What a perfect storm for us this turned out to be. For starters...Charlotte vomiting all over themselves and selecting Brandon Miller. Giving us the most athletic playmaker in recent draft history who can guard 1-3. And then this. Cam slides to a point where the win-now teams weren't comfortable drafting him because they likely didn't interview him and were in "win now" mode. So they just went with the guys they scouted and interviewed. I think this shows that teams only have X amount of resources to give to prospects and don't bother with anyone mocked well outside of their range. This draft was also incredibly deep so there was still insane value at 10-20 where teams didn't feel it to be worth it to trade out of it without getting something massive in return.

Draftniks will always go with offensive engines as top of the draft worthy players in my experience. You want that "star" potential up there and in a vacuum Cam Whitmore could possibly be a guy that you can give the ball to and he can go make things happen. He is an explosive above the rim player with a serviceable shot. He wont be a guy you expect to make plays for others or lock down on defense. He slid because of reports the kid drug ass during workouts and seemed uninterested in the process more than anything health related in my opinion at least. 6'6 wings are just stuck in limbo in todays game if they dont offer the shooting to keep bigs off of them inside the arc. I would study Whitmores high school film and was intrigued. He didnt expand his game at all in his college year. He was sort of a black hole. I wish he were just a little bit bigger, but with any luck he will apply himself fully and realize all the potential he carries with him.

edit: I would have drafted GG Jackson or Leonard Miller over Cam Whitmore, but am satisfied with the pick. You dont lose anything taking a flyer at 20. It wont make or break this roster, but a 6'9-6'10 guy with all the same attributes of Cam Whitmore was very enticing for me.

This is a good point from R94. He has some glaring weaknesses (like Amen), but at 20 there is significantly less pressure on him to perform and we can use he and Tari in a beautifully athletic wing rotation.

Future is bright for us right now.

Just because a lot of teams passed up on Whitmore does not make Stone a genius, just like teams passed up on Kawhi didn't make the Spurs genius.

Now let's hope Whitmore will turn out great and his health issue isn't really much.

I think I can really pass. Definitely, I made some dumb decisions sometimes. Everybody’s human at the end of the day. But my playmaking ability can definitely improve, and it’s very underrated. But other than that, I can shoot. I know I’m a shooter. Every time I shoot the ball, I think it can go in, but that’s something I’m trying to prove — that I can shoot consistently.

That's a good answer and he's self aware that he sucks as a passer and has tunnel vision

True, we actually have no idea what we were willing to trade up to get him lol.

Imagine trading a lot to get him at 10? People would have felt a lot differently about the pick if say we traded KJM in a package to get him, people would have been wondering if we could have gotten more for KJM and would have forever tied his career to him for Rockets fans for example.

Still, sometimes its better to be lucky.
