When Meyers got added to the roster last year, Dusty said he wasn't ready and needed to be in AAA. He essentially implied that Meyers was being forced to play him by the front office, which fits with the fact that Click staked his entire job on Meyers' success and was a big part of his firing.
Maldy walked in that "automatic out" at-bat. Besides that, who do you pinch hit for him? The Astros have no depth - their options were Meyers, who's 0 for his last 22. Kessinger and Madris, who are both nobodies. Or Abreu, who would have been a legit option but is also back to being in an incredible slump and worse than Maldy recently.
Astros really need to Promote some Players to the Majors. Too many AAA Pitchers, Position Players on the Team
There’s nobody down there in AAA my man. Nobody that’s appreciably better than what we have going on right now.
"We have too many minor league players on this team so my solution is to promote some minor league players."
Korey Lee has been on fire and can play multiple positions. The Sugar Land offense is great... the pitching has been atrociously bad.
The answer is stop playing Maldy. You have a stud young C on the roster this exact second, superior both offensively and defensively in practically all meaningful metrics. Sure maybe in that exact spot PH him doesn’t provide a meaningful difference but simply not having him bat in 90% of our games is a win, almost regardless of who replaces him in the order. Meyers - as big a slump as he’s in - still provides more offensive upside and frankly more defensive value. And yes, we all know Dusty isn’t going to do that but that’s the biggest part of the problem. In fact, it seems wholly unlikely that even if Dana made a trade for a meaningful bat that would allow Dusty to sit Maldy the majority of games, there’s little in Dusty’s decision making that leads anyone to believe he would make the correct moves. This is the worst this team has looked since 2016 and is now sitting 6.5 games behind the rangers and in a dog fight for a wild card spot. And we’re doing this missing 4/6 of last years starting rotation and w a much more vulnerable pen. We all understand that status quo is status quo for a reason. But it’s seems increasingly unlikely that Dusty’s status quo is going to lead us back into division contention. Play your best players the majority of the time. It isn’t that hard.
You also need your truly best players to play their best more often than not. That is not being said for Altuve, Bregman, Tucker this year. They were able to survive Yuli last year, but not Abreu this year. And Pena was very hot during the playoffs… but it’s starting to look like this is who he is (a streaky #6-7 hitter who can play great defense), vs. an expected perennial all-star/MVP superstar. Diaz/Chas/Meyers/Dubon aren’t carrying this team for a short stretch or an extended stretch this year.
It's his second year... there is also a non-cynical reason why it takes 3-4 years before a player is even arb eligible.
This, but wasn't Jake the guy that was thrown at Dusty to play by the previous GM? Funny how the turntables. Inexcusable to not play your best guys.
He’s almost putting up identical numbers as he did last year. Look at Lance Berkman’s or George Springer’s year by year stats. Sometimes, especially when you start your career at 24, you are who you are… which can still be pretty ****ing good, regardless of your arbitration status.
Baker will probably bench Chas for 2 weeks ju5a to spite Rome. He don't give AF after the world series.
Total BS that he has elevated Julks above Chas. You just can’t defend Dusty at this point. He’s killing us.
