bullied people with his strength and athleticism. I don't think that describes Cam Whitmore.
I'll take credit for the Maggette comp, he was tunnel vision attack mode. Finesse in what sense? Caron was a good playmaker. Cam never looks to pass Read this old scouting report on Maggette, it's almost directly transferable to Cams scouting report http://www.ibiblio.org/craig/draft/1999_draft/Players/maggette.html Even some mention at #3 and one saying potentially #1 pick...he ended up dropping to #13
I definitely did. We can agree to disagree, but I definitely did. He wanted to be a finesse high point scorer, and not the tough player people hoped for. He had the body to bully people like a Ron Artest, but that wasn't his game. Edit Ok, I went and looked at some stats to see if they backed up what I remembered, and to be honest they didn't really. His FTA per 100 possessions was higher than I would have thought. I do remember it being a talking point during his playing time that he wasn't as physical as he could have been, and I remember thinking that as well. But maybe I was just flat out wrong back then.
We're very sad for you. We will trade Cam Whitmore to you for Mikal Bridges. That should make things better.
I don't think we can say for certain how much finesse Cam will or won't have with his scoring. He did show flashes of being able to make difficult layups and find good angles in the paint. He has a bit of a stepback game already. Not much in the midrange yet, but that could come. His ballhandling, defense, and scoring skills I feel like have a good chance of improving a lot, I'm just concerned about the playmaking and court vision since that tends to be much harder to teach if a guy doesn't have those innate abilities.
I think some are underrating his defense and outside shooting. His shooting was affected by having thumb surgery.. Hopefully he can become a better passer. He's 19 next month, so his game should improve in this area as he ages.
He showed flashes and even looked bearded that way his rookie year but Silas and his weird minutes allocations happened.
I'm pretty sure that if the Rockets had the 19th pick, they choose Podz over Whitmore. That's why they were trying so hard to trade up before Whitmore slid. Also, Shams tweeted "Rockets seriously considering stopping Whitmore's slide at 20.
